121. High Stakes Testing

High stakes testing in any standardized procedure or test may prohibit students from graduating high school or advancing to the next grade level. We believe that tests should not be the only measurement of success inclusive of knowledge gained, understanding of concepts, or performance skills attained. This type of testing can represent interruptions and violations of good teaching practices.

Our teachers are spending an inordinate amount of time preparing and
delivering lessons geared toward taking tests while greater comprehension of subject matters including discussions, debates, and creativity must take a back seat to high stakes testing preparation.

122. Dr. Crichlow for a UOIT teaching award

This is a teacher with great amount of knowledge and wonderful teaching ability. He brings life, knowledge, enthusiasm and creativity to all his lectures. The use of laptop for power point presentations gives the student a great amount of visual knowledge. He incorporates the use of technology well by providing some online discussions after class and the use of online lecture. He's a posted website which can better enrich our knowledge of our courses. The course outline designed by Dr. Crichlow was well in detailed to allow his students to have a better understanding of the course.

Dr. Crichlow not only is willing to help his students with course work. His open mind aids students with their other problem like how to cope with life in this new university. The skill we are able to obtain by his guidance includes responsibility, critical thinking and initiative.

The designs of his courses are very interesting. Dr. Crichlow was able to schedule in three days to bring students of both the Rights and Freedom and Immigration Law to the Lindsay Correctional Institution, where students were able to learn first hand what it's like to be in the field of Criminal Justice. His hard work in incorporating material from the text books to acquiring guest speakers to speak and share their own experiences with our class.

Dr. Crichlow's visions for this university are vast and will take a few years to achieve, but with his focus and determination, it can be done in less amount of time.

March 20, 2006

This petition is now closed. Thanks to those who signed.

December 24, 2004

As many of you may have read in the Thresher, the Dean of Humanities has decided not to retain Drs. Fernando Casas and Jill Carroll as the lecturers of HUMA 101 and HUMA 102. Dr. Casas had such an impact on my education at Rice that I felt I should do something about it.

I know that Dr. Casas and Dr. Carroll have made an impact on so many students at Rice and I feel that it would be a huge loss ot the university if they left.

This is a petition to Dean Wihl to rehire Drs. Casas and Carroll as lecturers of the HUMA 101 and HUMA 102 classes. If Dr. Casas or Dr. Carroll has made an impact on your education, please take a moment and sign it.

If you have time, write a personal letter to Dean Wihl and tell him about your experience with Dr. Casas or Dr.Carroll. His email is gwihl@rice.edu. If you do, CC President Leebron (president@rice.edu), Dr. Eugene Levy
(provost@rice.edu), and Dr. John Hutchinson (vpsa@rice.edu)

138. Establish UAB Identity

I, along with my fellow UAB colleagues, wish to stress the importance of campus identity. We believe that a strong identity will bestow a sense of pride, unity, and school spirit, which are integral parts of the college experience. While UAB's campus is beautified with statues representing the principles on which the institution was founded, it is lacking in what the university is working towards: Tradition. By signing below I agree that a statue promoting school spirit should be erected in conjunction with UAB's new undergraduate admissions office/parking facility.

141. Keep Professor Binta Colley on Faculty

As of Fall 2003 semester, Professor Binta Colley, a fine and outstanding professor of philosophy, education and other related courses faces the possibility of losing her job.

In our education system today, we cannot afford to lose professors with exceptional teaching skills because they are devoted to helping their students gain great knowledge and love for the subject they are embarking.

Professor Binta Colley is one of the most outstanding student-oriented teacher York College or America has today and unfortunately, she was informed that she could be out of a job base on how she teaches and grades the students.

I had the opportunity of taking one of her philosophy classes, and it is unlike any other class that I have taken before. Not only does she use the Socratic method of teaching, but she promotes critical thinking in all areas and also provokes exceptional learning and application out of all her students. No student is left behind. If for any reason a student is experiencing difficulties in any area, Professor Colley is available by phone, office hours, virtual classroom, and email to assist each student in all areas. If by chance she is unable to help you, then professor Colley directs you to the appropriate place.

Great teachers in all areas and levels of teaching should be cherished, appreciated and awarded. If any thing should be done to her, an award should be handed to her. LET US PROTECT OUR HARD WORKING PROFESSORS. KEEP PROFESSOR BINTA COLLEY ON BOARD ACTIVELY!!!

The iMacs in our lab are unable to support the required upgrade to Mac OS X that is needed to run the new versions of these programs.

147. Drinking and Driving Education in Texas

The first place to start regarding increased knowledge and education of drinking and driving as a problem with significant consequences rests before the college years. Middle school and high school administrations only minimally touch the surface in educating young children. For example, Students against Drunk Driving (SADD) is an organization in which students join and sign a written contract stating that no matter the circumstance, he/she will phone home for a ride rather than drive, if intoxicated. It has been argued by parents and educators that such types of organizations essentially promote underage drinking. However, the fact of the matter is that the contemporary mentality among many school age children is that drinking is cool and getting behind the wheel after having a drink can inevitably be observed across the country. Thus, organizations such as SADD serve as accident prevention rather than drinking promotion.

A severe limitation of such programs is that they are optional. SADD is an extra-curricular club that students may opt to join. Having compulsory meeting times in which social issues such as drinking and driving are addressed can help increase awareness among school age children and better prepare them for responsible decision making in college. Additionally, a student petition by students at the University of Texas-Austin would aid in alerting school officials of the need for greater education in middle and high school age children, in preparation for college and its increased liberties.

149. Add Dr. Russell to our Blue Cross Blue Shield Network!

This petition's goal is to add Eric G. Russell, DC, to the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Network allowing the residents of Commerce, TX the right to choose Dr. Russell for their Chiropractic care.

This peition is directed to Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas. Its goal is to add Eric G. Russell, DC, to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Network, allowing the citizens of Commerce, Texas the right to choose Dr. Russell for their Chiropractic care. Dr. Eric Russell is the husband of Dr. Yvonne Villanueva-Russell, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University-Commerce, and has opened a Chiropractic office, Beacon Chiropractic in Commerce, Texas. Dr. Russell has appealed the decision denying him inclusion as a participating provider within the Blue Cross/Blue Shield network since the recommended number of Chiropractors within a 75 mile driving radius of Commerce has been met. It is my desire as a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Texas policy holder (Texas A&M University-Commerce, Commerce ISD and Zurn/Quest employees) to add Dr. Russell to the in-network provider list so that I may have freedom of choice concerning my healthcare providers.

150. Students against the George Washington University (GW) Increasing Tuition

"[Is there] going to be a raise? Do lions eat meat?" Stephen Joel Trachtenberg

Petition against The George Washington University (GW) increasing tuition.

It's time to take a stand. On February 24, 2003, the GW Hatchet announced a tuition increase will be voted on by the Board of Trustees this Friday. This comes on the heels of last year's 4.9% rise in tuition. The administration's nonchalant attitude towards tuition hikes is unacceptable. However, until we, the students of GW, make our displeasure known this is the kind of treatment we can expect. Join a mass assembly of students as we make a public demonstration of our opposition to the economical burdens being put on us by the administration's lack of fiscal prudence. We ask the administration to re-examine a budget which includes multiple costly expansionist projects and extravagant spending on programs like Colonial Inauguration (CI) and Parent's Weekend before they choose to further increase our tuition.

On Wednesday, February 26, 2003, we will protest in Kogan Plaza and J Street. Please participate and take a stand by signing this petition.
