91. Continue CCAP for Higher Education

Colorado Childcare Assistance Program will not continue assistance to those seeking Higher Education. Only high school students and those seeking to become part of the workforce will be assisted.

By not continuing to assist with childcare for those seeking higher education more people will continue to be on government funding programs without every improving their lives. If childcare assistance is to continue helping those seeking a higher education, those receiving it will be able to get better jobs/careers, improved work will receive higher pay and give a hand up not a hand out. Why cut those out trying to do better for their family? Being able to get assistance in childcare while receiving a higher education will get people off assistance quicker allowing funding to open up for other government programs.

If there is no opportunity to get a better education, thus get a better job then someone may be on this program for its entirety. It is important to help those who are trying to help themselves by bettering themselves. If we are to break the cycle of poverty we must be willing to give one a path to do so.

92. We want WCS Lacrosse

I am collecting a petition for a lacrosse team at the school as every school in our county has the sport. It is a fast paced sport that is growing fast.

Lacrosse is a team sport of Native American origin that is played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet called a crosse or lacrosse stick. The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose netting that is designed to hold the lacrosse ball. Offensively, the objective of the game is to use the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball in an effort to score by shooting the ball into an opponent's goal. Defensively, the objective is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning.

The sport has three major types: men's field lacrosse, women's lacrosse and box lacrosse.

98. Support Classroom Preparation Day

At the beginning of each school year, teachers spend the first week in staff development workshops.

Traditionally, teachers are given one day during this week to set up their classroom in preparation for 1st day of school and the entire year. Last year the principal did not give us time to prepare our classrooms during the week. Consequently, teachers had to spend time on Saturday, on their own time, to prepare.

As a consequence, many teachers were not prepared and had to continue their preparation during classroom time, conference time, lunch time, and after school. The principals at the other schools in the district did give their teachers time to prepare for school.

99. Support Shorter School Days

Our children have to sit on a bus for 30 minutes to wait for the High School Bus. We understand that it is to alleviate the price of fuel for the buses, but it is not our children's fault that the district is having money problems.

We feel that the school day should be shortened like it use to be or make the classes longer so our kids do not have to wait on a bus.

100. Stop Senate Bill 6

Help petition against Florida Senate Bill 6 which would require school systems to evaluate and pay teachers based on their students standardized test scores.

Teacher experience would not matter either and student test scores would determine which teachers are laid-off or not. This is an unjust bill that unfairly evaluates teachers and needs to be stopped!

102. Help Save Rowland Elementary School

By now, we have all heard the distressing news of Rowland Elementary School being added to the list of possible school closings, due to a $115 million deficit in the DeKalb County School System.

At this time we are asking our Rowland community to come together to save Rowland. The community depends on this school to be there for the parents and our main focus-the children. For the past 43 years Rowland has provided quality education to our students, teachers that go beyond the point of duty, resource programs for parents, quality care and training for our special needs children cultural events to join for our Rowland family and the community together, among many other services our school has to offer.

We cannot allow for this to happen to our children and even future attendees of this area. Please join us in fighting for Rowland. Our children are worth this fight; your child’s education journey starts here. Everyday here at Rowland we are laying the foundation for intelligence, dependability, honesty, citizenship, independence, self-esteem, and so many character and educational traits they will need not just for learning, but for life.

We as parents are not happy with closing down Rowland because of many different reasons. To name a few, where will our children be forced to attend school, how close will the new school be, are we as parents comfortable with the distance the children will have to ride the bus to school? Also, what will happen to our physical school building if left unattended? What will the community become of then?

104. Stop Discrimination against Brentford Children in Secondary School Admissions

Local parents continue to be concerned about the recent allocation of places in mixed secondary community schools. Many have been in contact with local councillors and L B Hounslow Education department regarding what they see as discrimination against applicants from the Brentford area. They say the strict reliance upon the distance criteria from home to the nearest mixed secondary school (e.g. Chiswick Community School) effectively rules out their chances of a successful application.

Following several parent meetings a petition has now been launched to focus the council’s attention on this issue prior to the meeting of the council’s executive on 6th April to fix the policy for 2011 onwards. Parents are particularly concerned that given the rise in Brentford’s population the situation will escalate and in the near future few Brentford children will have any choice in being educated locally.

106. High Schools specifically for kids diagnosed with Aspergers and High Functioning Autism

I am a parent of a five year old child diagnosed with High Functioning Autism (HFA).

Since my son was diagnosed with his condition mid last year, I have learnt that increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with HFA and Aspergers Syndrome and these kids struggle to survive in mainstream education as they get older. This is because their different learning style, social isolation, acute anxiety and various sensory sensitivities leads to many not being able to reach their full academic potential in the mainstream setting and this is a real shame because these kids are extremely intelligent.

I have been disturbed by the amount of parents I am meeting with HFA & Aspergers primary school kids of various ages, who are saying that mainstream high school will not be an option for their kids and that they plan to home school for high school.

I have also been shocked to hear from parents of HFA and Aspergers kids who have already finished high school, say how traumatised their kids are after finishing school, having withstood years and years of relentless bullying and now they struggle to function in the adult world. I think that we need to get small high schools set up in Australia specifically for students with HFA or Aspergers. At the moment in Australia there seems to be no other social schooling options other than mainstream for the kids at the higher end of the autism spectrum.

Now that there is hard evidence that these kids brains are wired differently and they have a different learning style to their neurotypical peers, educators need to consider this option. I also think it is unfair that these kids have to put up with high school bullying (as the statistics are that 90% of kids with ASD's get bullied at mainstream high schools). I know that many high schools have special ed units in them but other than learning difficulties, the playground is where the main problems are and these kids are being permanently mentally damaged by being made to withstand our system and ‘fit the mould’.

I am of the view that having a few small high schools with a modified curriculum tailoring to Aspergers and HFA in each state, could really benefit these kids and if large ASD friendly companies (such as banks, engineering, IT type firms) got on board with sponsoring kids for on the job work experience programs as part of the curriculum, it could lead to them having a real chance at succeeding at life and being less traumatised by not having to put up with neurotypical bullies.

Other countries such as the US and UK already have these types of high schools available as an option.
I find it incredible that this has not occurred here yet.
If you agree please sign this petition and it will be delivered to the Australian Federal Government.

UPDATE - 9/4/10 - For people in NSW, I have been informed that there is currently a Parliamentary Inquiry being held into the education of students with disabilities and special needs and they will still accept submissions from the public. I will be making a submission and encourage everyone else to do so as well as this will be another great way for people in NSW to get your concerns heard. The link to the inquiry details is -

Also - If there is anyone who has a child with Aspergers / HFA currently struggling through mainstream high school and you are prepared to talk to the media please contact me via the petition link below as there has been some interest.

UPDATE 2/8/10 - The link to this petition has been forwarded on to all state education departments and federal ministers. I have received some correspondence back, generally saying that they have taken note of our concerns and will keep it in mind when formatting future policies. The petition will be closed down shortly after the federal election. Thanks to all for taking the time to sign it and I hope that we do see change in the not too distant future for all our kids sakes.

107. Barn aside Bottom Farm, Beacon Hill, Penn

If you care about our AONB, please sign this petition by March 30, 2010.

The Barn aside Bottom Farm (at the bottom of Beacon Hill) is owned by a Ferrier with horses located in a field (owned by Sita Waste Management Company) behind his residence in Denham. The official application for this barn on Beacon Hill is to store farming vehicles and hay for his farm in Denham!

The barn is larger than in the submitted drawings, and is almost complete, even though planning permission has not been granted yet.

No doubt you have seen the lorries up and down the lane. Local residents have witnessed waste materials delivered and burnt on site.

If this barn is really for storage of large farming vehicles and for hay both required by horses in Denham, then there will be frequent haulage of large vehicles on Beacon Hill.

There may be an ulterior motive with this building.

In 2006 the owner had a plan rejected by the Denham Council for a similar styled barn to be used as a Sand School and hay store. Sand School/Dressage training may be a possible connection with this construction.

Nevertheless, it certainly is an eye sore in an AONB for the many walkers who pass by.

If you are resident of Penn/Tylers Green, you can sign this petition to have your say. It must be done by March 30, 2010.

110. Hire a Licensed Guidance Counselor at Barnum High School

In the past Barnum High School has employed a State Licensed Guidance Counselor. During the past two years Barnum High School has used a Dean of Students (who is a certified teacher/not educated or licensed as a Guidance Counselor) to fulfill the duties of a Guidance Counselor. The Barnum High School Students deserve a Licensed Guidance Counselor.

The hiring of a Guidance Counsellor is already in the Operating Budget of the school. This change will not eliminate any jobs as the teacher acting as a "Dean of Students" is tenured and will revert back to her teaching duties (without loss of pay or grade). Barnum High School Staff and Students deserve the immediate hiring of a Licensed Guidance Counselor.

Dangerous bend in New Road/Kiln Barn Road, Ditton. This is a narrow bend with HGVs crossing onto the other side of the road to use this bend. It is in close proximity of Ditton Junior School where parents and guardians walk their children to school on the pavement around this bend.

These vehicles use 24 hours - 7 days a week. We suffer noise from these HGVs night and day. The summer is worse as certain residents have to leave their garden and go inside.

114. Stop Broward School Board from Cutting Arts & Phys. Ed. Classes

Facing a $100 million deficit, the Broward School Board debates their options for cuts. The cuts suggested by district staff included cuts to art, music, and physical education at the grade school level.

It's time to stop putting children on the back burner! It was bad enough when they cut our funds, now they want to cut our children's programs.

We need to stand up for our children and fight! Especially when the board is wasting money on an upcoming recruiting drive in New York. Superintendent James Notter and the School Board approved taking out an ad in the New York Times and agreed to send "recruiters" to the Big Apple to search for new employees.

Why are we recruiting in NY when we have approximately 800 teachers statewide which were laid off last year!

115. Review Club Hours for the youth of the LeoGoodwin Foundation Teen Center

Changing club hours would be beneficial for the youth of the LeoGoodwin Foundation Teen Center. at this moment the club is open at 3pm on schools days , but on Non-school days its open from 9am to 5pm. The teens that attend this center start arriving btween 11am to Noon. As we all know most teenagers don't wakeup early in the morning.

This brings the benefit of having the club Hours changed to either 11am to 8:30pm or 11:30 to 9pm, the teens would be able to spend more quality time at the club and interact with more activities during the summer and on non-school days.

117. Support the continuation of funding for chaplaincy

This petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the House the National School Chaplaincy Program, built on the excellent history of school chaplaincy in Australia, which was introduced by the former Coalition Government in 2007/08 with a commitment of $165 million for its first three years. It was endorsed by Prime Minister Rudd who said “they (Chaplains) actually are providing the glue which keeps school communities rolling”.

The program offers pastoral care and spiritual guidance to all. Chaplains necessarily have religious beliefs which underpin their work. These beliefs are representative of the school communities the chaplains work in and they do not hinder chaplains from working with those of other beliefs or none. It operates in 1915 schools and enjoys strong support among principals, schools and in the community generally.

The Rudd Government has extended funding for the program, at a reduced level, until the end of 2011, after which time there may be no more funding despite the program's social benefits, sound administration and strong community support. If elected, the Coalition would continue funding the program in its current form, at its current level of $165 million over 3 years.

120. Insuring Our Children's Education and Safety

Just before Christmas my son Jeremy was beaten up by known gang members at school. As a result the boys were expelled and the police were going to prosecute them. My son was suspended for fighting. This has been a very difficult time for my family and my son has been in therapy because he feels victimized everyday.
