1. Pledge to Speak Up Against Gender-Based Violence in India

There are more than 600 million women in India who are exposed to rape, dowry death and sexual harassment every day. 18, 359 rape cases were registered in India in the first three quarters of 2012; a woman is raped every 20 minutes in India.

Another form of gender-based violence is the killing of baby girls and female foetuses, causing India to lose 3 million girls since 2001.

Due to the patriarchal culture rooted deeply within this nation, women are treated as second class citizens or even worse, as possessions. These women suffer in silence because their cries are falling on deaf ears.

2. Team Up Against Sexual Assault

In the wake of several high profile sexual assault cases that highlight how school officials, coaches and community members are willing to turn a blind eye when crimes are committed by those involved in their local sports team, we ask that the Commissioners of Pro-Sports leagues take on a Zero Tolerance policy towards players and teams that are involved in such crimes. Any player involved in any such crime is banned from pro-leagues for life.

3. STOP RAPE IN INDIA

On Friday the 15th of March 2013, a Swiss girl was raped by several (possibly 7 or 8) Indian men, while her boyfriend was tied to a tree. This act of violence is not standing alone.

Through the past years, there have been many acts of (group) rapes in India. Rape is a direct violation against the human rights, and therefore it should be strictly prohibited.

The Indian government is not taking enough action against it. That’s why the rapes still continue. Therefore the United Nations should make sure the Indian government is going to take action.

4. Death Sentence for Anene Booysens rapists

"Impose the harshest sentences on such crimes, as part of a concerted campaign to end this scourge in our society," said Zuma in a statement.

Anene Booysen (17) was found by security guards at a construction site in Bredasdorp on the weekend. She was gang-raped and mutilated, and later died of her injuries in hospital. Reuters reported that she had been cut "from her stomach to her genitals". Zuma described the crime as shocking, cruel, and inhumane. "It has no place in our country. We must never allow ourselves to get used to these acts of base criminality to our women and children." Booysen reportedly identified her attackers before she died at Tygerberg Hospital on Saturday evening.

Doctor describes brutality

Die Burger reported on Thursday on the brutality of her injuries as described by the doctor who treated her. He said that he felt it necessary for the public to know the extent of her attackers' cruelty. He described in detail how her torso was ripped open, after which one of the attackers stuck his hand in her and ripped out her intestines. "She lost a large portion of her intestines. That is why she didn't survive," The doctor said. Another source confirmed the doctor's description. The source said that police who appeared on the scene had to pick up Booysen's intestines which were strewn around her. They were covered in sand.

Arrests

Her 22-year-old ex-boyfriend, Johnathan Davids, was arrested in connection with the crime. According to a source Boosyen and Davids were childhood friends and visited each other's parents' houses. Davids appeared in the Bredasdorp Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on charges of rape and murder. He will appear again on February 12. A second man, aged 21, was arrested in Bredasdorp on Wednesday night.

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) said it was satisfied with the progress police had made so far. "The arrest of two men in connection with this vicious crime should serve as a lesson to rapists and murderers whose aim is to infect our societies with despicable evil," said Popcru spokeswoman Theto Mahlakoana. The union called on society to stand up against crime and share any information related to the incident with police.

Condemnation

Various other organisations and unions also condemned the crime. The Congress of the People (Cope) said the brutality of the Booysen attack, allegedly committed by those she knew, was not only shocking but an act of depravity. "Cope is horrified South Africa has unfortunately and regrettably become the rape capital of the world," said Cope MP Beryl Ferguson. She said this also proved that the department of women, children and people with disabilities, police, and communities had failed to curb this crime. "It is also deeply disturbing that neither of the departments seems to have any clue nor even a workable programme to ensure that women in South Africa are protected from rape," she said. Government expressed shock and outrage at the crime. "They must face the full wrath of the law… those who molest and abuse children have no place in a democratic South Africa," said Government Communication and Information System acting CEO Phumla Williams. – Sapa

6. Stop Syrian detainess from being brutally tortured and raped by Syrian authorities

Syrian detainees are being medievally tortured and raped by Syrian authorities, the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) accused.

At least 194,000 citizens, including approximately 9000 teenagers have been detained by Syrian regime forces. 1215 of these people have been killed, the organisation claimed, with a minimum of 60,000 enforced disappearances.

Subject: PETITION FOR STRONGER LAWS TO ENSURE BETTER SECURITY OF WOMEN IN INDIA

PETITION

Today we write to you in the aftermath of the incident, where a young girl of only 23 years of age was brutally gang raped and left to die while her friend who tried to defend her was beaten up.

We usually take pride in us being Indians, a country where girls are called the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi and are put at a pedestal to be worshipped. But sexual harassment is a less talked about subject that afflicts 50% of the population. It is a known fact, that every woman, be it then as our mothers, sisters, wives or friends, has suffered this indignation at some point in time and so much so that most of them silently bear this humiliation. It has become impossible for woman to move freely without a constant worry and a deeply ingrained fear.

What further, complicates matters is the attached stigma, which prevents most women from standing up against this crime. Police insensitivity in such cases and the lacunae in the law (Section 354 and 509 of the IPC being cognizable but bailable offences, and bail is known to be granted in a vast majority of the cases.), not being a deterrent enough, is contributing to the rising statistics of crime against women

The famous dictum, 'The role of the government is to make it easy for people to do good and difficult to do evil' is more relevant than ever. We therefore request you to act swiftly and decisively in this regards.

11. Harsher Sentences for Pedophiles

Pedophiles are not getting harsh enough sentences. They are given slaps on the wrist and are often free to re-offend soon after conviction. Here`s just 2 examples of many:

-David James Lebanc. He was one of the 2 men involved in the confinement and sexual assault of a 16 yr old boy for two weeks in Halifax. He was already facing pending charges from 2010 for sexual assault, touching a person under age 16, and making child pornography with a 2yr old and a 5yr old! Leblanc was released in 2010 so long as he didn`t go near children. He failed to comply in 2011, and served only 18 days in prison! This assault on the 16yr old boy was 100% preventable. Our judicial system failed that boy.

-Christopher Paul Neil. He served a mere 5 yrs. in a Thai prison for posting hundreds of pictures of him assaulting more than one child. He was arrested upon his return to Canada for being a threat to all children, yet was released a few days later so long as he promises not to go near children. Sound familiar?

As per recent news articles, Harper's C-10 crime bill gives harsher sentences to pot growers than to pedophiles. Something is wrong with that.

Why are these monsters allowed to get away with this? Our system needs some reform. As long as the penalties remain as slack as they are, this is going to keep happening.

12. George Galloway MP

George Galloway said the following in a video podcast which was posted online on 18th August 2012:
“Even taken at its worst, if the allegations made [against Julian Assange] by these two women were true, 100% true, and even if a camera in the room captured them, they don't constitute rape, at least not rape as anyone with any sense can possibly recognise it."

"I mean, not everybody needs to be asked prior to each insertion. Some people believe that when you go to bed with somebody, take off your clothes and have sex with them and then fall asleep you're already in the sex game with them. It might be really bad manners not to have tapped her on the shoulder and said 'do you mind if I do it again' - it might be really sordid and bad sexual etiquette, but whatever else it is, it is not rape, or you bankrupt the term rape of all meaning.”

From http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5B4I5F05jNg 22:20 onwards

The Sexual Offences Act 2003 section 4 says “a person (A) commits an offence if—
(a) (s)he intentionally causes another person (B) to engage in an activity,
(b) the activity is sexual,
(c) B does not consent to engaging in the activity, and
(d) A does not reasonably believe that B consents.”

“Whether a belief is reasonable is to be determined having regard to all the circumstances, including any steps A has taken to ascertain whether B consents." That means that if there’s any doubt, you should ask about consent.

Section 74 defines consent as "if (s)he agrees by choice, and has the freedom and capacity to make that choice" .

Section 75 (2) specifically states that where a person is asleep or otherwise unconscious, it should be assumed that they did not consent.

13. Make Sexual Assault a Non Bailable Offence

On June 26 2011, the Bombay High Court suggested that Molestation should be made a non bailable offence.

Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice Ranjana Desai orally directed the state government to take action to make the offence (molestation) non-bailable. “As this offence is at present a bailable one, the police tend to take it lightly and don’t take prompt action in such cases. This is what seems to have happened in this case as well. If it is made a non-bailable offence, both the police and anti-social elements will take it seriously,” Chief Justice Shah said. (FROM TIMES OF INDIA)

We, the citizens of India, have decided that enough is enough and we have to take some action. Rich offenders should not be able to escape with their crime due to their luxuriously surplus bank accounts. Hence, we present this petition.

14. MORE STRINGENT LAWS AGAINST RAPISTS IN INDIA

Its official: India 3rd worst offender in rape cases

India stands third, leaving behind countries like Sri Lanka, Jordan and Argentina, when it comes to rape cases, latest data of the Union Home Ministry suggest. Ahead of India are only the United States and South Africa.

There has been over 30 per cent increase in incest rape cases in 2009 over the previous year. According to a report released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), cases of incest rape have "increased by 30.7 per cent from 309 cases in 2008 to 404 cases in 2009

Also out of total rape cases of 21,397, 94.9 per cent involved offenders who were known to the victims.

According to the statistics, Chhattisgarh topped the list with most number of incest cases. The state recorded 107 such cases in 2009, accounting for the highest or 26.5 per cent of th According to some statistics, only one in 69 rape cases in India are even reported. Only 20 % of those reported result in convictions for the rape accused.

Rapes happen across the social strata in India. In the Indian villages, it is the poor villager's wife or sister or daughter who gets raped by another poor rowdy villager, and everyone from the local thanedar to the landlord. These rapes, unless the news becomes public due to unavoidable reasons, are never reported. It is reported in the newspapers or reaches the police only when a rape becomes part of a larger caste battle, family feud or political game. We do not hear about the massive number of them happening all the time.

The media will report a rape only when it is a different kind of rape - a 'normal' rape is not news. The police, even when they get to know of a rape, or even when a rape victim approaches them, almost always discourages the family from filing a complaint. Often they are threatened, if the alleged rapist is someone in a powerful position. Some other times, the police reminds the victim's family of the social repercussions and attention (and permanent social humiliation, no marriages for anyone else in the family etc. etc) and the victim returns home to wash away all evidence of the crime.

15. US/UN/MINUSTAH OUT OF HAITI!

Please sign this petition!

The history of the present occupation of Haiti by the US/UN/MINUSTAH forces is a history of repeated injuries, kidnappings and murders. The presence of the US/UN/MINUSTAH forces in Haiti is all having to do with the establishment of absolute control over the country in order to plunder, slaughter, rape subjugate and rob Haitians of their wealth, freedom and human dignity.

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces have kept in Haiti, in times of peace, a standing army of over 12,000 foreigners without the consent of the Haitian people.

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces have maneuvered to render its military force independent of, and superior to Haiti’s civil power.

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces have brought in large bodies of armed troops among the population and disseminated them throughout the country:

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces have preempted Haiti’s Constitution, and declared themselves invested with power to legislate Haiti’s laws in all cases whatsoever (Ex. Their recent involvement in the voting fiasco).

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces have declared and waged war against Haitians and by killing and maiming Haitians without due process (Ex. Raids on Citee Soleil, July 6, 2005 and again on December 22, 2006 among others).

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces have plundered Haiti’s seas, ravaged its coasts, burnt its towns, introduced deadly epidemics, raped its women, sexually assaulted its young men, and destroyed the lives of the Haitian people.

The US/UN/MINUSTAH forces are at this time contracting with large groups of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation, and tyranny they had already begun, with more and more documented circumstances of brutality & betrayal.

In every stage of these oppressions Haitians have petitioned and protested for redress in the most humble terms, but each repeated petitions have been met and answered only by repeated injuries, mutilations and killings. Haitians have appealed to the US/UN/MINUSTAH forces chains of command for justice and fairness, and Haitians have pleaded with them to disavow these violent crimes being committed against the people, however, everyone in the chains of command have been deaf to the voices of the people pleading for justice and of fairness.

As a direct consequence of this Declaration, relying on the protection of the Haitian people, R.H.E.C.I.F.S. is hereby urging the US/UN/MINUSTAH forces operating illegally in Haiti to reconsider their involvement in the killings of Haitians and ask that they quickly find a solution for a timetable to complete their withdrawal from the country, with peace and honor.

16. RESPECT GAY RIGHTS - SCRAP THE ANTI-GAY BILL

Addressing an audience of diplomats in Geneva, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton called for the rights of gay people to be respected.

"Gay people are born into and belong to every society in the world," Mrs Clinton said.

"Being gay is not a Western invention. It is a human reality."Reacting angrily to Mrs Clinton's speech, Ugandan presidential adviser John Nagenda told the BBC: "That fellow [Mr Cameron] said the same thing. Now this woman [Clinton] is interfering.

"If the Americans think they can tell us what to do, they can go to hell."

Uganda is a staunch ally of the US, receiving military assistance to fight a local rebel group - the Lord's Resistance Army - and has sent troops to Somalia to fight the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group.

Mr Nagenda said Uganda would continue to co-operate with the US on security and other issues, but added: "If they are childish enough to take away aid, we'll see what we do [in response]."

20. Save Hadi

Re: Asylum case of Mr Hadi Abdollahian holder of the UNHCR registration no 385-11C04414, reference number 2011/PLN/01217, national of Iran, born on 09/03/1991.

Dear UNHCR officer,

As a human rights activist, I am writing to express my deepest concerns regarding the status of the above-named asylum seeker whose application is currently under consideration in Turkey while he is waiting for his substantive interview to take place.

Whilst in Iran, due to his, and his father’s activities against the current regime, Hadi has been subject to such various ill-treatments as torture, rape, imprisonment and other forms of discriminatory behaviours, for which visual and medical evidences are available.

Hadi was the designer of two well-known websites both of which were later used to spread anti-regime materials. Evidence is accordingly available on the internet and shall be submitted to your office, too. Mr Abdollahian’s father, who was a senior airforce pilot during the previous regime of Iran, was killed in a suspicious road incident in Iran in 2008 following which the authorities refused to further pursue the case.

A brief summary of one of the events Hadi has be gone through would be as follows:

After the death his father, Hadi was contacted by the Intelligent Services agents, accused to be doing what his father was doing, and to be a Pan Azeri, and was thus forced to cooperate with them. During a meeting, he was told that those responsible for his father’s death will only be found if he accepts the cooperation. He was thereby forced by the agents to cooperate in Computer and IT related matters. Following the 2009 election and the Green Movement in Iran, and after observing what was being done to people, he decided to upload the clips taken from the event onto the internet, that is, to one of his well-known websites. This was action was perceived by the agents of the regime, upon which he gets summoned to the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tabriz, East Azerbaijan. Once he returns home from a short holiday, he gets beaten up very badly in front of their house by several members of the Basij force, following which he makes a note on his website describing the event. The next day, he gets arrested and blindfolded, and was taken to place that he describes as a “smelly basement”, where he was severely tortured, hit with pipes and thick sticks, sexually raped, abused, humiliated, and said that the next time he will end up dead. He is thereafter blindfolded again, and thrown out of a car in the countryside of his city, Ahar.

As a result of the aforementioned events, and various other incidents faced by Hadi, he is now suffering from severe Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), insomnia, nightmares, and is highly suicidal. He is also suffering from various physical difficulties such as constant backaches, headaches, heartburns, and is in serious need of medical investigation, hospitalisation and treatment.

21. Petition facebook to remove material that promotes rape culture

Facebook has no option to report material regarding sexual violence and does not seem to include comments in this category as qualifying under 'hate speech'. As a result, groups containing this material can flourish. (http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/You-know-shes-playing-hard-to-get-when-your-chasing-her-down-an-alleyway/227051983998683?sk=wall).

Instances of rape are rising worldwide. Available data suggests that nearly one in four women worldwide may experience sexual violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime (WHO, 2002). It is estimated that 1 in 6 American women are raped and 500,000 rapes are committed annually in S.Africa, where 37% of men admit to raping a woman. Conviction rates remain despicably low; eg. in Scotland the rape conviction rate is at 3%.

This is not a joke and it is not acceptable for facebook to liken these comments to ‘pub jokes’ or refer to them as legitimate entertainment, as they did in a recent statement. Facebook has previously removed images of women breastfeeding and from this we can only assume that they consider breasts to be more offensive than rape.

Facebook has user Terms and Conditions which are clearly being breached-but this has triggered no consequences for the perpetrators.

23. Free Iranian Journalist Mehdi Mahmoudian

Mehdi Mahmoudian is a journalist and a member of the "Association for the Defence of Political Prisoners and Human Rights in Iran." Because he had made statements to foreign media about the forgery of the 2009 president election results, and because he was one of the whistle blowers exposing the horrific and deadly conditions in Kahrizak prison, he was arrested on September 16, 2009 and sentenced to five years in prison.

He is serving his term in the infamous Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj, northwest of Teheran, which is known for its torture and inhumane conditions. Any contact with him is cut off.

He had previously written a letter to the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, alerting him to the violations of prisoners’ rights at the notorious Kahrizak prison, to which he never did receive an answer.

In his letter, he had cited many accounts of inhumane and criminal behavior with which the prison officials were treating young men so called “gangs and thugs” who were arrested on the streets and brought to Kahrizak. He had written of beatings, foul language, rape and physical, sexual and psychological tortures done to young men of 20-30 years of age. He had written about tens of prisoners who had lost their lives while in detention - about the ugly and inhumane manner in which the prosecutor of the time, was treating the families of the prisoners - about forcing the prisoners to undress and then beat one another with heavy cables – about shoving more than 40 people into small 30 sq. meter containers for weeks – about broken arms and legs, and he had written about many other atrocities that went on inside the walls of Kahrizak, in his earlier letter to the Leader.

Several months ago, Mahmoudian's second letter to the "Supreme Leader" Ayatollah Khameni, in which he described his appalling prison conditions, was made public. In it, Mahmoudian reported that "prisoners had to endure hours of exposure to the icy winter cold, while wearing only their undergarments, and were sexually abused with nightsticks." Mahmoudian spent 70 days in solitary confident and was psychologically and physically tortured. According to his relatives, his lungs have since become severely damaged and he now suffers from difficulty in breathing and epileptic seizures.

25. Life without the possibility of parole for Stephanie Lopez!

The story of Baby Brianna is a hard one, but it is the ugly reality of child abuse. Violent family members caused her death while others hid what they knew was going on.

"They raped her; they beat her," said District Attorney Susana Martinez who prosecuted the case. "She had bite marks on her face, cheek, head, arms, legs, chest, torso, everywhere.

"Literally bruised from head to toe, from the top of her head all throughout her body all the way to the big toe on her right foot."

She was beaten and raped by her own family.

"Massive bruising on the head, and then her little fingers were lacerated. Her mother Stephanie Lopez only received 27 years for the death of her own daughter! They say she is living a great life behind bars with family keeping her lots of money in her account and having a great girlfriend that she gets to be with daily! Why should she get to live any kind of life while Brianna does not have one. She will still be young when she gets out and I think she should be behind bars and have nothing for the rest of her life just like Brianna had nothing in her 5 short months of life!

26. Death Penalty for Child Sex Offenders

It is 2011 and Australia is still in the dark ages when it comes to the sentencing of criminals, in particular those who commit sex crimes against children.

In a recent trial a judge in Victoria sentenced a woman who had incestual sex with her son for and allowing her husband to repeatedly molest her daughter for five years and three months and ordered she serve two years and three months before being eligible for parole.

This message shows the Australian public as well as the rest of the world that sex offences against children are not of much concern to our judicial system.

We need to call on the PM to bring back the death penalty and harsher sentencing for sex offenders.

27. Petition Calling for Ken Clarke to be Dismissed as Justice Secretary of the UK Government

UK Justice Secretary Ken Clarke has declined to apologise after he suggest that some rapes were less serious than others, and showed almost total ignorance of UK law on 'Date Rape' in a BBC interview viewed here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13436429

During the live BBC Broadcast on Radio 5 (Wednesday 18th May), Mr Clarke gave in an interview about proposals under consultation to halve jail terms for people who plead guilty early, including rapists.

He showed complete ignorance of the legal definition of 'rape', which is completely unacceptable in a Government Minister in charge of legislation and directing sentencing policies.

Asked if he had been ordered to apologise following the row, Mr Clarke said he had not - and he had not apologised: "I apologise if an impression has been given which is not my view and which I don't think I stated."

28. Dismiss UK Justice Secretary, Kenneth Clarke

On Wednesday 18th May 2011, Kenneth Clarke, the current UK Justice Secretary, remarking on sentencing for rape offenders in a radio show appearance on the BBC5 Live call-in show, voiced his opinion of the distinction between date rape and “serious” rape, which he defines as “forcible”, involving “violence and an unwilling woman”.

"A serious rape, with violence and an unwilling woman, the tariff is much longer than that. I don't think many judges give five years for a forcible rape frankly."

He has shown no remorse for his remarks, suggesting that the mass public outrage at his disgraceful comments is misinformed and self-indulgent.

"People are slightly spinning, loading what I said in order to get what I regard as false indignation.”

The Guardian also reported that he believes campaigners around discounts for early guilty pleas (for all offenses) target rape in particular because it adds "sexual excitement" to into the argument.

Rape is, by definition, always non-consensual – i.e. forced – whether that is by physical violence or coercion. And rape is always sexual violence.

30. RHUL must support Iman al-Obeidi

Dear RHUL Management,

I am sure you are aware of the recent case of Iman al-Obeidi in Libya. Ms al-Obeidi rushed into a hotel full of western journalists to tell them that she had just been gang-raped by troops loyal to Colonel Gaddafi.

Despite being clearly distraught and showing the journalists bruises on her legs, she was tackled and dragged away by hotel staff and government minders.
