1. Install Individual Power Usage Meters at The Aventine
Tell the Aventine to install individual power usage meters in each unit!
The Aventine currently measures the power usage (which determine tenants’ utilities bills) for the entire complex, and splits the cost equally among the units. This means no matter how much you try to reduce your power usage (air conditioning, gas, hot water, etc.), you will still pay for OTHER PEOPLE’S UTILITIES.
Sign this petition to get The Aventine to install individual meters in each unit, so we will only have to pay for the power we use ourselves.
Your neighbors may keep the lights on all night and blast the AC, but that doesn’t mean you should have to pay for them!
Needham Trees is a community group organized to protest the clear cutting of trees along the NSTAR transmission line.
We do not oppose NSTAR’s right to maintain the transmission line. We rely on NSTAR to ensure a steady power supply for all of our homes and businesses.
We do oppose the abrupt change in their management practices being employed by NSTAR.
For 48 years this transmission line have been managed through a system of trimming and tree removal only when it was necessary and only after communication with the abutter on the affected properties.
At no point has there been a power outage resulting from a tree hitting a transmission line. We have asked for information on the number of instances from NSTAR and to date they have not provided one.
Lacking any information that this is actually related to service we conclude that this change has more to do with the economics of maintaining their transmission and distribution lines at the lowest possible cost regardless of the impact on the neighbors.
3. Improve Use of Water and Energy at USF
Imagine you are a farmer in charge of watering all the crops in your land. Imagine that about two hours before you had to perform your task, it would begin to rain heavily for the remainder of the afternoon. Now, despite the fact that the soil is already wet by the constant and heavy rain, would you still water the plants even more?
The logical answer is no. Similarly, imagine if you work schedule is from 7 A.M. to 8 P.M, then when it’s time to go home, would you leave the lights and a/c on for at least 7 hours? Again, the logical answer is no. And despite the many reasons why you wouldn’t, we can all agree that one of them is to save water and energy, whether it is in order to save money or save the environment.
At USF, this is a common scenario. Of all the 253 buildings, there are few that have movement sensors that activate lights; nonetheless, the a/c, computers, and other energy appliances remain turned on. On residential buildings, all lights are on despite the fact that sun can enter through the windows and could be able to illuminate the area. Through campus, water sprinklers are being used even if it’s raining and some are located where most of the water falls on the cement. Furthermore, water is carelessly used, and sometimes even wasted.
This problem is urgent and needs to be solved soon. Not only we are wasting money, but we are also carelessly thinking of the consequences it has in our environment. The more potable water we use, the less potable water that the world will have. Changes must be made locally, nationally, and internationally. Furthermore, we have energy thanks to energy industries that produce energy by processing oil (fossil fuel). If we use more energy, more oil needs to be processed, which means a decrease in our reserves of fossil fuels and the increase of contamination of our atmosphere.
As USF students, we feel that we need to take action in order to solve this problem that many people overlook and consider insignificant. This problem is important because the misuse of water and energy is costing USF vast amounts of money that students have to pay towards something that could be controlled. The goal of this petition is to spread consciousness of the problem and have an easy but accessible way of action for all USF students, staff, families, and friends.

4. Control FPL
FPL customer support is horrendous! We paid FPL $2500 in the last 30 days. 8 days later one of their representatives showed up at our door demanding $500 we asked very politely if he could wait 1 minute (60 seconds) and he told us NO! I am shutting off your power! Can you belive $3000 in 1 month and 1 week for a 4 bedroom sigle family house??
We had to drive 4 miles from our home to a pay center and pay them $500 to have our power re-connected and when we called them they told us "we will have someone out there in 24 hours".
Unbelievable!! They cant wait 60 seconds for us but expect us to wait 24 hours for them. We have 3 children in our household and one has severe asthma but FPL didn't give a damn!
Then to reconnect our power they demanded we have a police escort with them.
I guess this company has NO respect for the people paying their salary. We ALL need to stand up and put this monopoly out of business!!
PS: They are holding a $800.00 deposit of mine now for 2 years with no interest or my control over when I will get my money back. Who are these people?? The mob? The KGB? Why the hell can our government not shut them down like Adelphia cable due to their fraud and illegal activities? Pres. Obama, we need your help. Mr. Charlie Crist, we need your help. PLEASE.
5. Northern Road Nursery Development
Petition against development – Planning Application S/06/2223
We the local residents strongly appose Planning Application S/06/2223
This comprises of the demolition of 1a 9 and 11 Northern Road. Garage lockups, nursery glasshouses and erection of 31 2,3,4 bedroom dwellings and associated works - to include a new access road.
Having seen the above plans and spoken to a planning officer we are writing to express our concerns and strong objections to this proposed development.
We submit the following reasons for this objection:
RISK TO SAFETY FROM INCREASED TRAFFIC
The demolition of the 2 houses and the build of the new road and 31 dwellings will invariably cause a huge amount of noise, disruption and general disturbance to residents and commuters along the length of Northern Road.
There are 2 primary schools on this road. As this will be the main route in and out of the development, the increased traffic flow at peak times causes us great concern. In addition the local amenities will not stretch to an increased population – in particular the schools and car parking.
UTILITIES
We fear that the added burden to the Utilities could in turn be passed onto the residents – increased Council Tax, extra demands on refuse collection, road maintenance, street cleaning and lighting, and sewage costs.
INCREASE IN NOISE, DISTURBANCE & SMELLS
The proposed road would run within feet of, and in parallel to, the full length of the rear gardens of no's 7 & 13.
This would greatly increase noise and environmental pollution levels, be a potential risk to both home and personal security due to the public highway access, and result in a loss of privacy to surrounding houses.
ADVERSE EFFECT ON TREES AND OPEN SPACE
An established tree at the front of the properties would need to be
removed.
EFFECT ON DAYLIGHT AND/OR PRIVACY
The proposed 31 dwellings - comprising of 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms is extremely excessive given the space available, as well as incredibly intrusive to the existing properties - a one metre gap between our rear gardens and the new buildings is just preposterous!
6. Annulment of Working on Saturdays and Rearrangement of Payment Day
This petition is made against Mc Orange Institute to annul Saturdays as working days, and also to set the last days of the month (30th or 31st) as the payment day for its staff. We, as the staff of the institute are not satisfied with the long working hours, which start at 8:30a.m. till 5:30p.m. during weekdays, and 8:30a.m. till 12:30p.m. on Saturdays. The normal office hours in Malaysia are from 9a.m till 5p.m weekdays, and 9a.m. till 12:30p.m. on alternate Saturdays. Alternatively, (This is especially true with educational institute/companies and Mc Orange is an educational institute.)companies which want to cease operation on Saturdays may extend the working hours from 9a.m. till 5:30p.m. during weekdays. In our case, not only we have to work an extra hour from Monday to Friday, we are also obligated to come to work on Saturdays. In the Malaysian Labour Act Enactment 1955, the maximum number of working hours per week is 48, and our cumulative working hours per week is well over this limit.
As for the case regarding our payment day, we request the company to set up the last day of the month as our payment day. This is due to all kinds of complications resulted from receiving late payment, well into the end of the first week of the next month. Most credit cards' bills, telephones and other utilities' bills are due within the first few days of each month, this has resulted in late payment of our utilities' bills, which requires us to pay fines.
