4. Stop Land into Trust for Cayuga Indian Nation

WHEREAS, the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) supporting the proposed fee-to-trust conveyance of certain real property owned by the Cayuga Indian Nation (CIN) and located in Cayuga and Seneca Counties in the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, the DEIS acknowledges that the property in question is on "ancestral land" and therefore net en a current reservation, thus the CIN application is being treated improperly as an "on reservation" rather than an "off-reservation" application; and

WHEREAS, the DEIS concludes erroneously that there would be no signiflcant environmental impact if the approximately 125+ subject acres owned by the CIN were taken into federal trust for the use and benefit of the CIN because it fails to address, analyze and consider mitigation of significant negative impacts that will result from such action; and

WHEREAS, taking the subject land into trust weuld render it sovereign territory and therefore exempt from lecal property taxes, special district charges and other fees, thus reducing the revenue of relevant counties, tewns, villages, and schoel, fire, water, and sewer districts; and

WHEREAS, despite the fact that the stated purpose of the CIN application is to foster activities that will result in economic growth for the Nation, the DEIS nevertheless contends incredulously that the CIN has "no plans for further development .on the properties subject te the proposed action;" and

WHEREAS, the DEIS fails to take into consideration the fact that the CIN already owns same 765 additional acres in the Counties and intends to buy mere with the intent of making future trust applications, and allegedly intends to acquire up to 64,015 such acres of ancestral land that the Nation contends would thereby become eligible for trust status;

5. Save Our Economy: Legalize Marijuana in California! Support A.B. 390

Students for Sensible Drug Policy is asking for your support of Assembly Bill 390, the Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act -- the first bill ever introduced to legalize the sale and use of marijuana in California.

As introduced, this groundbreaking proposal would raise over $1 billion in annual revenue by taxing the retail production and sale of marijuana for adults over 21 years of age.

The bill would not alter existing legislation on the use of medicinal cannabis, nor would it impose new taxes or sanctions on the medical cultivation of cannabis.

Assembly Bill 390 proposes to make California the first state in the nation to enact a rational public policy for the control and regulation of marijuana. Please show your support for this measure by contacting your California Assembly members and urging them to support the Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education Act.

9. Support President Musharraf: PLEASE don't go!

This is a petition drawn up in light of the recent events in Pakistan. It seems the opposition parties after winning the majority of seats are intent on making President Musharraf resign. Through this petition ordinary Pakistanis make an impassioned plea to President Musharraf to NOT RESIGN!

As ordinary Pakistani citizens it is heartbreaking to see that former political leaders such as Nawaz Shareef and Asif Ali Zardari back in power. It is these same people whose previous rule was characterised by intense corruption, mismanagement and dazzling incompetence. They looted and plundered the country.

Nawaz Sharif’s incompetent government and Benazir’s corruption (wife of Mr. Zardari who is popularly known in Pakistan as 'Mr. 10%') left Pakistan in a dismal state. Thus prior to Musharraf’s debut on the stage of Pakistani politics in 1999,

* The country was almost bankrupt;
* Pakistan was on the verge of being declared a “failed” and “terrorist” nation;
* It was listed as being the second most corrupt nation in the world (the first being Nigeria)
* During the time of Benazir and Sharif, the KSE 100 index was less than 1300. Now it is over 12000.
* Atrocities such as judicial killings of opponents took place shamelessly throughout Pakistan, particularly in Karachi, for which Benazir and Sharif were both primarily responsible.

During President Musharraf's rule Pakistan's economy has seen unprecedented growth. Corruption is at an all time low and large-scale development is taking place all over Pakistan, with a significant amount of construction going on in Karachi and areas of Baluchistan. Moreover, Musharraf is the only leader of Pakistan who has taken a strong stance against religious extremism.

This is a crucial stage in Pakistan's history and we need Musharraf to help us through this phase. We, the people of Pakistan are sick and tired of seeing our national wealth looted and our country mismanaged by incompetent and satanic politicians such as Zardari and Nawaz Shareef.

11. Kid Nation 2

Preceding the premier of "Kid Nation", there was several claims of child abuse/child exploitation and worries about child labor. These are preposterous.

As for child labor, the kids could leave at anytime they wished. They also had to willfully participate, because as a few of the kids had shown, if they didn't work they were not forced to do it.

Also, can anyone seriously believe a powerful network, with everything to lose, would allow children to be harmed during the filming, and not provide immediate care? It would be better then what they could get at home!

14. The Georgian president should be of the nation and for the nation

The president of Georgia was asked by his nation to start a dialogue or discussions with the parliamentary opposition regarding the date of the forthcoming parliamentary elections and some other issues related with the mishandlings of the current government, especially in the issues of human rights violations.

For 5 days thousands of people waited in front of the parliament building for the president to come up with some offer on the terms of discussions. His response came on the 6th day and it was a brutal violence against peaceful civilians. All the world has seen what has happened in the streets of Tbilisi on November 7, 2007.

Independent TV company was raided by the armed squad hiding faces under the masks and ruining and destroying the equipment and documentation of the company. The president Mikheil Saakashvili well knew about that action, but he did nothing to stop the violence.

Now he started regular interviews and long talks with some groups of people, and all his harangues are being aired on the national TV channel. But where was he some 10 days ago? Could he not speak to his nation in the open in front of the parliament building?

If he is so scared of big crowds in the open, then why couldn't he invite a group of oppositioners for some chamber talks? Or he wanted to whip the nation? Then he has no right to be the president, not even the right to be a manager in a minor company....

15. Support Musharraf: Emergency was required

People are encouraged to read through and sign as this is NOT a petition in favor of outright military rule, but one that supports the measures taken by Musharraf to eradicate corruption and place Pakistan on the right path to democracy. As Pakistanis, we must appreciate a man who has confronted corruption and created a system under which the voice of the people can be heard.

Pervez Musharraf has been the centre of a lot of criticism lately, and this petition is an attempt to show support for his vision and rule in Pakistan. We understand some actions by the current government in Pakistan are drastic and some may argue against them, but it is up to us to realize the ground realities and act responsibly in deciding who to support. Opposition parties are exploiting the mass public by using democracy as an excuse to regain power and destabilize a government that has achieved a lot in the last eight years. Religion is also being used by some in the media to incite the public, which has gone about its daily routine with no interest to come out on the streets. Objectivity amongst reporters on international broadcasts of Pakistani news is rare. This is an attempt to show that there is a large movement that supports the President. Outlined below are highlights of Musharraf’s achievements, there is a section on reasons for imposition of emergency rule as well.

POSITION ON OPPOSITION PARTIES

Nawaz Sharif’s incompetent government and Benazir’s corruption (wife of Mr. Zardari who is popularly known in Pakistan as 'Mr. 10%') left Pakistan in a dismal state. Thus prior to Musharraf’s debut on the stage of Pakistani politics in 1999,

* The country was almost bankrupt;
* Pakistan was on the verge of being declared a “failed” and “terrorist” nation;

MUSHARAF’S ACHIEVEMENTS

Under Musharraf’s regime since 1999, Pakistan has experienced tremendous growth and seen record improvement in its overall condition.

* From being #2 on the list of corrupt nations, Pakistan is now #138 – a remarkable improvement.
* Compared to being nearly bankrupt less than a decade ago, Pakistan now has reserves of close to $16 billion, and is still growing.
* Corruption has been virtually eliminated from the upper levels and significantly reduced in the lower levels.
* Musharraf actively confronted terrorism in Pakistan and employed several schemes to eradicate it from our country.
* Large-scale development is taking place all over Pakistan, with a significant amount of construction going on in Karachi and areas of Baluchistan. Previously, these areas were largely neglected, with Baluchistan left to the mercy of warlords for much of the history of Pakistan.
* Tax recovery is at an all time high.
* Pakistan’s media has flourished with Musharraf’s permittance and encouragement.
* Devolution of power- Musharraf brought the Nazim System and gave powers to the local representatives at the lowest level.
* Women's representation used to be 3.2%. Musharraf made a landmark decision and appointed 33% seats to be reserved for women in all three tiers of the local government and 17% in the national and provincial legislatures. (This also resulted in Pakistan being recognized as the country with the greatest progress in women’s representation within parliament in a comparison study of South Asian politics.)
* President Musharraf was awarded the White Ribbon Man of the Year Award 2006, in recognition of the tremendous support to the cause of women’s rights in Pakistan.
* Pakistan’s relations with India have also significantly improved. Previously, India refused to acknowledge the territory of Kashmir as a 'dispute'. As a result of Musharraf's diplomacy, Kashmir is today acknowledged as a disputed territory and both sides are working towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

These are remarkable achievements in an 8 year timeframe. This is not to say that things are perfect; much work still needs to be done. But, Pakistan, under Musharraf, has been heading towards the right direction and this momentum should continue. He has addressed the root cause of problems in the country thus building a foundation for democracy to prosper. The measures taken under this regime are an attempt to reform Pakistani society with a high emphasis on education. One cannot educate a nation overnight; it takes time and honest commitment. We cannot let corrupt politicians ruin 8 years of hard work.

wars like pollution, global warming, AIDS and hunger around the world. Did you

17. Call Taiwan's different political parties to unite against the Chinese Communist Party

Taiwan's Pan Blues and Pan Greens have been striving with each other for a time that makes Taiwanese people sick.
Taiwanese people should realize that the real threat is neither Blue nor Green, but the Communist regime across the strait.

If the Communists had never stolen the nation of China, the Nationalists would not have applied "White Terror" in Taiwan; thus, the native Taiwanese would not have been oppressed by the 1949 fleets; thus, there would not have been so much conflict between the Blues and the Greens today.

In fact, as Dr. Sun Yat-Sen suggested, Taiwan should be independent, if there had never been riots by the Communists in China, the Nationalists probably would never have occupied Taiwan, and Taiwan now would be Republic of Taiwan.
While the Greens are accusing the Blues of loving China instead of Taiwan, the real threat comes from the Communists. The Blues never set up weapons against Taiwan, the Communists do.

Since the Nationalist Party is Chinese Nationalist Party, the most ideal to finish the whole strife on Taiwan's political stage is to send the Nationalists back to China.

However, as long as the Communists are still in charge of China, the Blues cannot return to China; and Taiwan cannot join the UN as an independent nation.

18. Ottawa....a very dull city but I hope that's all about to change!

Do you live in Ottawa? Are you jealous of how powerful Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal have become? If you are then sign this petition. My goal is to put Ottawa on the map, I mean we are the Nation's capital, or did we all forget?

When it comes to the music industry I don't know where to start artist's and rock bands just seem to skip us...why??? Maybe because unlike Toronto we've only got one arena the Scotia Bank Place while in Toronto you find numerous arena's and performing centres. If you were an artist what would convince you to perform in a city like ours? These "stars'' are looking for a city with an active night-life but the last time I checked we don't have a night-life. So just what makes these few artists want to come here besides coming for their fans?? Who knows...And aren't you frustrated to have to go shopping over at Toronto because they have cheap yet nice clothes and in Ottawa it's the same old plain stuff every year and every month?. Lately Donald Trump has been building a new Trump International Hotel and Tower in Toronto (Anticipated completion is 2008). The first in Canada but why shouldn't it be in the capital? Because Toronto is where everything's at! Not that it's a bad thing Toronto is an awesome place it's been nominated as being one of the most livable places in the world. But as for Ottawa I really don't understand how our city can be this..this..BORING!The only thing keeping us from giving the title of capitalism to Toronto is the Parliament we have here.

Just to make a comparaison Toronto has the Toronto Zoo ...why don't we have a zoo? Not that I have a particuliar liking for zoo's but simple things like having zoo's distinguishes one city from another. With all the gouvernement activities going on in this city, couldnt they spare us some time and make plans to make this city a cultural city I mean you'd think with all these cultures Ottawa would represent its constant growth of diversity and try to bring some life into this city. 5 years ago if you asked me : what is the capital of Canada? I would have replied Toronto. And sadly this is what most people not only in Canada but in many other countries reply.

We must do something about this to save the Nation's capital from being forgotten.

21. Support Oil Drilling in ANWR

May 24, 2006

Energy, economy & national security go hand-in-hand. ANWR represents nation's best geologic prospects for major new onshore oil discoveries, and only the 1.5 million acre (8 percent) on the northern coast of ANWR is being considered for development.

The remaining 17.5 million acres (92 percent) of ANWR will remain permanently closed to any kind of development. If oil is discovered, less than 2,000 acres of the Coastal Plain would actually be affected - or less than half of one percent.

22. PÉTITION POUR RÉDUIRE L'UTILISATION DES SACS EN PLASTIQUE

23. Make Trade Fair: Our Human Rights Can't be traded

The time remaining befre the WTO ministerial affords the people at the grassroots level to have a say on the issues affecting their human rights and their livelihood.

The fifth World Trade Organization's Hong Kong Ministerial will take place in December 2005, where vital TRADE issues/agreements will be decided. The time prior the ministerial affords us the opportunity as the citizens to influence our WTO ministerial not to sign for issues that affects our human rights and that exacerbate the level of poverty in our country and other developing nations.

The WTO has implemented agreements that have had a negative impact on people's human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and other Human Rights instrument such as the International Covenant on Economic, Social and cultural rights e.g. The Trade Related Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) that allows the multinational companies the right to patent access to live saving drugs like ARVs (aids DRUGS) for people living with HIV/AIDS, this agreement violates the people's right to health, the Agreement on Agriculture that benefit the developed countries yet violating people in developing countries the right to food and adequate standard of living by allowing the developed nations (e.g. The US and EU) to continue subsidizing their exports flooding the domestic markets of developing nations such as South Africa and therefore resulting in job loses and poverty.

Another agreement that has had a negative effect on the livelihood of the people is the General Agreements of Trade on Service, privatizing essential human needs such as health, water, education and technology thereby increasing the level of poverty and inaccessibility to essential services.

Sign this petition and mandate of government not to sign for any agreement that will negatively affect our human rights as the citizens of the developing nation.

On the upcoming Hong Kong Ministerial the delegation will sign for the new agreement that was put forward by developed nations called the JULY FRAMEWORK, that will give more power to emerged economies to continue to bully the developing nations and to increase subsidies of imported goods in South Africa and thereby causing more job loses and poverty, making our farmers uncompetitive as a result of cheap imported goods that are less than our domestic cost of production.

SIGN FOR FAIR TRADE AND STOP TRADE LIBERALIZATION THAT BENEFIT THE RICH WHILE THE POOR SUFFER.

24. Support Taiwan's bid to UN

Update: September 1, 2007

Please sign the updated petition at the following link Online petition - Support UN Membership for Taiwan.

The TECRO Press Release promoting the new petition can be found here.

----------------------------------------------

The Republic of China (Taiwan) is a free and peace-loving state, and its democratically elected government is the only one that represents the interests and wishes of the people of Taiwan.

Taiwan is the only nation not represented in the global assembly. The United Nations' exclusion of Taiwan violates the principles and spirit of the UN Charter, in particular the fundamental principle of universality, and of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Taiwan and its 23 million people are capable of making significant contributions to many UN efforts around the globe. Taiwan is also eager to do its part to combat such international problems as regional conflict, terrorism, drug trafficking, organized crime, and environmental degradation. However, Taiwan is denied an important means of collaborating with international partners. This unnecessarily complicates the task at hand and hampers efforts to deal with such critical issues.

Moreover, as we enter the tenth anniversary of the 1996 Taiwan Strait Missile Crisis, the recent missile tests by North Korea have once again raised grave concerns throughout the international community. From this perspective, Taiwan’s allies have expanded the scope of areas with security concerns in the peace proposal to include all East Asian countries rather than just the Taiwan Strait. They stress that certain countries in the region engage in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as well as missile deployment or testing, thereby escalating regional tension and affecting world peace.

Taiwan is a democratic nation that respects human rights, freedom, and peace. Taiwan meets all the requirements of UN membership. It makes little sense that Taiwan is ignored when considering the fact that Taiwan serves as a model for freedom and democracy in the Asia-Pacific and a beacon of hope for those living under communist rule. To safeguard peace, the United Nations has to facilitate the necessary dialogue between Taiwan and the People's Republic of China.

Please support Taiwan and help it gain representation in the United Nations.

219 Curt I get disability and it took over a year to get then medicaid wouldnt cover the hospital bills more than 90 days back leaving me screwed drowning in medical bills.
218 Adrienne Smith It is hard enough to get disability and has taken me two yrs to get before a judge. Now you want to change everything that people on disabiity need. We are still people. Most of us have worked very hard in our lives, and no one asked to get sick or disabled in anyway. Some day I would hope to re-marry, however, it seems that you are forcing people to live together instead of the instiution of marriage which is sacred. We can not lose money because we want to marry and live some kind of life. Please do no go through with any kind of "taking away from the disabled people of the United States". Our goverment seems more concerned with giving money to people in other countries than taking care of the born and raised US citizians.
Adrienne Smith
217 Wendy Gantos I am a disabled attorney and cannot practice due to my disability. I had to wait 2 years for my employer to give me long term disability. During that time, I tried to get food stamps, and the process was so ridiculously long and hard, I never got them! Now if an attorney can't figure out the system, how can the rest of the country figure it out. I live now on disability and my bills are way more than my income every month. I can't even afford to pay my student loans. Great country, huh?
216 Ron Bones My wife is on ssi&ssd,I'm a disabled Vet with only 30% and we barely get through the month. food stamps only go so far when what you get isn't even half of what a single friend gets because she lives in a different part of the State. Tehy need to get the system worked out so that everything is equal. But I doubt we'llsee it soon. You know the old saying: SURE YOU CAN TRUST OUR GOVERMENT...JUST ASK ANY NATIVE AMERICAN!
215 Liz DeWitt Please, do not abolish social security. We need it.
214 Katherine M. Aaron Please support the disabled in this country. They already have to jump through hoops just to be approved and it certainly causes financial hardship on a family that are unecessary.
213 Joyce A Spencer People who marry they have disabilities. They end up losing some money. How in this country can they live could. When they pay more out of there checks every month.People should not have money taken away from them.Just because they marry.

April 27, 2005

The United States currently incarcerates more people than any other nation on the planet. One in thirty-two people in America has served time in prison. Yet, they continue to draft and enact legislation which can only be called "Vindictive Justice" and enables the judicial system to incarcerate even more of the citizens for even longer terms (eg., H.R. 1528 and Mandatory Minimums).

One of the last "advanced" civilizations to keep and practice the death-penalty, I think it's high time that they advertise their true colors more appropriately by amending the National Anthem to reflect the reality of the nation:

The current anthem contains the phrase: "Land of the free". This should be changed to "Land of the imprisoned".

This more approppraitely reflects the reality of the land.

28. Get USA out of IRAQ.

United States armed forces, in an effort to enforce UN resolutions regarding Saddam Hussain's Government in Iraq invaded beginning March 19, 2003. After two years of occupation and an election, US troops are still there. They should not be.

Bases for permanent occupation are being built. Tens of thousands of civilians have died as a direct result of our aggression.

29. Say No to China's 'Anti-Separation Law'

The National People's Congress (NPC) of the People's Republic of China (PRC) approved a draft of the "Anti-Separation Law" in December 2004 and will submit it to the NPC for further deliberation and passage in March, 2005. The enactment of such a law deeply concerns Taiwan, an independent and sovereign nation comprised of 23 million people.

The "Anti-Separation Law" will provide unification with the PRC as the sole option for cross-Strait relations. The law outlines what Beijing considers acts and consequences of Taiwan independence, and further promotes its "one country, two systems" stance in strict conformity with its so-called "one China" policy. At worse, the law would, in effect, legalize war against Taiwan in the eyes of Beijing.

Passage of the "Anti-Separation Law" would change the status quo unilaterally and result in serious consequences for peace and stability in the region. It ignores the political reality that Taiwan and the PRC are two independent and equal entities and disregards the desire of the Taiwan people to determine their own future. In December 2004, for example, the Mainland Affairs Council conducted a survey to Taiwan people in which 83% or respondents polled expressed opposition to the enactment of the "Anti-Separation Law."

The passage of such a law would quickly destroy what little trust there is in Beijing and erode cross-Strait relations further.

30. During Election Years, the Celebration of Washington's Birthday Should be Moved to Election Day

Voter turnout in the United States of America has long been in decline, and its time that there was a change. We, the world's leading democracy, have one of the lowest voter participation rates in the world. This is what ultimately led to the formation of the bipartisan National Commission on Federal Election Reform headed by Presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford. Therefore, the need for reform is there and the creation of a Federal Election Day holiday is a viable solution.

A survey completed by the U.S. Census Bureau after the 2000 election found that of those who did not vote, a conflict with work or school was listed as the number one culprit. By moving the celebration of Washington's Birthday to Election Day, we can eliminate the usage of a schedule conflict as a possible excuse.

We, as a nation, will be able to celebrate a right made possible by Washington and his successors and honor them in the process.
