1. Do NOT Delay Hillingdon's Building Schools for the Future Programme
In 2008 the Government announced that Hillingdon secondary and special schools would be included in a £150 million programme of modernising and improving our schools and making their facilities fit for the 21st century.
A year ago the council sent out to local schools a brochure setting out their plans on how this money would be invested in improving our schools. The Council said at that time that “We will experience exciting new changes in Hillingdon schools, making them suitable for 21st century learning.” The Council told us that the plan was to start in the south of the borough and include the north of the borough as soon as possible.
The Council should have agreed its plans with the Government by now so that we can secure the funds and start the work. However, on Thursday 18th March 2010, the leader of the council informed secondary head teachers that the Council is delaying agreeing the improvement programme plans until after the election and is laying off the bulk of the staff working on the programme. In addition the national Conservative education spokesperson has said that if the local programme has not reached “financial close” by the election “then it won’t be guaranteed.”
In effect this means that the £150 million programme for our schools is now at serious risk.
The Hayes Carnival is a very well established local event that takes place in July every year, and has done so for many years, indeed it has been a popular feature of life in Hayes for over 80 years.
The Conservative Controlled Council (London Borough of Hillingdon), are now ripping the heart out of Hayes and the abolition of this community festival is just the latest attack on this part of the Borough.
Hillingdon Labour Group are therefore campaigning on behalf of the local community to Save the Hayes Carnival, and thereby abait any further errosion of local community spirit. We Therefore ask you to sign our petition and show the Council's Conservative Cabinet that they have got it wrong and need to reconsider their decision.
3. Save Cwm Pennant Mountain Centre
The Hillingdon Tories have awarded themselves HUGE pay increases. At the same time as this they have made massive cuts to many Hillingdon Services.
Cwm Pennant Mountain Centre is one of them. Cwm Pennant staff believe in the positive benefits that young people can derive from an outdoor education experience in a residential setting. For many it may be their first experience of communal living away from home.
The staff aim to provide a mixture of challenging and stimulating outdoor experiences which, together with team building and problem solving tasks, help maximise the personal and social development of all those taking part. Whilst outdoor and adventurous activities are not a panacea, they can often provide an opportunity to improve self-confidence and to attain a level of success that might not have otherwise been achieved.
With signatures and the right pressure on Hillingdon Council we are hoping to reverse their decision to close the centre.
4. Create a local disabled football club at Hillingdon
I am 14 years old and disabled, I would like to be able to be a part of a new disabled football club, closer to my home.
