1. Stop tax on baby products in South Africa

At present VAT is charged on many products and services for babies and children under 5 in south Africa, one of very few countries doing this.
For examlple, 14% of the shelf price of infant formula, nappies (diapers), baby clothing and medicinal products like colic drops.

These goods are already almost beyond the financial reach of most of the population. The government's taxation of these products highlights its nonchalance regarding the welfare of children.

2. Promote Safe Sleep Images in Advertising

Over 4500 infants die suddenly and unexpectedly in the U.S. each year. Many of these deaths are accidental sleep deaths related to an unsafe sleep environment and are potentially preventable.

The National Institutes of Health, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and SIDS prevention organizations around the world all agree that babies should always be placed on the back to sleep. Sleeping on the stomach doubles the risk of a baby dying of SIDS.

Babies should sleep on a firm surface, such as a safety-approved crib mattress covered by a fitted sheet. Soft objects, such as pillows, quilts, sheepskins, and heavy bumpers should never be placed in the baby’s sleep area. Sleeping on soft bedding increases the risk of SIDS 5 times. When soft bedding is combined with sleep in the prone (stomach) position, the risk of SIDS increases 21 fold!

Babies should sleep close to, but separate from the parent or caregiver. Numerous studies have demonstrated the danger of infant suffocation death when an adult sleep surface is shared with the baby. Babies dying of SIDS are more than 5 times as likely to have had a sibling in the bed. A study by Kemp, et al. demonstrated a 40-fold increase risk of dying of SIDS if the baby was sleeping together with the parents.

Advertising is a very powerful tool and has the ability to effect behaviors relating to healthcare. A recent study by Joyner and Moon (Peds 124(3):e425-e431) reported that in magazines widely read by women of childbearing age, more than one-third of the pictures showed infants in an inappropriate sleep position and two-thirds demonstrated an unsafe sleep environment. Showing infants in potentially life-threatening situations sends a very dangerous message to the public. It undermines the efforts of SIDS prevention organizations by providing a false sense of security to families and reinforcing the misconception that these dangerous sleep environments are safe.

Advocacy efforts can result in positive change as evidenced by the results of campaigns to eliminate cigarette advertising targeting minors. Efforts have also been successful with the entertainment industry to promote health by not glamorizing cigarette use and promoting seatbelt use. Help us promote a consistent safe sleep message to the public by supporting this petition to ask the advertising industry to support infant sleep safety in their advertising images.

3. Changing Tables Required in Public Bathrooms

As a mom of 2 boys, I have had the experience of horrible diaper changes while in public. Many restaurants, rest stops, grocery stores and such do not have changing tables in their restrooms.

I have resorted to having to change my child on the nasty floors or counter tops, even the tale gate of my truck! It is disgusting and unsanitary and our children deserve way better. I'ts a simple solution that can help keep our kids safer and healthier!

4. Allow Group Home Child Day Care Businesses to Operate in Residential Homes

Under the current, but soon to be changed zoning ordinance, Group Home Day Care Businesses are allowed to operate with in a residential home. This service is a great asset to the local community. It allows parents to keep their children close to their home or workplace with someone they feel comfortable with at an affordable price.

This service is especially important to the local area because of the lack of options parents have to take their children to for care. The real need that is evident is space for infants. Waiting lists for local care are averaging a year or longer. The reason being if a small family daycare watches one infant they may only watch four total children. This makes it impossible to provide care for infants in a cost efficient manner. By allowing Group Daycares to operate as before, care can be provided for up to 10 children with one infant in a residential home. This will keep costs down and stop waiting lists from growing longer than what they already are.

The new zoning ordinance will now consider a Group Daycare a commercial enterprise, which will make overhead costs too great to operate in an affordable manner. Let's allow these businesses to operate as they were in the old zoning ordinance, so they can continue to provide a valued service to the local community.

7. Stop the murder of infant and baby girls in China

Little baby girls are being murdered in China and thrown out on the curbs, or streets, or in the garbage, or dumpsters. Its not illegal over there because there is a limit on the citizens to only bear two children.

The men want to carry on their name so they murder their daughters so they can have sons. They throw their murdered babies in the streets like they are pure garbage. This is disgusting. So many people that cant have babies and these little girls are being killed. You should love your biological children whether they can carry on your name or not. Its sick minded to kill an infant and toss her in the road.
