1. Free Pinar Selek

2. Free Saba Azarpeik

IRANJOURNALISMFREEDOM OF THE PRESS

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has arrested 11 journalists accused of cooperation with foreign-based, Persian-language media organizations, several chief editors of Iranian outlets said Monday.

The development is a major escalation in a press crackdown that reflects Iran’s zero tolerance for those who work with dissident media or outlets deemed as unfriendly or hostile.

In recent years, Iran has denounced Voice of America and the BBC’s Persian service, describing them as arms of US and British intelligence agencies, and has warned of severe repercussions for Iranian journalists and activists caught having contacts with these outlets.

Also, Tehran has repeatedly accused the United States and Britain of seeking to provoke unrest in a bid to oust the country’s clerical rulers, and has frequently accused opposition figures and supporters of being in league with the nation’s enemies.

Many Iranians regularly tune in to the BBC and VOA’s Persian-language radio and TV channels, despite a ban on satellite dishes and government attempts to jam the airwaves.

The chief editors of the arrested journalists told The Associated Press that the 11 were taken into custody late on Sunday because of their “foreign contacts.” The editors, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of fears of reprisals, refused to say if the detained were accused of providing material specifically to BBC or VOA.

The arrests followed last week’s warning by State Prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehei who said journalists who are in contact with “hostile foreign media” would be punished. Ejehi described such reporters as “serving the enemy’s purpose.”

The detained journalists — seven men and four women — were identified by their editors. They are from six different news organizations, including four daily papers, a weekly and the semi-official ILNA news agency.

Some of them have in the past spent months behind bars over critical writings that were carried by foreign-based Iranian dissident media or writings that supported feminist activities.

One of the editors said three of the arrested were from the reformist daily Etemad. Three others were from the reformist Shargh daily, whose editor said they were arrested at the paper’s building.

Another journalist, Saba Azarpeik from the Tejarat-e-Farda weekly, was also missing and feared arrested, according to a colleague, who also spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

Meanwhile, the semiofficial ISNA news agency said Monday that the conservative Tabnak news website, close to the former Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezaei, has been blocked. No reason was given.

Since 2000, Iran’s judiciary has shut down more than 120 pro-reform newspapers and jailed dozens of editors and writers on vague charges of insulting authorities.

Iran: arrestati giornalisti riformisti a 5 mesi dalle elezioni

3. Free Behman Ebrahimzadeh

Monday, 14 January 2013
Letter from prison by labour activist Behnam Ebrahimzadeh about his sick son

I was putting up with the prison pain, but suddenly tonnes of grief came down upon me

I don’t know when it was, maybe eight to nine days ago, when I heard that my only child, my 13-year old Nima, already overcome by the pain of separation from his father and all kinds of deprivation, has been admitted to Mahak Hospital, a hospital for children with cancer; a bitter experience and a shocking moment, which have pierced deep into my soul.

I don’t know about the condition of my darling child. My wife doesn’t clearly tell me, but she hopes that I would soon be given leave to come and see them. I have therefore asked for leave, which if granted would certainly have a great impact on me and my sick child. This is the only moment in the life of a father, which he doesn’t want to lose under any circumstances. So, thanks to my friends, I have come up with a property surety, and like in the past when I have asked for things, I have been given a favourable answer. But maybe this time too it will turn out to be just words.

Under these circumstances, with thousands of thoughts in my mind about my son Nima, remembering the empty promises of those in charge has turned my suffering into an excruciating pain. I have to be at the side of my sick child. This is my right. I am a political prisoner, whose anguish over his son’s illness has made everything look dark. There are several courses of action open to me, one of which is to go on a dry hunger strike. Maybe I’ll get an answer that way.

I want to choose patience and endurance, while resisting and putting pressure; however, anything can happen. First, deprivation from food, leave, proper visits, telephone, medical care, etc., and now deprivation from the right to be at the side of my sick child is what is going to break me down.

I insist on my demand for leave to visit my child; at the same time, I appeal to everyone to support the rights of my child and to help his recovery. Who would have thought that someone who for years has fought for children’s and workers’ rights, would one day be in prison for his beliefs and defence of children, and then hear that groups of compassionate people, friends and comrades are visiting his sick child, but he himself isn’t able to stroke the feverish head of his child?

I will defy and resist, as I have done up to now, but who is answerable for all this injustice and suffering? Who is responsible for the condition that my child Nima is in?

I have hope in the strong and kind hands of the doctors and nurses, hope in the support of friends, comrades, colleagues and the good and caring people of the country. I am most grateful to all those who over these past days have been asking about my child and who have visited my family and son.

I thank all the doctors and nurses of Mahak Hospital and all those who have been helping to aid the recovery of my son. In the hope of a speedy recovery for my son Nima Ebrahimzadeh and all sick children.

12. Save woman sentenced to death by stoning in Sudan

SATURDAY, MAY 26, 2012

URGENT APPEAL for woman sentenced to death by stoning in Sudan

A 20-year old Sudanese woman was sentenced to death by stoning on 13 May, on charges of adultery. She did not have access to a lawyer during her trial, and was convicted based on testimony she gave after being beaten by her brother. She is being detained with her baby. She in psychological distress and does not understand the nature of her sentence.

The criminal court of Ombada, Khartoum state, central Sudan sentenced Intisar Sharif Abdallah to death by stoning on 13 May on charges of adultery, under article 146 of Sudan's criminal code of 1991. She had initially pleaded not guilty, but admitted to the charges at a later hearing after she was reportedly beaten by her brother. The conviction was based solely on this testimony. During her trial, Intisar Sharif Abdallah was denied access to a lawyer. She also had no access to an interpreter, despite the fact that she has a limited knowledge of Arabic, which is not her native language.

Intisar Sharif Abdallah, who has three children, is being detained with her youngest son, who is four months old. Her two other children are in the custody of her family. It is unclear when the authorities intend on carrying out the sentence. Members of Intisar Sharif Abdallah's family are in the process of filing an appeal at the Court of Appeals of Ombada. The death sentence was imposed in violation of international law standards, and an execution would violate both international and Sudanese law.

Please write immediately in Arabic, English or your own language:

- Calling on the authorities to stop the execution of Intisar Sharif Abdallah; to overturn her stoning sentence for "adultery while married" and release her immediately and unconditionally;

- Urging the government to have the best interests of Intisar Sharif Abdallah's child as their primary consideration during the judicial process and until she is released;

- Stressing that under international law the execution of people after a trial that does not meet international fair trial standards is a violation of the right to life, and the execution of nursing mothers is likewise prohibited under international law;

- Calling on the Sudan government to establish an official moratorium on executions in the country, with a view to abolish the death penalty, in line with the growing global trend and UN General Assembly resolutions, and urging the President to commute all existing death sentences.

Narges Mohammadi, 39, the deputy head of Iran's Defenders of Human Rights Centre (DHRC), a rights organisation presided over by the Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi, was picked up last year by security officials who raided her house in middle of the night without a warrant for her arrest.

She was taken to Tehran's Evin prison where she was kept in solitary confinement but was released after a month and taken to hospital.

Mohammadi, a mother of two and winner of the 2009 Alexander Langer award for her human rights activities, has since developed an undiagnosed epilepsy-like disease which causes her to lose control over her muscles temporarily during the day.

It emerged on Tuesday that a court in Tehran has now convicted her on three charges: acting against the national security, membership of the DHRC and propaganda against the regime, for which she has received an 11-year sentence in total.

"I'm not involved in politics, I'm only a human rights activist," Mohammadi said by phone from Tehran. "I was informed of the 11-year sentence through my lawyers, who were given an unprecedented 23-page judgment issued by the court in which they repeatedly likened my human rights activities to attempts to topple the regime."

Mohammadi, who is also a member of Iran's National Peace Council, said she would appeal against the sentence.

In March, the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, a US-based non-governmental organisation, reported that security forces had stolen Mohammadi's medical records from the hospital. Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, a political activist, has spent a third of his life in jail.

Ebadi said Mohammadi's conviction showed Iran's judiciary was manipulated by intelligence and security officials.

"Whilst in jail, Mohammadi was threatened by her interrogator that she would be given at least 10 years if she did not cease her activities and now we see that the interrogator's prediction has come true," she said.

The British Foreign Office called on the Iranian government to overturn her "harsh" sentence . "[Her conviction] is another sad example of the Iranian authorities' attempts to silence brave human rights defenders," the FCO said. "She has done nothing but work for a human rights NGO under difficult circumstances to fight for the legitimate rights of the Iranian people."

Amnesty International also reacted with outrage to Mohammadi's conviction. "The verdict claims that Narges Mohammadi is a liar and has tarnished the image of Iran," said Drewery Dyke, Amnesty's researcher on Iran. "However, this latest verdict regrettably does exactly that by showing what Iran's judiciary thinks of the government's so-called commitment to uphold human rights in the country and indeed exactly how it deals with those advocating international human rights standards."

According to Amnesty, Mohammadi has campaigned for an end to death penalty for those convicted under the age of 18, for which she has long been targeted by the authorities.

14. Free Hamid Ghassemi

Risk of imminent execution of Hamid Ghassemi-Shall; death sentence sent to the Enforcement Unit

Madyar (Mojtabah) Saminejad

The request for a new hearing for death row Hamid Ghassemi-Shall was denied and his death sentence has been sent to the enforcement unit at Evin prison. This prisoner is now in grave danger of imminent execution.

After the decision to implement the death sentence, Evin prison officials unexpectedly contacted Ghassemi’s family and instructed them to come to the prison to see him.

I spoke with Hamid Ghassemi-Shall’s sister about this unexpected demand for visitation. “Today we were granted an unplanned visitation. We were planning on going for visitation on Monday as usual but they insisted that we go see Hamid today (Saturday) in prison. My mother and I went to Evin prison today. They took us to the Office for Implantation of Sentences and brought Hamid there also. We were told that Hamid’s execution order had been sent to the Office for the Implementation of Sentences. Mr. Khodabakhshi, the official in charge of the implementation of sentences stated that the decision has been finalized and will be implemented.”

The sister of the prisoner who is mourning their other sister who passed away a few days ago continued. “I don’t know what to do anymore. I beg you to help us in any way you can. We are all in shock and so is Hamid. When we went to the prison we had to tell Hamid the news of his sister’s death. After I shared this terrible news with Hamid, he was taken to a corner and told by officials that his execution order would be implemented.”

Hamid Ghassemi is an Iranian-Canadian citizen who was charged by the Revolutionary Court with “spying and having relations with the Mojahedin Khalgh Organization (MKO)” and sentenced to death. Last year Hamid’s death sentence was commuted on the eve of the date of his execution. Now since a year has gone by judicial authorities have made another request for execution and Hamid’s life is in danger again. His court dossier has been sent to the Enforcement Unit of Evin prison and the death penalty can be carried out at any moment.”

Hamid Gassemmi traveled to Iran in 2008 to visit his family. While he was visiting the country, his brother Alborz Ghassemi was arrested on espionage charges. Hamid was also arrested two weeks later in May 2008 as he was attempting to follow up on his brother’s case at the judiciary offices of the military forces. When he was incarcerated he spent the first 18 months in solitary confinement.

The brothers were not allowed any phone calls or visitation with family during the first 8 months of their incarceration; they were deprived of their right to an attorney and subjected to severe torture.

Hamid’s brother, Alborz Ghassemi a naval officer died in prison on May 2010. Officials claimed cancer was the cause of death while his family said Alborz had never had any previous health issues.

In her conversation with me Hamid Ghassemi’s sister added, “No matter what we did to find a solution to this situation nothing happened. Mr. Jaafari, head of Branch 31 of the country’s Supreme Court told us that he read the evidence presented in the court dossier and even though he agrees Hamid Ghassemi is innocent, did no commit any crime and does not deserve to receive such a punishment, Mr. Jaafari said there was nothing he could do or say about it. I told him that answering a human being is much easier than having to answer to god. Despite this I don’t understand why he is staying silent.”

Hamid Gassemi’s sister continued. ”The reason he gave me for not accepting another hearing is that a request had been made in the past and rejected. For this reason they will not do anything despite knowing that no crime has been committed and they refuse to give any answers.”

15. Free Mahvash Sabet

Mahvash Sabet, One of the Leaders of Iran’s Baha’i Community

Mahvash Sabet is a 57 year old Baha’i citizen. Prior to being fired from her public sector job because of her Baha’i faith, Sabet was a teacher and school administrator. For the past 15 years, Sabet headed the Baha’i Institute of Higher Education (Azad Science Institute) providing a venue for higher education for Baha’i students.

Mahvash Sabet was born in Ordestan in 1953 and moved to Tehran when she was in fifth grade. She has her undergraduate degree in Psychology. She began her profession as a teacher and was later promoted to the Head of School. In her capacity as Head of School, Sabet collaborated with Iran’s National Community for Literacy. Like thousands of other Baha’i educators however, after the Islamic Revolution Sabet was also fired from her job and banned from any public teaching position. Sabet and her husband Siavash Sabet have two older children. Sabet is a member of “Yaran-e-Iran” (Iran’s Friends) a group that in the absence of a “National Spiritual Center” handled the administrative requirements of the Baha’i community but was shut down by the Islamic Republic.

Arrest

Mahvash Sabet, one of seven leaders of the Baha’i community in Iran was arrested at her residence on March 8th, 2008 and transferred to solitary confinement at Evin prison’s ward 209 where she endured months of grueling conditions.

Charges and Sentence

Sabet spent many months in solitary confinement at Evin’s ward 209. On February 11th, 2009 Tehran’s Security Court announced that Sabet and the 6 other leaders of the Baha’i community had been charged with “spying for Israel and blasphemy and propaganda against the Islamic Republic”. It is worth mentioning that although Sabet had been charged, her lawyer had not been provided with an opportunity to review her case file.

After approximately 20 months, Sabet’s first trial took place on January 12th, 2010 at the 28th Branch of the Revolutionary Court under Judge Moghiseh. A verdict was not issued during this trial and as a result a second trial was scheduled for a later date. On April 10th, 2009 the trial for Sabet and six other Baha’i leaders did not take place and was once again postponed this time to April 12th, 2010. After months of arrest and postponement the last trial handling the charges against Sabet and 6 other Baha’i leaders finally took place in mid June 2010 and lasted 3 days. In August 2010, the 28th Branch of the Revolutionary Court sentenced Fariba Kamal Abadi to 20 years prison on charges of “spying, acting against the national security of the country, and being a Mohareb (enemy of God). The sentences for Mahvash Sabet and the other six Baha’i leaders who had been illegally kept under temporary detention for more than 800 days were finally reduced to 10 years imprisonment by the Appeals Court in September 2010.

22. Free Ashraf Alikhani

Let us not let her be alone. They summoned Setareh Ashraf Alikhani for thinking and writing her thoughts. They sentenced her to three years of imprisonment for thinking about freedom. They summoned her to make sure no one can hear her.

She must stay in darkness to be silenced. Torture and deprivation of human rights awaits her in a cell. In breathless silence and anonymity but with pride and dignity she went to prison. She preferred suffering imprisonment and deprivation in order to defend the Iranian people for their right to live, to exist and to think. She wrote in her statement: „ I will speak my mind and say what I think even if I am killed in prison like my cousin, but I will never live in disgrace. I will live in honor and nobility “ :

24. Free Shahin ZeinAli an Iranian journalist

Appeal on behalf of Mr. Shahin ZeinAli an Iranian journalist who is scheduled to serve a harsh sentence for activities namely membership in a legal political party and participating in peaceful gatherings.

We are writing to you on behalf of Mr. Shahin ZeinAli, a 29-year-old Iranian journalist who is scheduled to serve a harsh sentence for activities that do not appear to constitute a crime under the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, namely membership in a legal political party and participating in peaceful gatherings. What follows is the information that has caused us a great deal of concern.

According to the Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), in the morning of Wednesday, June 16, 2010, Shahin ZeinAli, a 29-year-old Iranian journalist was sentenced to two years, three months incarceration by Judge Pirabasi of the Revolutionary Court of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Reportedly, two years of the above mentioned sentence was for Shahin's alleged conspiracy against national security of the Islamic Republic of Iran through membership in a political party (Pan-Iranist Party). The remainder of Shain's sentence, 91 days, was for participating in illegal assemblies that resulted in chaos [presumably in the post- June 2009 disputed Iranian presidential election], interview with foreign media. Shahin will also have to pay a monetary penalty, in the amount of one million, five hundred Rial (approximately $150000).

Last year, Shahin was arrested at his residence, detained at Section 240 of notorious Evin prison in the north of Tehran. He was released after serving three weeks in solitary confinement. During the search of his home, his computer, computer files, academic and journalism-related books, news archives and other personal items were confiscated. Shahin has awaite the reurn of his personal property by the authorities to no avail. The security forces refuse to return to him what they have taken illegally from him.

Shahin was asked to present before Section 25 of the Revolutionary Court for last defence after four months of having no information on the status of his case. He attorney, Mr. Mohammad Mustafayee, continued his case to June 16, 2010, at which time he was notified of his two-year-three-month sentence.

We are asking the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including the presiding judge, Mr. PirAbbasi, Mr. Larijani, the heard of Judiciary, and Mr. Seyed Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, to commute this unjust sentence and apologize to Mr. ZeinAli and his family for undue hardship and anxiety caused by Mr. ZeinAli's arrest and related events (search, seizure of property and solitary confinement).

We thank you in advance for your kind and prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Incarcerated labor activist Reza Shahabi has been on hunger strike for over 2 weeks with no information about his condition.

Reza Shahabi is an employee and union member who has spent almost 19 months behind bars in Evin prison. He embarked on a hunger strike to protest being held with an unknown circumstance.

With the passing of 2 weeks since his hunger strike, his sister Zahra Shahabi expressed her worry for her brother’s physical condition in an interview with BBC Farsi. She said, “We were able to contact my brother by phone on December 4th, 2011 but he spoke with great difficulty and was in very poor health. The medical authorities have said that my brother is in need of surgery.”

Even though 5 months have gone by since her brother’s last court session, Mrs. Shahabi’s efforts to obtain any information about his situation form those in charge have been futile.

Labor activist Reza Shahabi was arrested on July 2010 and according to his sister the charge against him stems from “contacts with foreigners.”

29. Free Fereshteh Shirazi

An informed source close to 38-year-old women’s rights activist Fereshteh Shirazi told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that since her arrest on 3 September 2011 in the city of Amol, she has had very little contact with her family.

The source told the Campaign that Shirazi’s trial was held on 28 September, and despite promises made to her that she could see her son on 25 September, she was not allowed to do so and her visit was postponed.

Last week, security officials searached Shirazi’s home and seized some of her personal belongings. Since her arrest she has only been able to see her brother once and only for a very short period of time. She is prohibited from seeing other members of her family, including her son.

Shirazi is a management student and women’s rights activist who has been active in the Campaign for Change for Equality since March 2009. She was interrogated several times in the past year because of her civil society activities and what she has written in her blogs. Her arrest was probably connected to these activities. According to the source, since her arrest she has been forbidden from seeing or calling her family members.

In her blogs, Shirazi had written several personal notes about one of her brothers who was executed in 1983. According to the source, Shirazi’s family is worried about her detention in Amol Prison because she has very little contact with others outside of the prison and she is being held with other dangerous criminals. The conditions at Amol Prison are very poor due to the fact that it was originally a residential home, confiscated by the government, and is located in the middle of the city in a residential area. Prisoners in Amol Prison, unlike in Evin, are not allowed to cook food and they can only eat prison food that is of very low quality. Unlike Evin and Rajaee Shahr prisons, there is no exercise equipment or educational classes and there are no rehabilitation programs.

Amol Prison is estimated to be able to hold 250 prisoners, but currently houses over 700. According to the source, the prison holds about 60 female inmates, and the rest are men. According to former prisoners from Amol, due to the overcrowding of the facility prisoners frequently engage in infighting. The majority of those held in this prison are charged with drug-related crimes, and include both native and non-native prisoners.

30. Free Journalist Hassan Fathi

Journalist Hassan Fathi arrested after being accused of collaborating with the BBC

Human Rights House of Iran - Fars News Agency reported that the “colleague at the illegal network BBC, has been arrested in Tehran for spreading lies and disturbing public opinion.”

This is despite the fact that BBC News has many times announced that they do not have any journalists or partnerships in Iran.

The regime-affiliated Fars News Agency said in its report that “security agents arrested Hassan Fathi who in the past days made public statements on a live broadcast on BBC Persian and made Zionist allegations about Iran.”

The regime-affiliated news agency in its report said that since Mr. Fathi gave an interview with BBC Persian this proves that he is cooperating with the foreign news station, and that "based on this information it is evident that he is an official reporter working for this illegal network.”

Fars News Agency in its report said that according to “informed sources” who were not named, Hassan Fathi’s “partnership with BBC has been going on for a long time and [the charges against him] are not just related to this recent interview.”

As a reminder, in September of this year five other documentary directors were arrested in Tehran based on the same allegations and they have all been released.
