31. BBC News Cheshire

July 26, 2006

Cheshire is the only county in England that does not have its own dedicated news page on the BBC.

Surfers seeking news from Chester, Nantwich, Wilmslow, Vale Royal, Macclesfield, Crewe, Congleton etc, are forced to search for local news on the news pages for Merseyside, Manchester and Staffordshire.

Even then, coverage is very sparse, compared to news reporting from the major towns in the adjoining regions. Cheshire is a very large county and deserves its own coverage as much as the other English counties. Local news for local people!

Complaining individually to the BBC produces one of the following responses:
- we don't know why there is there no Cheshire coverage, we'll look into it.
- please look on the news pages for adjacent counties.
- it's not viable.

Why is it not viable? We are licence payers - we deserve equality of coverage. The BBC's attitude is disgraceful at best.

The BBC website also does not provide coverage for Cheshire regarding non-news, such as its "What's On" pages - typing in your postcode directs you to the nearest major town in an adjacent county.

Furthermore, there is no BBC Cheshire radio station and searching the BBC website for information on Cheshire weather displays weather maps for Liverpool to Glasgow, North Wales or Staffordshire, none of which show any Cheshire towns.

For the latest updates on the campaign, we invite you to read the campaign blog at http://newsforcheshire.blogspot.com/

33. Abolish Assesment Feedback Boycott at UWE

April 6, 2006

For those of you who are not aware, certain lecturers within UWE are currently on a feedback boycott; meaning they are willing to mark work but they are not willing to provide students with their marks or any appropriate feedback in a formal manner.

For those of you about to graduate this could mean that you do not receive formal classification of your degree. For those of you in your first and second year this could mean that progression onto your next year, any masters application and even module choice options could be hindered.

The action is being carried out because certain union members feel their pay should be higher and they feel the best way to achieve this rise is to carry out the above mentioned action.

I am not against strike action but I am against students being used as pawns in pay dispute claims; if you would like to see this action ended and if you would like to receive feedback and module grades please sign this petition.

34. Alternative Bread Rolls at Subway

This petition is for all those people who would be able to enjoy Subway if they were not allergic to the wheat and yeast in the rolls.

We would like Subway to provide an alternative roll which is both wheat and yeast free. Considering the increasing numbers of people suffering from food allergies such an alternative would be good for both consumers and Subway.

35. Tiger

TO: The Honourable Dr. Philippe Couillard, Quebec Minister of Health Services and Social Services

TO: Madame Nicole Malo, Public Curator

cc. The Honourable Mme Carole Théberge, Quebec Minister of Family, Seniors and the Status of Women

We, the undersigned, believe that the rights of the intellectually disabled young man, presently under tutorship of the Quebec public curator, and known by the alias of "Tiger" [documentation with his real identity already in possession of your office] have been and continue to be violated by establishments mandated under the Act respecting health services and social services to provide him with adequate care.

We believe that he has been, throughout his life, deprived of specific rights granted to all citizens and to which he was and is entitled under Quebec, Canadian and international law. Attached are specific rights, which we believe that Tiger was and is entitled to and has not been granted via the following:
* United Nations, Convention on the Rights of the Child, ratified by Canada in 1991
* United Nations, Rules for the Protection of Juveniles Deprived of their Liberty, (1990),
* Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms;
* Quebec Charter Of Human Rights And Freedoms;
* Quebec, Youth Protection Act ;
* Quebec, Civil Code
* Quebec, An Act respecting health services and social services;
* Quebec, Public Curator Act;

We believe most notably that he has and continues to be deprived of the "personalised services" to which he has always been entitled to by the following article contained in the AHSSS:
"5. Every person is entitled to receive, with continuity and in a personalized manner, health services and social services which are scientifically, humanly and socially appropriate."

Fundamentally, we believe that not only has Tiger been deprived of his rights as stated above, but also that he has been mistreated, misdiagnosed, misplaced, neglected, abused, punished and persecuted all under the guise of "care" aimed at meeting his needs and interests.

Given that the Quebec Human Rights commission ruled in the year 2000, that Tiger's rights and specifically those related to his right to health, social and educational services granted under article 8 of the Youth Protection Act were violated and given that adequate measures have not been taken since this date to remedy his situation, we therefore request the following:

* There be an immediate stop to all forms of punitive behaviour toward Tiger;
* The Ministry conduct a complete and transparent investigation into the health services and social services that Tiger has received from the age of 2, when he first came to the attention of social services, to the present;
* The Ministry in conjunction with the Public Curator provide a full guarantee, as of now, that Tiger will receive services of the highest professional calibre, to be treated at all times with dignity and with respect for his rights;
* the Ministry in conjunction with the Public Curator actively work to remove all prejudice and bias which has been created as a result of the mismanagement of Tiger and his situation;
* Given the multitude of social and health services which have been involved in depriving Tiger of adequate services, the Ministry itself assume the full responsibility for the development and implementation of a comprehensive and long term plan. That Tiger, a representative from the Public Curator's office and person(s) selected by Tiger to assist him, participate in the development of such plan. This plan must of necessity include resources that would ensure Tiger's ongoing positive development, social adjustment and his becoming a fully contributing member of our society;
* An independent body be mandated to provide an assessment to determine how much, if any, financial compensation Tiger should receive in view of the serious negligence and harm that he has suffered by the health and social services establishments.

40. STOP H.R. 1528 !

WHAT'S WRONG WITH H.R. 1528?

Among other things, it:

- Makes the federal sentencing guidelines a system of mandatory minimum sentences through a "Booker-fix" provision.
- Creates new mandatory minimums that further erode judicial discretion.
- Eliminates the safety valve for low-level drug offenders.
- Makes virtually every drug crime committed in urban areas subject to "drug free zone" penalties that carries a five-year mandatory minimum sentence.
- Punishes defendants for the "relevant conduct" of co-conspirators that occurred BEFORE the defendant joined the conspiracy.

As written, H.R. 1528 would:

- Effectively make the federal sentencing guidelines a system of mandatory minimum sentences through a "Booker-fix" provision. This provision forbids judges from departing below the guideline sentence in all but a few cases.

- Make the sale of any quantity of any controlled substance (including anything greater than five grams of marijuana) by a person older than 21 to a person younger than 18 subject to a ten-year federal mandatory minimum sentence.

-Create a new three-year mandatory minimum for parents who witness or learn about drug trafficking activities, targeting or even near their children, if they do not report it to law enforcement authorities within 24 hours and do not provide full assistance investigating, apprehending, and prosecuting the offender.

-Create a new 10-year mandatory minimum sentence for any parent committing a drug trafficking crime in or near the presence of their minor child.

- Mandate life in prison for persons 21 years or older convicted a second time of distributing drugs to a person under 18 or convicted a first time after a felony drug conviction has become final.

- Increase to five years the federal mandatory minimum sentence for the sale of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, college, public library, drug treatment facility (or any place where drug treatment, including classes, are held), or private or public daycare facilities - in short, almost anywhere in cities across the U.S.

- Eliminate the federal "safety valve," granting it only when the government certifies that the defendant pled guilty to the most serious readily provable offense (the one that carries the longest sentence), and has "done everything possible to assist substantially in the investigation and prosecution of another person," and would prohibit the federal "safety-valve" in cases where drugs were distributed or possessed near a person under 18, where the defendant delayed his or her efforts to provide substantial assistance to the government, or provided false, misleading or incomplete information.

For these reasons, FAMM opposes H.R. 1528.

42. Regulate Underage Internet Gambling

We have all heard about the growing number of gamblers over these past few years. This is largely due to the growing trend in internet gambling. However, if it is illegal for anyone under 21 to gamble, why are teenagers being able to sign up, open an account, and play online for real money? However, there are some sites out there with software that can detect a real person's age, so why don't they ALL implenment this software? This law should be set straight across the board. There is no question that teens are at the most risk of falling into the habit of internet gambling. Let's put a stop to this before it gets worse!

The government today is looking to prohibit all internet gambling in the U.S., however this will cause more harm than good. We saw it happen in the 1920s when alcohol was prohibited/banned. It will just drive the industry into an illegal criminal element through underground markets. So instead of banning internet gambling altogether, we should have all gambling sites licensed and regulated so that they provide a fair, honest, and reputable atmosphere.

Included in this regulation should provide all gambling sites to implement the software that can detect a real person's age.

44. Spare South Parade From The Developers

In June 2004, the Skegness Standard and the Skegness Target newspapers revealed that ELDC is consideringre-developing the south foreshore in Skegness, Lincolnshire. This would result in the loss of the Southern Boating Lake, Fairy Dell, Putting Greens, Pitch and Putt and the Crown Bowling Greens.

These facilities may not be used as much as they should, but it is felt that ELDC has neglected this traditional and tranquil part of the town. The Boating lake, with it's tiered terracing could be brought back to its ownwith the reintroduction of firework displays, and by possibly installing some sort of sound system, live performers could provide music etc from the island. The Fairy Dell holds a sentimental place in many people's hearts as they spent time there as kids playing in the pool surrounding the wonderfully ornate fountain. This is where kids can play safely away from potentially dangerous tidal conditions.

As for the Pitch and putt, not many visitors venture that far down South Parade because there is no adequate signage making it obvious that such a facility exists.

Not everybody comes to Skegness for all the thrills and spills that the continuously developing central and north foreshore provide. Many people visit for a rest, a bt of relaxation, and this is where the more genteel southern foreshore comes into it's own - there is no other part of town that offers such a refuge. If maintained well, this area could be very attractive, and a credit to Skegness.

46. Amend the Rape Shield Laws

The Rape Shield Laws should be changed because they no longer provide for a fair trial. They have made it easier to obtain convictions, but the defendant is having an increasingly hard time trying to prove his innocence.

48. End Impunity: Equal Rights for All Under the Law

In 1998, the United Nations finalized the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court. The statute guarantees a court to deal with the most atrocious criminals on the planet: those who commit war crimes and crimes against humanity. Even recent events, such as the genocide killings in Rwanda, remind us of the importance of a standard, objective Court of Law. The International Court intends to assume jurisdiction only in countries that have ratified the treaty, and only for the most monstrous crimes. The Criminal Court is potentially the most important institution for human rights in half a century.

However, the United States of America have made it clear that they will not ratify the Rome Statute. In 2002, the United States government informed the United Nations that "the United States does not intend to become a party to the treaty." In fact, they are on a diplomatic mission to create impunity agreements for its nationals from the Criminal Court. Basically, these impunity agreements would prevent any United States national from facing the Criminal Court. It is unfair to give one nationality exemption from law which should be standard all over the world. It is neither the intention of the Court, nor the writers of this petition, to take away power or basic rights from United States citizens. Simply, the court was formed to provide equality under the law and this is impossible with the existence of impunity agreements.

49. Carrollton, Texas Public Skate Park

Dear Mr. Mayor and Council Members:

It has become apparent that there is NO WHERE in Carrollton for kids to skate. It is presently illegal for skaters to use any public or private side walk or hand rail.

In-line skating and skate boarding are legitimate sports and provide adolescent boys and girls with a fun, harmless and focused activity, in much the same way that baseball and football do. Skating also keeps them from other, not so positive, activities.

Since Carrollton is able to provide more than adequate facilities for baseball, football, tennis, golf, swimming and soccer, why have we not addressed facilities for this growing population of skaters? A place for them to skate would keep them from breaking laws, eliminate man power to police public areas, stop grinding on hand rails and stop waxing curbs, which are all the reasons they are not permitted to use public property now.

We, the residents signed below, request that an OUTDOOR PUBLIC SKATE PARK be built to accommodate in-line skating, skate boarding, grinding and ramp jumping.

58. End Procter & Gamble's Cruel Animal Testing

In P&G's cosmetic & household product testing, caustic chemicals are forced into rabbits' eyes & applied to their raw, shaved skin. Laboratory workers lock the rabbits in restraining devices so they are unable to move while chemicals burn into their eyes & skin.

The rabbits are given no sedatives or pain killers to ease their suffering. They sometimes break their necks & backs in a desperate struggle to get away.

Those who survive are used again ... until they are finally killed.

P&G's innocent victims include rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, & ferrets.
Even thought these tests are not required by law.

P&G insists on continuing this torture.

P&G claims to be a world leader in researching humane testing methods.

But the reality is that P&G spends more money in seven days on advertising than it has spent in 11 years on alternatives to painful & lethal animal tests.

These cruel & unnecessary experiments are paid for with profits from the sales of P&G products.

Every bottle of Pantene or Dawn,
every tube of Crest, every packet of Tampax tampons, every box of Tide, Bounce or Bold, every roll of Bounty,
& every can of IAMS or Eukanuba that is purchased means more money for painful experiments.

We think you would agree-- going without P&G products is a small price to pay to end animal suffering.

Fortunately, there are many safe, effective & humane alternatives to P&G's Tide of Torture.

Hundreds of companies develop, manufacture & sell safe consumer products without animal testing.
They use newer, more effective methods such as human cell cultures, chemical tests & computer models or simply use the thousands of ingredients that have been in use for years.

Million of Americans choose to purchase their consumer products from companies that do not harm or kill animals.

By buying cruelty-free, you support the growing trend toward kinder & more effective saftey testing. You send a message to P&G that when they hurt animals, they hurt their profits.
Your purchasing decisions make a difference!

P&G says animal tests provide product saftey.

Physicians disagree.

"As an emergency room physician who has treated poisoning & exposures to dangerous products, I disagree with the contention that animal tests are necessary to determine the safety of cosmetic & household products.

Animal tests does not protect consumers from unsafe products. In my 15 years as an emergency room physician, I have never found the results of an animal test to be of any benefit in guiding the treatment of patients who have been poisoned.

Animal tests provide only the illusion of safety, because of the significant anatomical & physiological difference between animals & humans.

I call upon Procter & Gamble to join the ever-growing list of responsible companies that have declared an immediate moratorium on animal-based product testing."
