1. TfL and Greenwich Council: Crooms Hill is not a main road
In 2009 TfL widened the junction of the A2 and General Wolfe Road. This has made it easier to cut through Crooms Hill and historic Greenwich than to stay on the A2 and use the strategic road network to access central London.
Crooms Hill is of strategic importance to the community, as it borders Greenwich Park. TfL and Greenwich Council must introduce specific traffic calming measures to prevent large amounts of traffic rat-running through this residential street.
2. Safer Crossing at the junction of Lewisham High Street, Courthill Road and Whitburn Road
We note that Transport for London agreed last year that pedestrian safety at the junction of Lewisham High Street, Courthill Road and Whitburn Road needed to be improved. They now consider that traffic flow is more important than the safety of pedestrians.
This remains a very busy and dangerous crossing and we believe immediate action to improve pedestrian safety is required.
We demand a ‘Green Man’ pedestrian crossing to help people cross the road safely at the junction of Lewisham High Street, Courthill Road and Whitburn Road.
3. Boris: Install mirrors that save cyclists lives (Petition for Paula)
On April 5th 2011, on a clear afternoon long before rush hour, London cyclist and student Paula Jurek was knocked down and killed by a lorry turning left from Camden Road into St Pancras Way. She was just twenty.
She joins many other cyclists killed or gravely injured in the same circumstances in London, but if you click the image above to sign this petition for Paula, and many others, you can help ensure this doesn't happen again.
Her death could have been prevented by three things, one of which is so cheap and simple it could be done tomorrow.
As Boris Johnson tries to coax more cyclists onto our roads, he must also make the same effort to keep them safe. Here’s how:
1. MIRRORS FOR LORRY DRIVERS: In 2010, Mr Johnson introduced "Trixi" mirrors, mounted at junctions to give lorry drivers greater visibility on their left sides and to prevent these kinds of accidents.
But he installed only 39 of these mirrors for the entire capital.
He said they would be "reviewed", but their effectiveness has already been demonstrated in Europe. In January, he was asked when this review would be available. His answer: "TfL will shortly be discussing the results of the trial… to retain the existing mirrors and to install further mirrors." That was January. Where are the results? Where are the mirrors?
Both lorry drivers and cyclists have agreed the mirrors are a big help. Even the Deputy Chair of London's Transport Committee and one of Mr Johnson's own colleagues, Caroline Pidgeon, says these mirrors are an important part of improving cycle safety. But Boris has stalled.
The mirrors do not cost much to install or maintain, and the process involves no disruption. They save lives. We need more, now.
2. CITY TRAINING FOR LORRY DRIVERS: Lorry drivers cannot always see cyclists. While a few London boroughs have specifically trained lorry drivers to watch for them on the capital’s busy and sometimes narrow roads, most boroughs still haven’t.
3. SAFE CYCLE ROUTES IN CAMDEN: There are few provisions for cyclists in Camden, yet many students and young people bike there every day. Camden's roads are packed and its cyclists need safe cycle lanes and cycle boxes. The junction at which Paula died has only one cycle box. Why? It should have three.
Camden Councillor Paul Braithwaite has been pushing TfL to improve cycling provisions where Paula died. "There are far too many deaths on Camden Road," he says.
4. TfL extension to surrounding areas
I believe that there should be a TfL extension into the surrounding areas of Greater London, this includes Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Cheshunt, London Colney etc. This doesn't have to include the whole transport network, but it would be excellent if surrounding areas could at least have the London Bus service with oyster readers.
This would ideally increase money for TfL and it'd really create more commuter links into London and be more affordable. We may have standard train services but they only run every 30 minutes, sometimes an hour, and I believe that a more efficient and faster service would be favoured!
South London needs more trains.
Even if you haven’t heard of our South London Line (SLL) you may well have used it. It runs between Victoria and London Bridge via Battersea Park, Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High Street, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Queens Rd Peckham and South Bermondsey. It makes a neat U shape through the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, City of Westminster, Wandsworth and the City of London. It is a vital radial and orbital public transport link for these boroughs and we particularly value it because, unlike long distance services, its possible to find space to get on at our inner London stations and moreover, it serves 3 of London’s most important hospitals – Kings and the Maudsley at Denmark Hill and Guys at London Bridge.
Mayor Boris Johnson (Chair of Transport for London) has agreed to cuts this vital transport line for South London and has ditched all plans to improve services.
If this goes ahead hundreds of local residents, patients and staff at the hospitals who had used the South London Line service to get to Victoria or London Bridge will have been robbed without consultation or warning. Journeys will be complicated by hitherto unnecessary changes en route.
South London badly needs more public transport services, Camberwell in particular. And has anyone mentioned climate change in all this ? Fewer cars should mean more trains!
We have until 2012 to fight off the loss of the South London Line so lets show Mayor Johnson, Transport for London, the Rail Industry and our Transport Ministers that we are not going to be robbed!
6. Show TfL support for a W1 bus
Are you a Resident of HORNSEY Pk. Rd., NEW RIVER VILLAGE, CAMPSBOURNE, WIGHTMAN / ALROY or any LADDER Road west of Haringey Passage? Would you like to have a “WIGHTMAN Rd BUS” (like the W5) travelling between MORRISON’S (Wood Green) and WAITROSE (Holloway Rd)?
Proposed Route: MORRISON’S Carpark – Hornsey Park Road – N.R.V./Campsbourne (detour) – Wightman/Alroy – Finsbury Park (Hornsey Gate) – Upper Tollington – Tollington Park Rd – Hornsey Rd – Tollington Rd – WAITROSE Carpark
Returning by: Holloway Rd – Seven Sisters – Hornsey Rd etc. This route would suit shoppers, commuters by train, as well as school pupils and visitors to Alexandra and Finsbury Parks.
7. Build a station at Surrey Canal Road
The Government and the Mayor of London have reached an agreement to fund Phase 2 of the East London Line Extension, linking Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction
But long established plans for a station at Surrey Canal Road are under threat – this would mean that there will be no new Phase 2 station in Lewisham at all, despite the route passing through.
The station would help unlock the regeneration potential of North Lewisham which has been earmarked for almost 10,000 new homes and up to 6,000 new jobs.
Help our campaign – help secure our station – help your community.
8. Rename TFL Underground Station ‘Aldgate East’ to ‘Brick Lane- Bangla Town’
Strangely there are two underground stations in London with the same name though there is more than enough reasons to rename one or both of the stations. Our request is to rename the ‘Aldgate East’ station to ‘Brick Lane- Bangla Town’. Why so?
Brick Lane is a place full of historic significance and well known throughout the world for many reasons. But in recent days it has been elevated to new height as the curry capital of London, the lane is cluttered with Bangladeshi restaurants serving traditional Bangladeshi/Indian sub continental food. People from everywhere visit here to satisfy their hunger for this traditional spicy food. Also every year the Bangladeshi community holds a big traditional Bangla Fair which is visited by thousands. Also the exit of the ‘Aldgate East’ is just by the Brick Lane, whereas Aldgate is at little distance.
