1. Make women-only sessions women-only

Peckham Pulse's advertised women-only swimming sessions are NOT women-only sessions. They are staffed by male lifeguards. And they are overlooked by the mixed gym sessions.

We want swimming sessions that really are what they say they are: women-only.

It is important to have safe, women-only spaces especially for women who are rape (1 in 10 women - Home Office figures) or domestic violence (1 in 4 women - Refuge figures) survivors. Women who cannot be undressed/unveiled in front of men for religious reasons are excluded from the Peckham Pulse swimming pool. The sessions also exclude other women who choose not to be undressed in front of men.

Many women travel rather than use Peckham Pulse.

Please sign so that these women can use our local swimming pool.

**UPDATE**
Peckham Pulse is currently offering 60% cover for women-only sessions in its main swimming pool. They have recruited new female lifeguards and tell me that they will have enough female lifeguards to get 100% cover by
November.

They have so far rejected recommendations for making the wider environment that overlooks the pool also women-only during women-only sessions and/or blocking off the viewing areas using awnings or blinds.

2. Save The Albany Midwifery Practice

The Albany Midwifery Practice in Peckham, south London, has been providing safe, woman centred care for women from deeply disadvantaged backgrounds for twelve years. Peckham ranks as the fourteenth most deprived district of 354 districts in England.

The Albany has been thoroughly evaluated twice, has a far lower Caesarean section rate than King’s College Hospital (14.4% compared with 24.1%) and a far lower perinatal mortality rate (4.9/1000 compared with 11.4/1000) for Southwark Borough as a whole.

The Albany gives genuine choice to the women whom it serves about place of birth and choice of midwife at birth. National maternity policy states that all women should have such a choice by 2009.

The Albany is providing safe, woman-centred care for vulnerable women who want and depend on this care. Yet Kings is forcing the service to close down its birth service at home and to limit its continuity of care. Why are women and babies being denied safe birth in one of the few pockets of genuine woman-centred midwifery-led care in Britain?

3. Back the Cross River TRAM Boris!

The Cross River Tram is a Transport for London proposal for a tram system in London, England, to connect Camden Town to King's Cross, Peckham and Brixton.

It is planned to relieve overcrowding on the London Underground, and to improve transport in areas currently without good public transport, such as North Peckham & the Aylesbury Estate in Southwark, which would aid in the regeneration of these areas.

The scheme enjoys high levels of support, particularly in South London, where the tram is seen as vital in improving access to new jobs and training opportunities and attracting inward investment.

However, the scheme has been consistently delayed with a current completion date of 2016-2020, as opposed to an original target date of 2008.

4. Support a Cross River Tram 'Shuttle Bus' in London!

The Cross River Tram is a Transport for London proposal for a tram system in London, England, to connect Camden Town to King's Cross, Peckham and Brixton.

In November 2008 the Mayor, Boris Johnson announced he would stop work on the scheme and investigate potential alternatives. SIXTEEN Months on and residents in Peckham have heard NOTHING!

The tram was planned to relieve overcrowding on the London Underground, and to improve transport in areas currently without good public transport, such as North Peckham & the Aylesbury Estate in Southwark, which would aid in the regeneration of these areas.

It enjoys high levels of support, particularly in Peckham, where it was seen as vital in improving access to new jobs and training opportunities and attracting inward investment.

This petition calls for a new Peckham to Elephant and Castle Express Shuttle Bus to be urgently introduced to bring forward some of the potential benefits of the tram to Peckham now that its future looks uncertain.

Ken Livingstone (London Mayoral Candidate) has confirmed that he would ask Transport for London to consider this proposal if elected.

Southwark Council have also voiced their support for the idea of such a new service.

Caroline Pidgeon (London Assembly Candidate for Southwark/Lambeth) has also stated that she supports introducing such a service.

Messages of support also received from local councillors from all the major political parties!

5. Keep the South London Line link at Denmark Hill

Network Rail is consulting on the future of rail services in South London (aka the draft South London Rail Utilisation Strategy).

The consultation document states that due to the proposed Thameslink project in a few years time there will be 2 fewer platforms for trains to terminate at London Bridge (they'll be replaced with two more platforms for through trains going on to Blackfriars or Charing Cross).

Network Rail seems to have decided that this means that the South London Line (Victoria to London Bridge via Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye and Queens Road) will no longer be able to go to London Bridge and will have to be diverted - probably to become a Victoria to Lewisham or a Victoria to Catford service.

What would this mean for users of the South London Line?

- No direct trains between Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High St, Denmark Hill and London Bridge (currently 2 per hour)

- Direct trains between Peckham Rye and Queens Rd Peckham to Victoria/London Bridge reduced.

- No direct trains between Queens Road and Victoria (currently 2 per hour).
Full details can be found in the consultation document pages 145-148 by following the link in this petition.
