1. Polytechnic Students Should NOT Pay Adult Travel Fares - SINGAPORE
Currently, students from polytechnics and universities pay twice as much in bus fares compared to their peers in junior colleges (JCs) and Institutes of Technical Education (ITE), who are classified as post-secondary-level.
Polytechnic students, who in all technicalities are doing their post secondary studies, are considered tertiary education students. We end up paying adult fare! Our counterparts in junior colleges get to enjoy the subsidies while we are denied the subsidies.
"With the comparison of MRT concession pass between JCs and Polytechnics, JC student pay about $25 while Polytechnic student pay about $45 per month for the same service." Quoted from Edison Lim's Speech, titled : Student Rate For All Polytechnic Students.
Even as a soon to be polytechnic student, he/she would too have started paying adult fares even before entering a polytechnic. He/she is no longer given student subsidies, even though their age is clearly below that of an adult.
What is most absurd is that, when queried by MP for Nee Soon GRC about student concessions on trains and public buses, the Transport Minister Mr. Lui Tuck Yew, response was that it would cost transport operators $28 million more per year.
Can’t the government fork out the $28 million dollar per year, to provide subsidies for polytechnic students who are doing post-secondary studies? Isn’t the job of the government to provide for the welfare of its people? And would a $28 million pay cut from SMRT’s $895.1 million, or SBS’s $720 Million, affect them? I think not.
2. Support Scoliosis Checks in UK schools
Scoliosis is a severe curve to the spine. Little of the population know about scoliosis so aswell as raising awareness I am trying to make the number of severe cases in scoliosis drop by spotting the condition early by having checks in UK schools.
Usually scoliosis leads to a serious operation when the curve becomes to big injuring your heart and lungs, However the number of cases of people having the operation could drop if the new scheme was to take place
3. Stop Discrimination against Brentford Children in Secondary School Admissions
Local parents continue to be concerned about the recent allocation of places in mixed secondary community schools. Many have been in contact with local councillors and L B Hounslow Education department regarding what they see as discrimination against applicants from the Brentford area. They say the strict reliance upon the distance criteria from home to the nearest mixed secondary school (e.g. Chiswick Community School) effectively rules out their chances of a successful application.
Following several parent meetings a petition has now been launched to focus the council’s attention on this issue prior to the meeting of the council’s executive on 6th April to fix the policy for 2011 onwards. Parents are particularly concerned that given the rise in Brentford’s population the situation will escalate and in the near future few Brentford children will have any choice in being educated locally.
4. Do NOT Delay Hillingdon's Building Schools for the Future Programme
In 2008 the Government announced that Hillingdon secondary and special schools would be included in a £150 million programme of modernising and improving our schools and making their facilities fit for the 21st century.
A year ago the council sent out to local schools a brochure setting out their plans on how this money would be invested in improving our schools. The Council said at that time that “We will experience exciting new changes in Hillingdon schools, making them suitable for 21st century learning.” The Council told us that the plan was to start in the south of the borough and include the north of the borough as soon as possible.
The Council should have agreed its plans with the Government by now so that we can secure the funds and start the work. However, on Thursday 18th March 2010, the leader of the council informed secondary head teachers that the Council is delaying agreeing the improvement programme plans until after the election and is laying off the bulk of the staff working on the programme. In addition the national Conservative education spokesperson has said that if the local programme has not reached “financial close” by the election “then it won’t be guaranteed.”
In effect this means that the £150 million programme for our schools is now at serious risk.
5. Secondary School Central Bedford Town
Building a thriving secondary school for our thriving community.
A new secondary school for Bedford Town:
o do you want your 11 year old to be able to walk or cycle to school?
o do you want your child to be able to move through school with their friends?
o do you your child to have easy access to after school activities?
o do you want improved local facilities that the whole community can use?
Do you want a secondary school that’s at the heart of our local community?
Bedford Borough Council’s Proposal for the future organisation of schools in Bedford Borough does not include a Secondary school for the centre of Bedford Town – we think it should!
6. Use Mother tongue Primary Education
Pupils are being taught outright in a foreign tongue (English). Students in secondary level are forbidden - being fined if they speak in their mother tongue (Iluko in Northern Luzon, Philippines) and even in Filipino - our national language! in Metro-Manila colleges & universities.) Competencies in mother tongue should be encouraged - must be legislated.
7. LOTE should not be compulsory in Secondary school
Children in year 7 -10 at Secondary schools should be able to have a choice if they choose to study a language or not.
Many have gone through school and found it a waste of time for them, only blocking out other subjects that they would rather do.
Many Boys struggle with this subject and is cause for misconduct by teachers and unruly classes.
8. Swimming Sports at Highvale Secondary College
As you are all aware, OUR SWIMMING SPORTS GOT CANCELLED FOR PEOPLE WHO AREN'T COMPETING!!!

We MUST get this event back.

9. Holy Trinity Gives Second Chances
On December 20, 2006 a student at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School, who we will refer to as simply Matt, was caught in the act of trafficking.
Although we realise this is highly illegal and any persons caught involved in this kind of behaviour should be given strict consequences, we are asking the Halton Catholic District School Board, and Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School to show mercy to Matt in this situation.
We aren't asking Matt to be exempt from any legal action. We are asking for Matt to be allowed to continue to attend school at Holy Trinity, if not this year then next year when he has served his probation or any charges that have been laid. As a catholic community we believe in second chances, Jesus showed mercy to those who have sinned, we are asking that the administration do the same.
Thank-you.
10. Federal Student Aid Policy
July 19, 2006
To reform the Dependent Policy to qualify for Federal Financial Aid (College). This would change how an indivdual is classified when applying for aid to fund post-secondary education.
Those not eligible as a dependent on their parents' tax returns wold no longer be classified as dependents on the FAFSA.
This would allow those young people who do not recieve financial support from their parents to qualify for many more grants and loans.
11. Mr. Masson As Senior Girls Volleyball Coach
The reason for this petition is to appoint Mr. Ray Masson as the senior girls volleyball coach for College Heights Secondary School during the 2005-06 season.
This being the case, Mr. C Horswell, coach of the team for the 2004 season, would have to step down from his position.
12. Shorten Secondary School Hours in the UK
The children of the UK are being deprived of so many important thing in life:
. Lesuire Time- As so as they arrrive home from school many have some homework they have little time for themselves, to socialise, hobbies or just play out with friends and those who do don't get the vital work done.
. Sleep- This may sound silly but with the most kids stilling up till at least midnight and having to wake up at 7 a.m they are not getting the sleep required to be alert and focused in school. this results in them not getting the education they deserved.
So what i'm proposing is that the Government cuts school hours down so all secondary schools would start at 9 a.m and finish at 3.15 p.m with a 20 minute break and 50 minute lunch.
13. Complaint about Math Teaching at McNair school
This petition is directed to the Mathew McNair Secondary School of Richmond. This petition is a complaint about Mr.Campbell's teaching at McNair school.
14. Get a competant Principal for Abbotsford Senior Secondary School
I believe that the students of Abbotsford Senior Secondary School deserve a competant, open minded school principal in place of the current one (Mr. Roger). The following are examples of Mr. Roger's closed mind:
- Suspending male students for wearing black makeup (after years of allowing females to do the same thing)
- Degrading comments on the visiting Beijing students.
Please, support the students of Abbotsford Senior, and help them get a competant principal, willing to take action on important points, take part in school pep rallys, who will listen to the students and most of all, leave his/her office every so often intstead of sitting around all day!
