5. Stop Workplace Bullying

According to the U.S. government-sponsored website
StopBullying.gov, state and local lawmakers have taken action to prevent bullying and protect children in schools. But what about beyond the schoolyard? At present, no state law directly addresses bullying in the workplace.

Workplace bullying refers to repeated, abusive actions of individuals directed toward an employee which are intended to intimidate, degrade, humiliate or undermine the employee.

Unwarranted or invalid criticism and exclusion or deliberate social isolation of the targeted employee is an example of bullying. Bullying can take place at work or more commonly nowadays through social media.

7. Workers Rights for Volunteers in NSW

PLEASE - ONLY SIGN THIS PETITION IF YOU LIVE IN NSW AUSTRALIA.

There is no law or regulation for volunteers in New South Wales to refer to for assistance when they find that they are not being treated fairly by the management of a charity or not-for-profit organisation, or if they are not able to convince management to review its staff management practices. Some organisations have appropriate grievance policies that provide for complaints to be dealt with by independent mediation and arbitration, but such policies are not compulsory

Many volunteers find that they are bullied and their rights not protected. They have no right to seek help from the Privacy Commissioner, the Ombudsman, or the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). The Department of Fair Trading has jurisdiction over many charities under the Associations Act, but can only act if there is a breach of the Act. The Department has no power to intervene if there are breaches of the Constitution, Code of Conduct or grievance policies. Some charities take advantage of this lack of government power, knowing that the Government cannot intervene. This causes many volunteer workers to end up as involuntary unemployed.

Volunteer work is still work. Workers that receive wages have options when they are unfairly treated by bosses, but volunteer workers can't do anything about their employers. We call on government to protect all those dedicated volunteer workers who give their time, energy, and money in service to others.

21% of kids have received mean or threatening e-mail or other messages.

Words hurt. And for every action there is a reaction. Having an anon option when asking a question on tumblr is just an easy way for bullies to get away with their hurtful ways. There is no need for an anon option and most of the time all it provides is hurt and humiliation.

11. Request for UK legislation to stop psychological harassment, which includes bullying and harassment in any form

If you would like to lobby the UK legislators so that a legislative change is made that deals directly with psychological harassment, please sign the petition below.

Psychological harassment includes all other forms of bullying and is not specifically covered by any existing UK legislation.

The aim of this petition is to create awareness about psychological harassment in the UK and to lobby the UK government to create new legislation that deals directly with this growing issue or to amend the existing legislation including the equality bill so it directly identifies and tackles this issue and so that UK legislation is more in line with the forward thinking legislators (on this issue) of Canada, Sweden, France and others that have tackled this issue directly.

Legislation needs to show employee's, employer's and others affected outside the workplace, what psychological harassment is and what types of behaviour is not acceptable, this will remove any ambiguity and help protect the employee's, employer's and others.

The link below to the World Health Organisation report on psychological harassment shows that this issue is on the increase in the EU and that the UK has one of the highest reported rates at 14%.

This issue will only get worse given the current economic climate.

Psychological harassment can be extremely damaging and it and should not be tolerated either in a work or non-work environment.

Creating awareness is the first step to prevention and protecting the potential targets of this type of behaviour.

12. Tougher Laws/ Legislation for Cyber Stalking, Harrassment, Abuse

Cyber Stalking, Harrassment & Abuse in addition to using the internet for bullying IS a serious crime, and is as harmful if not worse, than if it were done in-person.

The use of social networking sites to cause substantial distress, physical harm, harass & even the loss of life, has become an extreme problem over the years.

Those responsible have no deterrent as the law doesn't protect the victims & therefore their crimes go unpunished.

16. Support Human Rights and good Governance in Moldova

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, both the EU and the US have halfheartedly overlooked Moldova. A quarter of its four million citizens population is working abroad: the Moldovan Intelligence and Security Service has estimated that 600,000 to one million Moldovan citizens has emigrated, of which only about 80,000 are estimated to be in their destination country legally.

Having a high corruption rate and being the poorest country in Europe, the microscopic Eastern European state is struggling with political tensions for eighteen years, since its 1991 proclamation of independence.

The large majority of the Moldavian population feels that the country is moving in the wrong direction. The Institute for Public Policy in Moldova registered that, in March 2009, 59% of the population disagrees with the government; more than three fourths of this pool complains on key fields of the social and economical situation of the country: salaries, employment, living standards, agriculture, industry, fighting against corruption, pensions, health care. The 65% of the sample pleads for accession to the European Union.

The trend of the Corruption Perception Index increased from 2,1 in 2002 to 3,2 in 2006, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime .

These data throw light upon the protests raised against the government after the results of the elections, as well as the protests of the Moldovan opposition for vote recount instead of a second election process. The majority of the citizens democratically chose to claim their opinion and right to protest, and invite each other using social networks and free Internet based services - tools which were largely used even during the campaign of Mr. president Obama.

The involved citizens spontaneously committed themselves to speak up their suspicion of fraudulent elections and to denounce corruptive activities of the actual government. They strive for the freedom of speech, the right to be fairly represented and the trust that they will receive substantial assistance from the European Union as their guarantor of human rights.

As global and responsible citizens, not only Moldavian people found the current situation unacceptable, but even citizens of the European Union and the U.S.A. On April 16th 2009, Washington officially expresses concerns about the “mistreatment of [citizens] detained by Moldovan authorities [and on] students and journalists [who] have been intimidated by government officials” .

The majority of the protesters who gathered the second day after the parliamentary elections were younger than 30. Students and youths have been threatened by 15-year sentences if they were caught organizing further actions against the current government .

Persecution of the media and the lack of freedom of independent not-governmental information are unfortunately well-known problems among the Moldavian population. By using tools of independent press such as blogs and publishing videos on Internet, the civil society is denouncing the abuse of police officers and of the state. Media are controlled by secret services and journalists risk up to 10 years of jail for their firm desire for freedom of speech and hope for a change in Moldova.

Moldova might probably figure among the biggest failures of the European strategy concerning social security and human rights. The European Commission, the governments of Italy, Finland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the agency for development from Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration of the U.S. and the Bureau d’immigration du Québec, Canada are actively collaborating with the International Organization for Migration in order to regulate migration and development in Moldova.

According to UNECE, major European destinations for seeking new opportunities are Italy, Romania, Portugal etc; almost every Moldavian family has at least one family member that left the country .

The present political crisis and severe repression seriously increases the risk of mass emigration from the Country, and consequently amplifies the phenomena of human trafficking and sexual exploitation connected with clandestine fluxes (issue taken into account by the IOM projects in Moldova). It is an imprecation that is devastating the youth expectations and is shortcutting the future of the working population.

Moldova was classified as lowest rank under the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protections Act in 2008; the U.S. suspects the Moldovan government is involved in human trafficking.
A solid concrete intervention of the EU as guarantor for human rights is necessary to achieve the EU members’ objective for stabilizing migratory fluxes. Taking no tangible action would mean counter-trafficking goals that are not achieved due to incoherent geopolitical behavior and lack of leadership.

Moldova might probably count among the biggest failures within the European Neighborhood Policy. The ENP aims indeed “to involve a […] deepening of political co-operation”, as stated in the “EU/Moldova Action plan” . Within the EU organs, the recommendation of strengthening the civil society dimension was already emphasized, and specifically it is underlined that the civil society is vital for the overall success of the ENP and that member states and the Commission need to work together to strengthen the involvement of the civil society in the ENP.

Consequently, a non-elusive intervention of the EU as guarantor for the freedom of expression and protests raised by the civil society in Moldova is expected. It is a matter of the integrity of the ENP.

Moldova might also result in a failure of the multilateral co-operation and trans-sectoral approach of economical programmes within EU and ENP members.
As an example, the overall objective of the Kyiv Initiative 2006-2006 focuses on improving good governance and reinforcement of the role of the civil society, building trust among the different regional communities, and consolidating the shared understanding of common cultural values. The mission aims to “promote a democratic and participative society in an area of peace and prosperity through integrated policies based on the Council of Europe values.

Having the Council of Europe among its partners, it is therefore the responsibility of the EU to intervene and to liaise with the partner national authorities when the role of the civil society is so compromised and the goals to be reached are so far from being achieved.

The lack of freedom and the unhealthy level of governance, shown with evidence by the international press, by organizations such Amnesty International, and furthermore by the liberal expression of citizenship, affects the economical development of the country and will have consequences on many key economical issues (such as the implementation of Investment and Trade Policy in the Western Balkans promoted by OECD: the economic security in Eurasia; and the standardization of trade).

Dear Chief Louis Cavallo,

As a concerned resident of North Lauderdale, I am writing about the problem of racial profiling. Some officers stop motorists based solely on their race or ethnicity, thus violating their civil rights. I urge you to take action now to address this problem in our community by deciding to have your force voluntarily collect racial data at all stops of citizens.

Recently, I have been stopped by one of your officers, in fact on numerous occasions for no apparent reason. Maybe because I am an African American college student that drives a 2004 black Honda or maybe I look and fit the description of a young African American female that sells drugs in the community. Whatever the reason may be I do not appreciate being interrogated by your officers at not probable cause.

The most recent experienced happened on October 25, 2006. I was parked at my friends house, ready to exit my car, while office Perez blocked my car and began to ask me questions that were so inappropriate and uncalled for. He told me he could take me to jail for not wearing my glasses, mind you I was parked and getting ready to exit my car, when I saw him approach my window. He later asked me if the vehicle I was driving belonged to me and made smart remarks to my friend as she was getting in my car.

I find all this to be out of line. This is not the first time I had to go through this with one of your undercover officers. Their conduct is not appropriate and definitely it is not professional. I am asking that you take this matter seriously and speak to the officers in your department because the next step in this matter will be a civil law suit. I will also be forwarding this letter to the NAACP, Internal Affairs, The Police Complaint Center and the local news department. I also have a petition in progress.

Sincerely,

Stephanie St. Cloud

20. Appeal for a fair and just trial for Boping Chen

On March 9, 2006, The Jury of the Superior Court of California in Redwood City convicted my father Boping Chen of 63 counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, allegedly having molested a 10 year old girl from September 2001 to June 2004 during piano lessons. He was sentenced to 14 year in prison on June 2nd, 2006.

My father is a piano teacher who has been teaching for over 20 years, five of which was since our family moved to the United States. Allegedly, during the two years and 10 months of his teaching, he had molested this girl over 63 times during his 126 lessons over the years. However, the piano lessons are held in a living room with 2 open entrances, in which the live-in nanny and the girl’s younger sister would often cross. The nanny, who has been with the family for five years, testifies that she did not see any unusual behavior in any of the lessons. Furthermore, my father has taught over 30 other students; both students and parents of these students vouch that my father is an excellent teacher. None believe that their teacher is capable of committing such a crime.

Other testimonies place the truthfulness of the girl’s story in question. The nanny would often be unjustly accused as having stole stuff from the mother, of which all accusations were proven false. Another teacher who taught the girl Chinese testifies that the girl would scream at the teacher, throwing tantrums after refusing to correct sentences in her composition. Instead, she would furiously cross out the sentences in the notebook and toss it to the floor. Although the mother claims that her daughter was "… shy, introverted, and inarticulate...," leading to a susceptibility to molestation, these other testimonies seem to indicate that the girl is fully capable of expressing her disapproval of situations she dislikes and even lies to try to get her way.

Another factor is the fact that the girl’s piano skills benefited greatly from the lessons. In the 34 month period, the girl went from a beginner level course to a level 5 course, completing 12 music books and progressing in 3 others. If her teacher had been “continuously” molesting her for “almost every lesson” from October 2001 to June 2004 as the girl claims, how exactly would a young girl be able to process approximately 5 years worth of material without a teacher who actually teaches her? From all accounts the girl is bright, but by no means a prodigy that would be capable of such a feat. Even the girl’s account of “almost every lesson” is considered incredulous by the prosecution, who lowered the charges to half of every lesson taken, 63 out of 126.

The Juror’s reasons for convicting my father are also quite absurd. “The girl testified naturally and smoothly and believable; but the defendant was defensive… therefore, we believed he was guilty.” Because the defendant was defensive and the girl talked smoothly, the Juror’s decided that my father was guilty?

This conviction was based solely on the Juror’s emotions which were turned by the story of the “victim,” rather than by the testimonies of the trial; that my father is a good teacher with lots of people vouching for his credibility and it would be unfair to convict him based solely on the testimony of a little girl rather than by hard evidence.
