1. Justice For Animals

There has always been love for animals. When I learned about what little consequences there were for animal abuse and neglect, I decided that it was best to take action. Most animal neglect cases are only misdemeanors and people rarely see an institution or pay a high price for their crimes.

Animal abuse, abandonment, and lack of help are too common in our world, and this will help assist those who cannot help themselves. Most people who have pets know that they are wonderful companions, and that they will continue to be as long as they are cared for. Additionally, many people do not think about how unfortunate it is when an animal does not have a home. Immanuel Kant once said, "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men... We can judge the heart of a man by his dealings with animals." Anyone who would harm or neglect an animal most likely would harm or neglect a human too. A way to help prevent this would be stricter laws against anyone who abuses or neglects an animal. Help to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

2. Stop Sodexo's Bad Practices at the University of Lethbridge

During the month of March a survey was conducted at the University of Lethbridge.

What Does the University of Lethbridge Community Think of Sodexo Food?

The objective of this survey was to receive an empirical answer to the question of what the University of Lethbridge (UofL) community think of Sodexo food services on campus. This survey was commissioned by the Service Employee’s International Union (S.E.I.U) after consultation with the University of Lethbridge Students Union (ULSU) and the Lethbridge Public Interest Research Group (LPIRG). If the answer was found to be a negative one then a second action-research projected would attempt to get better food service on campus.

Initially the goal was to collect 400 responses but with the survey approaching 250 a very clear trend had emerged and we decided we had enough data. With 244 surveys returned there was a very high (95.1%) completion rate.

The University of Lethbridge has a population of over 10000 including 8200 undergraduates and the survey has a 95% confidence rating that the results are accurate within 6points.

The clearest message from both the quantitative and qualitative data is that the price of food is too high for the quality received. 70% picked the worst category on the price of food in the quantitative section and in the qualitative section over 150 wrote that the food was too expensive.

Another significant statistical response was overall satisfaction with 48.5% rating it as “poor”. The comments section revealed a significant number are unhappy with the exclusivity contract, the mandatory residence meal plan, greasy food, the lack of healthy food and vegetarian options and choices for those on restricted diets.

Perhaps most significant though was that eight students reported getting food poisoning after eating at Sodexo establishments at the UofL. The results of this survey provide a very clear mandate for changes to food services at the University of Lethbridge.

3. YES to McDonald's Ocean Dr Port Macquarie

Amongst our Port management team we have 300 years of McDonald’s experience. Our people are at the heart of our business and as a nationally accredited training organisation we strive to provide all of our people with the flexibility they require at different life stages, as well as training and skills that will serve them well wherever their future decisions take them.

We do, however, take the issue seriously. Since the early 2000s McDonald’s has not only looked to provide choice - including healthier options - but to improve the nutritional value of all menu items. Examples include a change to low sugar (less than 5%) buns in 2004 and the change to a vegetable oil blend in 2004 which removed 9000 tonnes of saturated fat from the food industry. The subsequent move to a next generation canola oil blend removed more than 415 tonnes of trans fat from the Australian food supply.

Stripping away the misconceptions, we are a family restaurant that provides food and non-alcoholic beverages in a safe and comfortable environment.

As part of our development application to council planning experts, we have included independent traffic and acoustic reports which we encourage those in the community who have concerns about these issues to view.

A litter free environment is something we’re passionate about and we take every opportunity to remind our customers of the need to dispose of their litter thoughtfully. We also have a Litter Patrol Program in place which is a structured, regular task for our crew, and involves them picking up all litter from the restaurant grounds and its vicinity.

We fully intend to remain an engaged and proactive neighbour, and hope to receive your continued support moving forward.

7. Change City Of Orillia Dog Licensing Registration Fee

The City Of Orillia Needs To Change It's Dog Licence By-Law. The By-Law states that all dog owners in the City of Orillia must purchase a licence at The cost of $50.00, but between January 1 to May 31 of each year, the fee is $30, or if the dog has been spayed or neutered it is then $20. The licence is valid until December 31 of every year.

Not only does the dog owner have to pay for the Vaccinations every year, but they also have to pay for the Licence on top of that which is quite costly to the Dog owner. A one time fee should be sufficient enough to the City Of Orillia, permitting that the dog owners provide their dogs Rabies Vaccination forms to the City.

8. Give us access to Finsbury Park

In a City the size of London, the Underground system is the quickest way to get around and we are disappointed with the Mayor's decision to shelve 22 of the 45 planned step free access projects across London only committing himself to providing step-free access at 29 per cent of all stations by 2017. This is a major step back from previous plans to provide step-free access on a third of the network by 2013. As a result, many disabled passengers, older people and parents with young children are being denied access to this mode of transport. This is particularly concerning in the run up to the 2012 Paralympics and makes us wonder how the Mayor is planning to keep his post-Beijing pledge to make London’s Games the most accessible ever.

It makes little sense that Finsbury Park, where the current 49.1m passenger journeys a year are likely to increase by 40% over the next 15 years, is not being made step-free whilst Kingsbury and Amersham, both serving less than one tenth of Finsbury Park’s passengers, are being made accessible. We believe that money would be better spend on projects in areas where a larger number of people would benefit.

The decision makes even less sense because Network is going ahead with plans to provide step-free access from the overground platforms to street level at Finsbury Park. It has now given Transport for London and the Mayor until the autumn to change their minds on working together to make Finsbury Park step-free.

These are the reasons why we (Jeremy Corbyn MP, Jennette Arnold AM, local councillors, the Islington Disability Network, Islington Mobility Forum and Transport for All) are working together to collect as many signatures to pass to the Mayor to convince him to change his mind. If you agree that Finsbury Park Underground station should be made accessible to all passengers then please sign this petition. We are aiming to hand the petition over to the Mayor in the Autumn.

Ps. Please provide your email address to ensure your signature counts!

9. Exemption for Sunrise Propane explosion victims

On August 10, 2008, a propane explosion occurred at Sunrise Propane, 54 Murray Rd, North York, Ontario, forcing 12,000 residents from their homes.

Due to extensive damage caused by the explosion, not all residents have returned home as they have to rebuild.

Residents who have elected to tear down more than 50% of their existing walls, have learned that their house rebuilding is being treated as "new construction".

This Bylaw is according to Municipal Code, Chapter 851, Water Supply and Chapter 681, Sewer Service. Residents will have to pay the City of Toronto approx $11,000 for upgrades on city property, which does not include the additional expense required to upgrade the pipes on their own property.

Glenn De Baeremaeker, Chair of Public Works & Infrastructure, denied all requests for the issue to be added as an agenda item. He stated in a letter, “I fully understand and sympathize with the situation your constituent is faced with as he rebuilds his home following last summer’s Sunrise Propane blast, there does not appear to be sufficient merit to warrant a request of City Council to exempt this property from the relevant provisions of the Municipal Code”

Several written requests have been submitted to the Mayor's office for assistance. Karen Duffy responsed from the Office of the Mayor, stating that "The Mayor's Office is satisfied that the city is responding to your request. The decision rests with the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. There will be no meeting scheduled."

A final attempt was made to add the issue to the agenda on the day of the meeting, June 3rd, and Glenn De Baremeaker made a ruling that the request would not be put to a vote and would not be heard by the committee.

Karen Duffy stated the Mayor was powerless to help, and once again said no meeting would be scheduled.

11. It's About Time

We were promised properly resourced quality nursing/midwifery services
- Public Sector nurses and midwives across metropolitan South Australia are taking action because the State Government has failed to deliver on its promise to support positive and resourced quality nursing and midwifery services.

It’s about time that these resources are delivered
- A promise was made, in February 2007, to provide more nursing and midwifery staff for direct clinical care so that other nursing and midwifery staff (including Level 2 and 3) could spend time performing activities that have an important impact on patients.
- Since this time, we have repeatedly requested that the resources be provided.
- To date, we have not been provided with a response or timeframe.

It’s the time we need to provide quality patient careThe failure to resource quality nursing/midwifery services has a negative impact on patient care. Failure to meet the promise means that less time is available for important work including:
- Quality improvement
- Infection control
- Rostering (ensuring adequate and appropriate staff on shift)
- Clinical teaching supervision / support of new staff
- Professional / knowledge development and resources
- Co-ordination management and planning.

We have exhausted all other options to make the State Government deliver
- Because we have not received a response, we are taking action so that the State Government will provide us with the resources we need to provide quality nursing/midwifery services.
- We regret that we have been forced to take action, but we are taking action because of our commitment to the community and your health needs.
- We ask for your patience and support in our campaign – this is a campaign to ensure the community gets quality nursing/midwifery services and that’s why ‘It’s About Time’.

15. Beautification Project for the Intersection at 2nd Street and Helen

Recently within the past six months there has been increased occupancy and turn-over of residents of the mobile home park at Helen and 2nd Streets.

This has resulted in a dramatic increase in socializing and loitering on the perimeter of the property and on the street during the day and through the late evening hours and the consumption of alcohol and drugs by minors.

There has also been a dramatic increase in automobile and motorcycle traffic and speeding, as well as dumping of furniture and debris on the empty lot across 2nd street.

We propose a community beautification of the properties by requiring:

1) Property owner of the mobile home park to build a fence barrier around the perimeter of the park;

2) Property owner of the empty lot to provide continued clean up and waste removal as required by the Clean Tahoe Program;

3) Neighborhood residents to provide basic landscaping along the perimeter of both properties including planting of trees, shrubs and flowers, and

4) City of Lake Tahoe to install speed bumps on Helen Avenue and 2nd Street.

16. More free unlimited car parking near Lidcombe station

Lidcombe railway station is a major junction station on the CityRail network and many people catch the train from there, mainly to travel to work or to travel to Olympic Park for an event.

In order to catch the train at Lidcombe station, many commuters choose to park their cars near the station.

There is a free public car parking lot near the station, however there are insufficient car spaces to facilitate the growing number of train commuters. In partcular, commuters who hold a full time job. This is especially indicative during weekdays when all the car spots in the all day parking areas have been taken before 8.00am.

In desperation, I have often seen cars parked illegally on the ramp or risk getting a fine by parking in the 4 hour car parking levels.

Street parking near the station is not an option because they are limited to half an hour.

Many people are choosing to travel by train, because of the high cost of fuel, the lack of car spots where they work or because of the convenience. Whatever the reason, the increase number of train commuters is resulting in an increase number of people parking near the train station. As such, Auburn Council needs to provide more free unlimited car parking. It is in the best interest of the commuters and also in the best interest of the environment. Train commuters need somewhere to park their cars near the station, so they can remain train commuters - rather than being another car commuter contributing to air pollution.

17. Deregulation of electricity and gas services in New Mexico

In deregulated markets like Texas and New York, customers have the right to choose their utility provider.
In New Mexico we do not have that right.

The right was voted on in 1997 and was set to go into effect in 2002 but before it was enacted it was repealed so that we could not take advantage of the law change. Now the local utility wants to raise our rates here in New Mexico. We have no recourse as citizens of the Great State of New Mexico.

Much like the telephone industry deregulation, we now have the right to choose who will provide our telephone service. We as citizens of New Mexico should have that same right when it comes to our utility providers. The incumbent provider should still handle all the billing, customer service and delivery just like they always have.

The only thing that should change is the charge for the energy supply. Knowledge is power only if you put it into action. Deregulation is happening all over the country. Customers are waking up to the idea they can switch their utility provider and save money! There is no time like the present to take advantage of this incredible opportunity! We should have the right to choose who provides our utility service.

We should have the right to choose for ourselves and not the State of New Mexico.

20. Support Atlantic Yards

Atlantic Yards is one of the newest projects in Brooklyn. Looming over the MTA and LIRR's Vanderbuilt rail yards, it is one of the most constructive projects to be done this decade according to atlantic yard.com.

The project of Atlantic Yards' surrounding perimeter is Flatbush avenue, Pacific street, Dean Street, and Vanderbuilt avenue. Which is in the area of Downtown Brooklyn . Atlantic Yards is a 4.2 billion dollar project that includes a sports and entertainment arena that will be home to the basketball team the nets, new buildings for commercial and office space, open space, and a hotel.

Atlantic Yards will solve the problems of insufficient buildings and housing. There is just not enough residential space, such as apartments in downtown Brooklyn. The apartments that do exist have several setbacks such as bad plumbing and heating, broken ceilings cracked walls, and broken windows. New buildings are desperately needed. The unemployment rate is high due to a lack of bussiness in retail according to the "Brooklyn Market Review of Spring 2006", recent developments have been steadily improving Downtown Brooklyn's economy.

The Atlantic Yards project will bring a multitude of economic activity, that will provide many jobs for Downtown Brooklyn. One of the two main sources that will bring jobs into the area are the construction projects and the new NETSb arena.

The four Atlantic Yards communities are seperated by the railyards. The railyards prevents citizens from easily going from one community to the other. The Atlantic Yards project solves this problem by connecting the communities by turning most of the railyards into open- space. Atlantic yards is a project that will create more jobs, set up affordable housing and build new buildings.

The solution to downtown Brooklyn's problems is the Atlantic Yards project. The Atlantic Yards project will create 6,860 homes of mixed income. Of which 4,500 will be rental units. Half of these will be put aside for middle and low income families. This will solve the problem of high rent and lack of housing for people in the Atlantic Yards area. Due to the construction on the Atlantic Yards project new construction job oppurtunities will be available. Forest City Ratner ( an urban real estate company , the head of Atlantic Yards) has promised minority and women owned companies will be the prioritry for hire.

The Construction of Atlantic Yards will create enough jobs to last for ten years. In addition to creating new jobs, Atlantic Yards which will be built over the rail yards will connect the four existing Brooklyn Communities and provide new open space. The new development Atlantic Yards will be a great happenning. Downtown Brooklyn will look cleaner ( without any of the new Brooklyn Buildings that were cracked or broken) and more organized. Building the Nets arena will cause another subway opening , which leads directly to ten subway lines and the LIRR, which will reduce traffic. Also the Atlantic Yards project will fit in nicely with the skyline of existing communities. The economic benefits of the project are 6 billion dollars in tax revenue, new jobs, and greater oppurtunity for bussiness to thrive according to Atlantic Yards .com. Atlantic Yards, by creating millions of jobs, bringing in an arena, putting out plenty of affordable homes, and bringing in revenue will be, according to sports economist andrew Zimbalist Brooklyn's greatest " economic generator".

29. School busses for Windrose Subdivision

Klien School District will not provide bus services to Windrose and SpringBrook Subdivisionand.

In a news letter sent home with our kids on friday 08-18-06, it was stated that the school can not make the decision, They say we have to live 2 miles or more away from the school. We know the school can't make the decision, but the KISD can make the dicision to do school buses in Windrose and Springbrook and the other effected subdivision.

WE called State Representive Peggy Hamric's office (District 126) they said the state does not provide funding for busses within 2 miles radius of the school, but that the district could provide transportation, Kisd wanted to provide services for us they could. I think the district is trying to save money at our childrens expense. TC Jester is in the works for being opened all the tha thru to 2920. This is going to make TC Jester extremely busy, for everybody taking short cuts thru our neighborhoods because the major rodes around us are to conjested. Many years ago, when Benfer was opened KISD did not provide busses to the subdivision within a 2 mile radius. the home owners banned together and started a petition causing KISD to rethink there decision on bussing for Benfer, they know have bus service for there kids in less than a 2 mile redius of the school. We are now asking for the same considerations in Our neighborhoods for our kids.

There is nothing barring the district from providing busses if they chose to. We have 30 sex offenders in our zip code area, We have children who must walk down 2 major roads, one being Alvin A Klien and the other being T.C. Jester. These roads are very busy now, We get alot of traffice from Kuyendahl becouse it is so busy, they come down Alvin A Klien and cut thru Windrose for a short cut to miss traffic. There are too many children to put at risk to walk or ride bikes. Our subdivision is very spread out.

We pay taxes to our schools. We are asking for school bus service for the windrose and surrounding subdivision that will be going to the new school of Benignus in the Windrose subdivision. Thank you.

30. Stop BT Removing Radio Broadband from N.Ireland

Update: August 18, 2006

This petition is now closed. BT are attempting to improve my system by changing my method of communication to cabled, the proposals seem good, thanks to all that signed this.

August 4, 2006

In 2003 BT secured a contract to supply Broadband to 100% of homes in Northern Ireland.

Now in 2006 when they have "completed this objective" they are downgrading all customers on Radio Broadband to Satellite broadband which gives a fraction of the benefits and even the chief executive of BT Wholesale Paul Reynolds admits :
"It is not true broadband, but it will give much faster internet access to many people who could otherwise be denied".

BT has spent part of a £10 Million European Grant putting in place Radio transmitters for radio broadband and this service is now to be axed, BT must not be allowed to get away with this.

BT are charging £27 pm for this "service", which in actual terms will only allow users to Browse the internet nothing more, it will not support any of the associated benefits of Broadband internet, no voice or video calling, no email service, no remote access, and for an IT business it is a death sentence.

After building up my IT business for 12 years, I will have to cease trading due to my inability to provide the services which I was able to provide over Radio Broadband.

The Minister for Enterprise Trade and Investment Mr Pearson said :

"By the end of 2005 every household and every business in Northern Ireland, no matter how remote, will have access to broadband at the same price. Local businesses will have the level playing field they need to compete in a global economy. This vitally important contract will deliver the Government's broadband vision of a fully connected Northern Ireland. In turn it will help make Northern Ireland more competitive,

YEA LOOKS THAT WAY DOESN'T IT.

In my opinion BT are reneging on that contract and have a duty to continue supplying Radio Broadband to Northern Ireland, why should we accept an inferior service that no longer enables us to conduct business, hardly the level playing field as projected in Mr Pearsons statement.

Urgent action is required to reverse this BT decision, they are due to cease the service next week.
