3. Support a Safer A5

The A5 or Watling Street in Warwickshire is part of a road network that is more than 2000 years old. Clearly, when constructed , it was never intended to have the volume of traffic that uses it and the peripheral roads we have today.

The result of having an over burdened road network are issues around safety , predominantly, and the environment. We cannot expect this road network to keep taking and taking extra volume via urban regeneration, and new dwellings without addressing this issue.

A new programme of growth is planned for the area , via MIRA, a technological institution that is bringing 2500 new jobs to the area. However, with that 2500 new jobs, comes 2500 new cars. This coupled with other projects along the A5 mean that the road will become an even bigger safety and environmental hazard.

We welcome regeneration, but the changes to the A5 planned by MIRA do not address the issue , and are a cheap attempt to meet their own needs at the expenses of the local community. They have disregarded a previously agreed plan that took years of planning and consultation by the Highways agency , and have now proposed creating even more bottle necks at junctions.

There have been 3 fatalities on the A5 this year, let there be no more.

4. Safe crossing at Buckhold Road

We recently moved into the borough and are very concerned about the safety of the crossings at Buckhold Road. On Buckhold Road there is only one proper and safe pedestrian crossing, which is located towards the north end of the road.

This means that the only options for residents wishing to enter King George's Park through the entrance at Mapleton Road (at 122/124 Buckhold Road level) is to use one of the very unsafe island crossings or walk north to the safer crossing and then walk back again (close to 15 min extra walk).

The reason the island crossings are so unsafe is that in rush hour it is more or less impossible to cross the road without having to stop on the island. We have three children, 8 months, 3 years, and 5 years and with a buggy the island can hardly be seen as a safe place for all of us in the middle of the traffic! The islands are small and hardly suitable for more than 2 people so with cars and buses often passing it at high speeds, in some cases most certainly above the speed limit this is a serious health & safety risk for families that wishes to use them. We're seriously fearing an accident is bound to happen each time we are crossing the road.

Many mummies/nannies and neightbours do agree this is not a safe environment for our children to cross the road/ go to the park. There are also a lot of pedestrians using the unsafe crossing island at 122/124 Buckhold Road coming from the Southside Shopping Center via the park.

5. Calne A4 - Say "NO MORE"

A public meeting is being held at John Bentley School at 7pm on Thursday 3rd November to discuss the Hills planning application to increase the site at Lower Compton so that it becomes three times as large as it is now and thus triple the sheer amount of lorries on the A4 through Calne and the villages.

It is intended that all recyclables from Wiltshire will be taken there for sorting – then taken away to other parts of the country.

Wiltshire Council’s planning policies have already allocated land at Stanton St Quinton to use for a ‘waste transfer facility’ and not at Lower Compton.

10,000 signatures need to be gathered to show local opinion doesn’t want any further HGV movements.

We need your support to attend the meeting and get as many other people there as possible.

6. 20 mph speed limit on Barnet residential streets

Barnet's road casualty figures are a disgrace. In 2010 it had the highest number of road deaths in London and the second highest number of people suffering injury on our roads.

See: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/Cycling/casualties-in-greater-london-2010.pdf

Injuries from accidents have risen sharply in Barnet in the years since the council declared it was planning to remove all road humps without introducing any alternative traffic calming measures.

20 mph speed limits have been proven by several studies to reduce road accidents by a large proportion.

7. Petition For The Installation of Speed Bumps On Cemetery Road, Barnsley

Cemetery Road is the main bypass around the town centre linking the road that goes from Manchester to Doncaster - there is heavy traffic on it all day and "boy racers" use it like a speed circuit at night.

This is in a residential area. it's only a matter of time before there's a bad accident so I want to see speed bumps installed.

8. 20 mph for Islington: Blackstock Rd to Highbury Grove

Islington’s first Green Councillor, Katie Dawson, successfully secured cross-party commitment for a 20 mph limit on all the borough’s residential streets.

Islington Green Party is now calling for this to be extended to the borough’s main roads too.

The benefits of 20 mph limits should not be confined to those who live on the quiet side roads. Many Islington residents live, shop, work and travel to school along our main roads.

Extending the limit would make it easier to cross the roads and encourage more people to visit local shops. The safety benefits are well established: if you are hit by a car at 35 mph your chance of survival is 50%. If you are hit by a car at 20 mph your chance of survival leaps to 97%.

Islington is a borough with very limited green space, so it is critical our streets are designed for people and not just as corridors for moving vehicles. 20 mph limits on our main roads would help achieve this by:

• reducing the risk and severity of collisions
• improving accessibility for older people
• making our streets more sociable
• improving health by reducing air pollution
• smoothing traffic flow by reducing bunching at junctions
• reducing noise by minimising acceleration and deceleration

Many residents, including drivers, have told us they’d welcome the benefits of a default 20 mph limit on our main roads. If you feel the same and want to see 20 mph limits on the A1201 (Blackstock Rd, Highbury Park and Highbury Grove), please sign our petition and send a strong message to Islington Council and Transport for London that Islington’s residents want and deserve roads that are safer, calmer and less polluted.

[When signing the petition, please note that it is optional to give your address & postcode. They will NOT be publicly displayed, but would add weight to the petition particularly with the council.]

9. Seal Menzies Road

Here is some historical background information on Menzies Road in Menzies Creek:

• At a local meeting, our council confirmed that School/Menzies Road was a priority road to be sealed in the following years 'road works' at no cost to resident home owners…that was 29 years ago.

• Approximately 10 years ago School Road was sealed, commencing at Hermons Corner and finishing at the Menzies Creek Primary School. This part of School/Menzies Road was sealed simply to appease the tourist bus drivers who complained that the road was too bumpy for their passengers. The council initially informed residents that they had sealed this section of road with a new sealing technique and if it proved to be satisfactory, the last part of the School/Menzies Road would also be sealed. However they later withdrew that claim about a new technique, and when the Shire of Sherbrooke was amalgamated with other smaller shires to form the Shire of Yarra Ranges, all promises were consequently annulled.
It was your rate money that was spent to improve the comfort level of tourists on a two minute journey of School/Menzies Road.

• The council, CFA and Emerald Police all acknowledge that Menzies Road is a vital safety access/detour road in the case of emergencies such as a bushfire, and a main escape route for thousands of people from Belgrave, Kallista and Selby. If there was a car accident on our road during a bushfire evacuation everyone would be trapped.

• The council acknowledges that Menzies Road is a main thoroughfare for 3 schools, CFA traffic, tourists from Victoria’s second largest tourist attraction (Puffing Billy), and is a known shortcut for locals avoiding slower moving vehicles on the main road. In addition to this it is also the road that 68 families call home.

• Several serious accidents have occurred on Menzies Road due to the dangerous road conditions, along with regular minor accidents where motorists are forced into gutters. We would like to hear all residents’ experiences with accidents or near accidents due to the unsafe road conditions.

• The Special Charge Scheme is a deterrent the council presents whenever anyone enquires about having the road sealed. Not everyone can afford to pay for the contribution expected by this scheme, which the council knows full well. So when over inflated figures of $15000 or more per household are mentioned they know people will be put off and the problem will go away. Menzies Road is a very dangerous road and we definitely should not have to pay to achieve safety on our road and in our community, that is the responsibility of our council.

• When the road is sealed it must be constructed with appropriate speed control devices such as speed humps and/or chicanes.

• Fine particles of dust during dry conditions exacerbate many lung related health problems such as asthma and may even contribute to the onset of such diseases.

10. Enough is Enough

Too many innocent people get injured or die every year, because of someone's stupid choice to get behind the wheel and drive whilst under the influence of alcohol.

11. STOP Fines for Defects

VEHICLE owners hit with defect notices will have to pay new on-the-spot fines, expected to rake in millions for the State Government.

The new fines - $120 for a minor defect and $250 for a major defect - will apply from July 1.

Minor defects include bald tyres, faulty brake lights and broken windscreen wipers, while major defects include faulty brakes, illegal modifications and faulty suspension. Defect notices do not currently incur a fine, although a vehicle owner must pay $26 to have the notice removed after repairs are made.

The Motor Trade Association's SA president, Colin Clark, said a blown light bulb was an example of a fault which would incur a $120 fine and a defect sticker.

12. Victoria Street Safety Initiative

Currently Pedestrian Priority (40km/h) in Victoria St is LESS THAN 40% of the week.

On SUNDAY, the BUSIEST DAY OF THE WEEK, the speed limit is 60 km/h ALL DAY.

60 km/h is TOO DANGEROUS a speed at any time for Victoria St.

13. Bring back the Think! hedgehogs!!!

Theses lovely adverts taught me how to cross the road. the ones they show now are just going to traumatise children.

The old think! adverts featured hedgehogs singing about how to cross the road and due to their catchy jingles, were easy to remember. The current adverts tend to be depressing or just never shown.

Think! Should really use their namesake and bring the singing hedgehogs back.

14. Place double yellow lines to stop drivers putting our children at risk

We would bring to your attention the danger of drivers parking there vehicles on the kerb of valley road near where the lolly pop lady crosses our children (who attend lillington primary school ) over the road for school this reduces her vision of the road and the children's vision of the road therefore reducing the safety of our children's journey to school and home again.

15. Reduce the speed - to keep our children safe!

McKean Street is a busy street in Caboolture which has three Schools, six Daycare centres, a Hospital, Community Health Centre, TAFE and a Train Station surrounding it. With all of these community venues we need to make sure that our children, residents and pedestrian workers are safe at all times.

At present we only have one permanent crossing which is the traffic lights at the intersection of McKean and Manly Streets. This is not enough considering the amount of children and residents that walk and ride around these areas. We do have 3 existing crossings surrounding the area, but these are only active during short periods before and after school.

We need something more permanent for those people who wish to cross the road when they are not available.

16. Review Safety at Corbetts Roundabout, Caerphilly

The traffic flow and congestion at the Corbetts Roundabout in Caerphilly has already caused several accidents / deaths and tailbacks causing impatience in this town, this in turn leads to dangerous risk taking in order to continue their journey beyond this roundabout.

17. Appeal for a Safer Crossing; Peppard Road/Buckingham Drive

Peppard Road/Buckingham Drive is a very busy, fast, road. It has numerous islands along it for pedestrians to cross the road, and allowing them to wait in the middle until the oncoming traffic clears. However, these are not suitable when there are more than one person crossing the road. It makes it more treacherous to cross when children and prams are added to the equation.

As a parent you usually end up standing in the road. There is really only one safe place to cross which is the pelican crossing by the Emmer Green Precinct. Many children have to cross this stretch of road because of where schools are positioned and their catchment areas are. All set out by Reading Borough Council.

New school catchments have been introduced for the 2010 school intake, which could result in more cars using this stretch of road as parents will choose to drive because it is too far for them to walk.

18. Improve pedestrian safety on Lansdown Road, Bath

Many pedestrians, including young children, cross Lansdown Road every day at its junction with Julian Road and Guinea Lane.

At present, this is a difficult and dangerous crossing due to the heavy volume of traffic in all directions.

Bath and North East Somerset Council should consider all possible measures to improve the safety of pedestrians crossing here.

This petition is supported by the Circus Area Residents Association.

19. Make Arran's Roads Safer

After a recent incident where a toddler had a near miss while crossing the road in Brodick, we would like to call on all the community of Brodick and the rest of Arran to join us in our petition requesting safer roads on Arran. We would request that a pedestrian crossing be placed somewhere along the main road in Brodick.

Our concerns lie with all pedestrians and their safety along this stretch of road and many groups, namely Brodick Mother & Toddlers, Arran Childminders' Group, Brodick Nursery School and Brodick Primary School, are all held along this stretch of road.

We are aware that slow road markings have been implemented recently, after cars have collided with the Ormidale Pavillion's wall and a more tragic accident which resulted in a fatallity of a local pedestrian.

We would like to see further measures taken to ensure a safe crossing for all the community and a slowing down of traffic along this stretch of road.

20. Safety First for the A9 at Glenbervie

Falkirk Council and Transport Scotland are proposing the M876 Glenbervie Special Roads Scheme - to build East-facing motorway slip roads in Larbert from the M876 onto the A9 Stirling Road.

An additional 5000 vehicles per day are expected to use the slip roads.

Our specific objection to the scheme is the proposed off-slip that has been designed to join the A9 by means of a dangerous t-junction. The location of the proposed t-junction is directly opposite a number of accesses to residential properties on the narrowest stretch of the single-carriageway road.

If allowed to go ahead, this t-junction will directly endanger pedestrians and vehicles both on the A9, on the slip road and accessing residential properties.

A safer exit could be created by re-routing the off-slip through the adjoining brownfield site to join the A9 at the A88 North Broomage roundabout. This roundabout already provides west-facing access to the M876.

21. Road Safety at Potter St, Craigieburn

Victorians are more likely to die violently as the result of a road crash than from any other cause

Every life we lose on our roads is one too many. Road trauma causes great pain and heartbreak to those Victorians who lose family and friends in road crashes – and places a huge economic burden on our entire community.

arrive alive 2008-2017 sets out how the Victorian Government will continue its leadership in road safety to deliver a safer system for all road users and make a significant reduction to road trauma.

Road safety is a shared responsibility and all Victorians can contribute to safer roads and safer driving behaviour. By working together, we can substantially reduce serious casualties from road crashes and spare many Victorian families the grief of suffering the loss or serious injury of a loved one on our roads.

The above information was taken directly from the www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au website. As a regular user of Potter St, Craigieburn, i witness too many accidents and not enough action from Vic Roads to prevent it.

If you are a regular user of Potter St, Craigieburn and share my concerns about Potter St safety, please sign my petition below.

How can this be addressed? Through implementation of the Department for Transport and Department for Communities and Local Governments recent publication "Manual for Streets".

Even though your local Tory County Councillors would rather pour money into rural areas, you can push for improvements in Rectory Farm, by supporting our Labour petition.

23. Stop the Keresley End speeding before a child is killed

Residents of Howat Road, Somers Road, Hill Road, Old Winnings Road and Charity Road in the village of Keresley End, CV7, will attest to the following: -

Young residents of the village are causing both a nuisance and a road safety concern by driving motor cycles in an unsafe and erratic way along the above streets.

In majority of these incidents, the young person will be by far exceeding the legal speed limit for said roads. This is also potentially creating a dangerous situation for other road users and pedestrians.
