34. Diane Abbott for Prime Minister

Diane Abbot was the first black woman to be elected to the house of commons in 1987, and remained the only one for 10 years. She is known as a free-spirit with high morals and not one to 'tow the party line', with both a honest, professional and frank personality, whilst still retaining a sense of humour. Furthermore, she also has the ability to admit her mistakes and isn't afraid to answer the hard questions.

She can be seen regularly on the television program "This Week" along with Michael Portillo and Andrew Neil, on which she is a regular political commentator.

Even more appealing however, is the fact that she doesn't have a second home.

More information is available about her at:

35. It's time for a Vote of (No) Confidence in Gordon Brown

He was Chancellor of the Exchequer for ten years under the premiership of Tony Blair, since then he has been the unelected Prime Minister. There is absolutely no escaping the FACT that Gordon Brown is directly responsible for the financial mess Great Britain is in Today. Brown also supports the anti British European Union, illegal wars overseas and uncontrolled immigration.

He is responsible for bailing out fat cat bank bosses with hundreds of billions of or pounds, while turning a blind eye to their greed, while many British home owners are struggling with their mortgages in this new age of negative equity.

There is not enough room here for us to list all of the reasons why Gordon Brown should go now. This campaign group is asking you all to write to your MP's. Write to them and demand that they call for a confidence vote in the House of Commons against this unelected despot Gordon Brown.

36. Stop Bill 80's Amendments to the — Construction Industry Labour Relations Act

On March 10, 2009 the Saskatchewan Party Government Minister of Advanced Education, Employment and Labour Rob Norris tabled amendments to the Construction Industry Labour Relations Act.

“Assistant Deputy Minister Mike Carr confirmed in a stakeholder briefing that the construction and other unions in Saskatchewan did not ask for this and that none were consulted prior to its introduction. The government says it’s about so-called freedom of
choice for employers and employees. We say it is about opening the door to certain employer-dominated unions to do wall-to-wall certifications of construction projects,”
says SFL President Larry Hubich.

Trades unions have long argued that wall-to-wall certifications, rather than the current system of certifying on a craft basis, will lead to deskilling and lower wages. The amendments also remove ‘maintenance’ from the definition of construction industry, which means a significant portion of unionized construction work will no longer be covered by the Act.

“Once again, the government is gutting legislation that affects thousands of workers without consulting them in advance. We saw this with last year’s essential services legislation and the amendments to the Trade Union Act. Now they’re doing it with the construction trades. This government is obviously intent on breaking unions in every sector,” says Hubich.

“It makes no sense to change the way in which construction workers are certified: the government’s own numbers show that despite the giant boom in construction over the past five years, that the unionization rate has remained the same. The system works for the trades union members because they are assured of a collective agreement and it works for employers, who are provided with skilled labour out of the union hiring hall.

37. Wage Concern - Save the National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage was introduced by the Labour government amid fierce opposition from the Conservatives whose then Leader, William Hague (Now Shadow Foreign Sec and de-facto Deputy Leader) branding it ‘the height of reckless irresponsibility’.

Conservative backbenchers are backing a Bill going through Parliament that would allow employers and employees to ‘opt-out’ of the minimum wage, effectively allowing - for instance - agencies to force staff to sign an opt-out contract before giving them work.

If the Bill is passed by Parliament it would fatally undermine the Minimum Wage in the middle of a recession.

The campaign is now being backed by John Prescott and is called 'Wage Concern', below is a video of John launching the campaign:

39. Improving maternity services in England

This petition came about due to my experiences having a baby with care from the NHS and my sister having a baby with care in Australia. The differences between the two are immense, my own personal experiences with midwives is awful and I am collecting accounts from people of their experiences having a baby on the NHS, if you can help me with this please email birthexperiences@live.co.uk

The changes i would like to see are:-

- more awareness of pre-natal and post-natal depression with counselling sessions freely available for all women in pregnancy and after birth.

- Consistent care during pregnancy with more adequate pre-natal classes.

- Private rooms for all mothers and their partners in labour and after labour during the hospital stay.

- Improved after-care i.e- in Australia they have the baby in a nursery for the first night and transfer you to a midwife run hotel for 4 days after an uncomplicated birth.

- More access to alternative therapies to make labour a less 'medical' ordeal.

I consulted a homeopath who prescribed caullophyllum which greatly improved my labour, i think these kind of services should be available on the NHS.

Pregnancy and Labour are a very precious time in a woman's life and i don't think women are being treated with the care and consideration they should be.

I aim to have my petition signed by as many people as possible and have as many birth experiences as possible to send to the government and highlight the issues women face when having children today, we deserve more.

41. Dignity and Respect for the Filipino Worker

There is now a significant Filipino population in the United Kingdom. Over the past twenty years, the number of Filipinos living and working in the UK has increased by more than 833% from roughly 18,000 in 1986 to more than 150,000 by 2006. Of this number, about 70% live in Greater London area.

The Filipino community works in a variety of sectors, ranging from IT, aviation, education, hospitality sector (hotels, restaurants and casinos) and healthcare, chefs, and house managers. Increasingly, Filipinos have been recruited to the UK in significant numbers. Over the past five years, thousands have been recruited for the hospitality and healthcare sectors.

Perhaps the Filipino community is best known for the contribution it makes to the healthcare sector. Filipino nurses are consistently recognized for their high standards of professionalism. In the past eight years, more than 45,000 Filipinos were recruited into the health service, most of whom are nurses serving in the National Health Service while the remainder are working in the independent healthcare sector – mostly in private nursing homes.

Equally well received are the thousands of domestic workers who are housekeepers, cleaners and nannies. They are often employed by the members of the British establishment. Young professional women entrust their children to be looked after by Filipina nannies. Filipino domestic workers are well known to be hard-working, trustworthy and responsible.

Almost all of these domestic helpers are well educated with most of them having a degree-qualification as their background. Hence their high-demand as preferred employees by various sectors of the international society living in London.

A survey conducted amongst a limited sample of Filipinos living in the UK at present yielded some interesting findings:

65% of Filipinos are nurses and/or in the allied medical fields.
More than 10% are in domestic service.
A growing number of entrepreneurs of about 5%.
10-20% of the second-generation youths has gone to university or are still finishing university courses. Some of them have also become known as 'celebrities' due to their high profiles as models, actresses or musicians.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE TO ALL?

"On 26 September 2008 at 9 p.m., BBC 1 aired the comedy series Harry and Paul starring Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse. The opening scene showed Paul seated on a chair on his front lawn, while still in his pyjamas. A young Asian-looking female was shown gyrating in front of him in a lascivious manner. The postman arrived to ask Harry, Paul's friend, what was going on. Harry told him that he is trying to see if his ‘Filipina maid' can seduce Paul who obviously looks depressed.

Harry then continued to shout instructions to the young girl and to Paul to 'hump' the Filipino maid. He remained unmoved while the girl even played with his hair. On further instructions from Harry, she continued to gyrate sexually in front of Paul. Harry then instructed the maid to 'present her rear' which she did while wiggling her bottom in a seductive manner. The maid did not succeed in seducing Paul as he got up from his chair to go to his house. Harry shouted at the girl in an angry voice to leave as she was useless in doing her job. The girl walked towards the pavement looking upset. While walking on the pavement, the postman looked at her in a leering way and followed her. After catching up with her, he was shown to be whispering in her right ear and the girl then walked off with the postman."

While the BBC series did have a warning that the contents of the show may be of an offensive nature and has been rated 16, this particular sketch is completely disgraceful, distasteful and a great example of gutter humour. The sketch reflected insensitivity on the part of the producers and the British Broadcasting Corporation who did not seem to worry that by particularly naming the girl as a 'Filipina maid' and with her employer ordering her to openly behave in a lascivious manner toward the neighbour on the front lawn of a house where the public can watch what she was doing, was tantamount to racism and worst sexual abuse and exploitation of the hapless young Filipina domestic worker employee.

42. I thought we lived in a democracy?

democracy: government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

The current Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is destroying this country and everything it stands for. He may have been a good(ish) chancellor but as PM he is out of his depth. It is time for a General Election to be called in England.

Gordon Brown was not elected to Prime Minister by the people of England. Therefore he has no right to be there if we live in a democracy.

47. We demand a Referendum on the EU Reform Treaty

In 2004, Tony Blair, the then Labour Party leader and British Prime Minister, promised the country a referendum on the EU Constitution.

He did this because the EU Constitution altered Britain’s relationship with the European Union and handed over a massive amount of power to Brussels. In 2005, the Labour Party fought and won a General Election with the referendum pledge contained in their manifesto.

Also in 2005, the EU Constitution was rejected by French and Dutch voters, ensuring the proposed constitution was scrapped.

Now, in place of the failed EU Constitution, EU leaders, including Prime Minister Gordon Brown, have signed a Reform Treaty, which is almost identical to the EU Constitution. It also involves a huge amount of powers being transferred to Brussels. However, the Labour Party has gone back on its referendum pledge of 2005 and is refusing to give the people a vote.

We, the UK Independence Party South Sefton Branch, believe that this is a disgrace and a betrayal of the British people. Therefore we are calling on Bootle’s Labour MP to follow the lead of his Labour colleagues on Merseyside, Frank Field MP and Bob Wareing MP, and support a referendum.

48. Restore the balance between Scottish and English MPs

I love Scotland, its people and many of its products (notably beef and whisky); my wife and I have enjoyed many happy stays north of the border.

However, it appears to me that the number of Scottish, especially Labour, candidates to English constituencies for Parliament is extremely high.

In Scotland, to put oneself forward as a candidate for public office, as an Englishman (or woman) is to invite ridicule and certain crushing defeat, as a result of the incredible anti-English feeling that is generated in such contests north of the border.

49. SAVE WORKERS IN THE CEMENT INDUSTRY

SUPPORT THE STRUGGLE OF CONTRACT WORKERS AGAINST EXPLOITATION

BY HOLCIM IN CHHATTISGARH

Chhattishgarh is a mineral rich state that provides perfect opportunity to produce cement at most competitive prices. Raipur- Bilaspur belt provides the best location where both man and material is available cheaply. Government of Chhattisgarh gave lots of concessions with intentions that it will help in creating employment and contribute to the welfare of the people of the state. This resulted in mushroom growth of the cement industries in the area. Ultratech, Grasim, Century, Ambuja and Lafarge have come up with huge capacities in this belt. HOLCIM a Swiss based multinational has appeared on the scene by acquiring the ACC, AMBUJA etc.

Even though the natural mineral resources are exploited by those companies at a throw away prices, land forcibly acquired from the farmers at the cost of tears, Corporate cement companies are busy playing dirty games by not even respecting the rehabilitation package, as many of those land losers have been shown the exit door.

Very recently, it has come to light that few major companies have formed a cartel, resulting in abnormal hike in cement prices. Ten major cement producing companies are already served notices to that effect by the authorities.

As if this is not enough, the cartel is now busy to systematically exploit labours by squeezing them to exploit in a unified manner, which is a very serious matter.

Even "Cement Wage Board" agreement in force in the Indian cement industry which is the result of negotiations between the All India Cement Manufacturers Association and a group of central trade unions in the cement industry, which has been ratified from time to time, is not honored.

According to this agreement, contract labour is prohibited in the entire production process in the cement industry all over India, and even in the limited areas in which it is permitted - such as the loading and unloading of raw materials, contract labour are to paid at the same wage rate as regular employees.

Holcim, Lafarge, Century, and Ultratech have formed the Chhattisgarh Cement Manufacturers Association (CCMA). This Association has challenged the very jurisdiction of the State Government to make a reference in the first place, vide a writ petition before the Hon’ble Chattishgarh High Court, challenging the notification dated 31/12/60 bringing the cement industry under the purview of the MPIR Act, after more than 45 years! It is shocking to learn that the cartel has even managed to influence the concerned Respondent officer of the Central Government to support their case. If the CCMA succeeds in its conspiracy, it will intensify the attack against the already beleaguered working class of Chhattisgarh.

We appeal to all who feel strongly about this kind of exploitative stranglehold of big corporations - particularly foreign multinationals, to support the effort of the struggling contract workers in the cement industry in Chhattisgarh. Join the campaign against Holcim, Lafarge and Ultratech by exposing their misdeeds against workers, by signing the online petition and also declare your solidarity with Pragatisheel Cement Shramik Sangh C/o Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha Office. 50. PETITION FOR AN URGENT CARE CENTRE AT KIDDERMINSTER HOSPITAL

Update: GREAT NEWS ! From 1st October 2007, a six month Pilot Scheme will provide an URGENT CARE CENTRE at Kidderminster Hospital with Consultant supervision and a Doctor - led team with Emergency Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Support as an integral part of the Minor Injury Unit. The Minor Injury Unit is open 24 hours and the Doctors will be in the Urgent Care Centre Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm from October until March 2008.
Labour fully supports this excellent new service and it becoming permanent.

----------------------------------------

Labour Government is establishing Urgent Care Centres throughout the country - 25 in February 2007, in Liverpool, London, Edinburgh, Maidstone and elsewhere.
Urgent Care Centres are not A&E Departments, but build upon services provided at Minor Injuries Units and other Walk- in-Centres.

What advantage would an Urgent Care Centre provide for patients presenting to Kidderminster Hospital?

Firstly, there is a small percentage of current patients who have to be transferred to Worcester Royal – 2%. With a Doctor and other extra medical professionals on hand, that figure could be reduced.

Secondly, about 5,000 patients a year present at Worcester Royal A&E when many should be treated at Kidderminster Minor Injuries Unit.

Thirdly, Worcester Royal is extremely busy, and an Urgent Care Centre at Kidderminster would help relieve pressure and help patients living near Kidderminster.

Therefore, I fully support the establishment of an Urgent Care Centre at Kidderminster Hospital, (including the first step of a pilot scheme this autumn entailing a Doctor being based at Kidderminster’s Minor Injuries Unit)

I urge everyone to sign my petition below for an Urgent Care Centre to be placed at Kidderminster Hospital.

51. PETITION FOR RADIOTHERAPY UNIT TO BE PROVIDED AT KIDDERMINSTER HOSPITAL

Update October 2007

Nigel says: "We now have 5,500 paper signatures.

------------------------------------------

Update August 2007

Nigel says: "We now have over 4,500 paper signatures on the petition collected at Street Stalls throughout Wyre Forest."

Please continue to sign the online Petition.

---------------------------------------------

Nigel Knowles is running a campaign and a petition to have a Radiotherapy Unit placed at Kidderminster Hospital.

Nigel says “This Radiotherapy Unit could cost £2.5 million with the obvious on-going costs of operation. Cancer patients in Wyre Forest have to travel over 20 miles to New Cross Hospital Wolverhampton for their radiotherapy treatment. That is a very difficult journey for them to make many times for their treatment.

Worcestershire Acute Hospital Trust is currently looking at the possibility of providing a Radiotherapy Unit in Worcestershire, within the Three Counties Cancer Network. Kidderminster Hospital would be a great place to have it! We have the wonderful Millbrook Suite currently providing chemotherapy treatments for cancer patients and the Radiotherapy Unit would be a great extra provision for patients.

I think with Worcester Royal and the Redditch Hospitals being so busy, Kidderminster Hospital would be the best place. There is a great tradition of community support for Kidderminster Hospital and I’m certain the Radiotherapy Unit would be greatly welcomed by the people of Wyre Forest who have endured a difficult period of time in the transition between the transfer of A&E Services and the opening of our brilliant £26 million Treatment Centre in 2004”.

52. More support from midwifes for natural births from caring, understanding midwifes

Being a mum of 2, my firstborn son was born by elective caesarean due to lack of midwifery support. He was breech from 30 weeks+ and it was left too late for an ECV (turning of the baby) to work.
It was due to this midwifes late referal that the ECV failed, and the caesarean was pushed upon me.

There should be more support for women to labour naturally, even if caesarean is needed the woman should at least go into labour first. Breech births are heard of and is possible yet i was practically forced to make the caesarean choice.

53. Save North West Leicestershire Post Offices

Since 1997 Labour have overseen the closure of 4,723 post offices. North West Leicestershire has lost many village Post Offices in places such as Blackfordby, Albert Village and Coleorton. Post Office branches are vital if we are to combat both social and financial exclusion, and this Government wants to continue destroy this vital network by closing a further 3000 Post Offices.

Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for North West Leicestershire Andrew Bridgen advocates the freeing up of subpostmasters and postmistresses, to provide a greater range of products and services, as well as a scheme whereby people with concerns about a range of Government services can use their local Post Office as a kind of 'Government GP'. This can advise on issues such as tax returns, pension entitlements and the opening hours of local pharmacies.

54. Save Ben's

Situated on the downtown corner of Metcalfe and de Maisonneuve, Ben’s Delicatessen is a true Montreal institution. Founded in 1908, the restaurant could celebrate its centennial in two years. Sadly, however, Ben’s Deli is threatened with closure.

Exasperated by dangerous and degrading working conditions, the restaurant’s workers have been on strike since July 20. They are fighting for a reinvestment in the basic tools of the trade: a toaster, sufficient plates and utensils, adequate heating in winter and air conditioning in the summer. But the employer is refusing to negotiate any improvement whatever.

The employees and clientele of Ben’s Delicatessen fear we may be losing yet another element of what made Montreal a unique city.

56. Adopt Proportional Representation for General Elections in the UK

For centuries, the UK has used the first-past-the-post system to elect its MPs. This system is out-dated and promotes inequality.

The two main parties (Labour and Conservative) are over-represented and the rest are under-represented. Most importantly, there is no proportionality.

The Labour government is currently running our country with the support of a mere 35.2% of the voters. The Green party can get 15% and not win a single seat.Is this fair?

I propose a system where, if a party gets 10% of the votes it will also get 10% of the seats in Parliament. ie, a FAIR system.
