2. Reshape the World to Improve our Lives
This petition for us all helping each other out on things. Let's have confidence in signing this petition and be confident on this petition. This petition is in need of confidence. Politicians don't completely have the power to change those things but this petition is to go to all those around the world that do. This petition could also go to state politicians.
This petition is mostly so much affecting us. The economy was in the worst shape in the great depression in world history and this petition is also on the economic recovery. If it has recovered before after the great depression it should again. This is almost anything to take action for and anyone to send the letters for reshaping the world. I send this to Americans as well as we need to take responsibility for our own actions .This petition is supposed to go to people that can do things about those situations and in control of all that stuff that this petition is about so it's not just to politicians. There is American greed as well as corporate greed in the world and that's part of the problem with the economic downfall. This is mostly on the economy in bad shape. It's not just oil companies greedy that affect us. We know from the bad economy allot of work hours get cut or businesses cut short on employees. Let's even take action to get the unemployment rate to the lowest we can get. It's also that budget cuts are said to be bad for the economy but the economic crisis and financial crisis world wide appears to trigger budget cuts to become common. We have had the global financial crisis as well in those past years. This petition is to take action for reshape from that as well. Part of it was that the economy was discovered to be in bad shape. This petition is also for taking action on recession.
There have been college prices ridiculous as well and having to raise prices of things because of high gas prices as of 2008. That's ridiculous. Colleges might not be greedy but many things are having prices even too high. Part of signing this petition is for helping the poor in the world. Maybe even fares and tolls are ridiculous. Part of this petition is on tax cuts along with taking action on property taxes ridiculous. As of again this petition goes to all the people in control of that as of the target of this petition being to Americans but could be forwarded to people all over the world. This petition goes to all people around the world in control of the prices of gas and oil as well. This is to all those in control of those prices all over the world.
There are other businesses greedy. There must be other things than greed in businesses or ridiculous prices of things upsetting the economy. There had to be budget cuts and there are hours of workers being cut along with maybe salaries. Even businesses having to cut short on employees. There had to even be budget cuts. Cuts on things were getting common in 2007. There was the global financial crisis in 2007 as this petition is also for taking action on that. There might as well be cuts on businesses doing business in the recession. We know that businesses lost business to high gas prices, the economic issues and even anything else affecting us with even businesses gone out of business. Even education cut backs from the economy crisis got common.
This is a bit about undoing so much damage that the Bush/Cheney administration had done just. There has been allot of blaming the Bush/Cheney administration for the economy out of shape and high gas prices as George W. Bush was in oil businesses.
We want to have this petition to the people in control of things. Part of the problem on the economy crisis is that prices of things are too high and it's not good for business as it could chase away customers. So much greed and stupidity in the world to how the economy is in bad shape. This is the reason is goes to Americans. It's like the people in control of the situations like even car insurance as well. This petition is also to go to those in control of the prices of gas. Maybe as long as cars run on gas there could be more support on fuel efficient cars and cars running on the better alternatives than gas. There should even be airplanes, helicopters, boats, truck and buses fuel efficient along with other motor vehicles. Maybe even all those other motor vehicles along with cars have the better energy sources than gas. This is even about getting the prices of gas to the lowest they can get to or anything on the lowest the prices can be.
There are waiting lists on things. It's not just to get lessons to drive cars or commercial vehicles but issues with joining emergency services and the unemployment rate is at the highest. The job issues and issues with joining emergency services are more important than issues with driving schools. This could happen in highly populated areas that driving schools for cars have too many on the waiting lists to get everyone on waiting lists. Not all driving schools in the world have waiting lists but so many private driving schools have long waiting lists. There have been enrollments affected by the bad economy as driving schools can't accept enrollments usually. Most people in the world use common sense as first time driver's license applicants with learner's permits learning to drive use driving schools and driving schools easily get affected by economic issues. It's common sense or many of us use common sense as first time driver's license applicants with learner's permits to have behind the wheel with a driving school for being safer to learn to drive and car insurance reductions. It’s not just the behind the wheel lessons that are on waiting lists of driving schools as we believe. There could be almost anything on waiting lists for driving schools. Also there should be more people to get qualified to train people with special needs to drive and all driving schools in the world should cater special needs and they’ll get more businesses. There is the Americans with Disabilities Act and laws against discrimination. This petition goes to all those who can do something about this.
Let's take action to improve our lives when signing this petition. You others could share this with people you know to get them to sign if they can. You people should comment on petition signatures what you are taking action for or just leave comments on the signatures to this petition. This could fit in more signatures whether or not those petitions reached their signature goals.
There are oil companies greedy and selfish and we consider it price gouging and profiteering. Also this is to help in putting things back together in the economic recovery as we are all affected in different ways by the economy out of shape. This petition is even on sharing thoughts and concerns with politicians.
This petition isn't all about undoing damage of the Bush/Cheney administration. This petition is mostly about the economy. This could take years for the economy recovery as this petition is mostly on the economy. It's longer then thought on the economy in bad shape. There are other things than ridiculous prices of things to upset economy. We know that there have been banking issues and stock market crashes. Things even go rare in the economic crash. This could even take years of our lives to recover from years of the economy in bad shape. This petition is under politics since there are politicians to send this too. It's not all on politics. It would be helpful to put comments in signatures and what you are taking action for when signing this petition. This petition is being linked with petitions that are what this petition is about so only 1,000 signatures are needed and could get more signatures if the goal is reached and should still be opened after reaching 1,000 signatures on it. There are people with certain jobs to not share this petition with and you others could share this petition with people you know to get signatures on it. This is also for help putting back together things from the economy crisis that's longer than we thought.
This could happen anywhere being affected by the economic downfall. This is on any of the situations affecting us in the past years of when this petition was created. This petition is also from on an economic recovery we could also take action to put things back together from the economic downfall. This petition could take time for success.
It's better to use initials or don't display name for safety when signing the petitions. You could share this with other people you know as long as they could go on this site.
Those are people with jobs related to this petition that shouldn't sign it and you people could share this petition with people who could sign it. The jobs where to not sign this petition if you don't have to stay off of petitions sites are gas stations, oil companies (they are targets of this petition), colleges or car insurance.
Signing this petition and even much signatures might as well be helping faster or as fast as we can in fixing things like reshaping the economy and putting things back together from the economic downfall.
It's happened before after the great depression so it should happen again and not come true as a prophecy of the 1987 movie the Running Man based on a book starring Arnold Schwarzenegger that Jesse "The Body" Ventura was also in as by 2017 in the story the world economy collapsed.
This petition is to go into any of who's in control of what around the world.
3. Request to G20 for regulating the financial markets
Credit ratings are normally assigned by private Agencies on demand of the issuers. However, when the issuers and investors are very Big (for instance States) the rating Agencies play a role too big for their capacity to remain impartial. The values of such ratings has been widely questioned after the 2008 financial crisis.
Let’s read a few rows in Wikipedia : if an Agency cuts the rating of bonds issued by a State indebted on long term, this gives rise on short term to an increase of the interest applied to the bonds, that is an increase of the State financial burden. The issuer might be compelled to sell off his real estates or goods to reduce declassifying .
This is just what we saw in the last days of April 2010. After an exhausting negotiation, the Euro Countries went (April 26) on approval, together with the IMF, of a credit to Greece amounting to 45 billion Euro per year (110 billions over 3 years) at acceptable interest, in connection with an adequate commitment of the Greek government.
The day after, Standard & Poor’s declassified the Greek bonds to BB+ (Junk bonds), so these were sold in the Stock Exchanges at an interest rate not less than 10%. The greek government protested with the Agency, but it was too late.
Some days after, a new declassifying operation was repeated on bonds of Spain and Portugal. Successively Moody's recalled that also Italy and United Kingdom show public debts and annual deficits too high respect the EU standards.
After the losses suffered by the Greek bonds, some economists observed that the credit needed by Greece to avoid default will amount to about 70 billion Euro per year. This means that Greece will give back not only the 45 billions, but also other 25 billions to some creditors which speculated, thanks to a suspect rating, on a financial operation between two parties. In other words, the system of free market “regulated” by private rating agencies presents an extra cost which compels the indebted countries to return much more than the original debt.
The question arising from these facts is the same that troubled the governments during the 2008 financial crisis: Why some private Agencies have the power to trigger the financial default of the bank’s system and even of the States ?
This power is unacceptable because only the States have the democratic power to take decisions about politics and macro-economics. A solution has been immediately foreseen by EU governments through the institution of an European rating Agency. A collateral action to avoid conflict of interest between private operators, has been made by the US Senate which on May 14 established that in the emission of derivative products the choice of the rating agency pertains to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). However much work needs to be done in regulating the global financial market.
Let’s remember that two years ago many industrialised countries discovered that a great financial bubble (a US Court is just inquiring about its origin) triggered the default of banks, followed by a general economic recession centered in the G20 area.
4. Creating A New World Where All Children Can Thrive
Join us as we establish a New World System, that truly project the real meaning of "democracy" in the world, where every child have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of the ethnic or economic background, geographical location, gender or sexual orientation.
A world that is inclusive of elders and youth being protected by proper health systems, care of individuals in all communities around the world, the care of our land and animal kingdom, that is for the enjoyment of "all people".
The present world structure has been established through fundamentalist religion, Judaism (Jewish male dominated rulership), Christianity (European male dominated rulership) and Islam (Arab/Middle Eastern male dominated rulership), that perpetuate the so called "Superior Culture" that rules the world, and is in the contest of winning the leadership based on "material gain" called "capitalism" in the form of natural resources, i.e., oil, gold, diamond, etc., and human slavery for profit and to win a game by "brut force, through war".
A system that continues to perpetuate denial of human rights of women and children, creating abusive situations, regardless of ethnicity, through rampant sexual assault (a number one tool used in war, to defeat the so called "enemy", the so called "other"), unjust child labor, majority of women in the role of sub servitude at the mercy of the "male dominated" society across the world, inclusive of the so called "Free world", "America" through Fundamentalist Religionists, Right and Left winged politics and the power through the monetary system created as a tool in dividing the world in different so called "classes, i.e., 1st class, second class, third class citizens". In God's kingdom there is only "one class of citizenship" those who all are living an abundant life, based on the Promise of the Universal System we find in such wisdom teachings as Genesis 1 in the Holy Scripture, promised to all inhabitants.
Our petition is to advocate a New World Order through a "Heart centered" Universal System, that is inclusive of all spiritual disciplines that advocate and promote the true equality of all of humanity based on the one ruling principle, "that all of humanity is created in the image and likeness of God" (whatever we may call this image), that every human being is a part of the whole, and deserve justice and liberty based on the factor that everyone on earth is worthy to be on the planet and it is enough provided for us all when we have a "heart centered" focus. Through a "heart-centered" social order, we are aware that the Creator, created all of us in the image and likeness of this Holy Order, and everything created is GOOD!
We believe this same message is also backed up in the Egyptian Kemetic Philosophical teachings, Judaism, Hinduism, etc., all are part of this Spiritual Universe, and regardless of what Spiritual disciplines are practiced, all participants are promised the fruits from the Tree of Life, just because EVERY SOUL on EARTH is part of the Universal Source.

Since 1998 there have been over two million orphaned children, over seven hundred thousand women and children rape survivors and almost six million murdered from war related conflict and according to the latest estimates fifteen hundred people die each day making this one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world.
Foreign companies are profiting from unregulated mining and selling of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s (DRC) vast mineral deposits such as diamonds, gold, copper, cobalt and coltan. Congo holds 80 percent of the world’s reserves of coltan, a heat-resistant mineral ore widely used in cellular phones, laptop computers, video games, jet engines, rockets, cutting tools, camera lenses, x-ray film, ink jet printers, hearing aids and many other electronic devises. The DRC is the richest country in the world with the poorest people. Foreign multi-national corporations have benefited tremendously from the exploitation of coltan in the DRC. The coltan mined by rebels and neighboring countries ( Rwanda, Uganda & Burundi ) is sold to these foreign corporations.
This exploitation of the DRC has fueled human trafficking, rape, death and forced labor of innocent people on their own land. The rape of these women is brutal; rape victims range from one to eighty years of age. The rebel solders (rapist) insert foreign objects inside the women such as knives, staffs, and rocks. Sometimes the women are even shot inside their vaginas causing them to seek reconstructive surgery. Pregnant women are usually disemboweled and venereal diseases are rampant and sometimes boys and men are raped if not killed. Some women walk over twenty miles or up to three months just to get to a clinic and when they arrive the clinics often do not have pain pills or even a band aid and the women have to wait days or months to receive treatment.
The United States has given millions of dollars to the Rwandan and Ugandan armies in military training and arms. The United Nations reported that the following companies serve as the engine of the conflict in the DRC.” Cabot Corporation, Boston, MA; OM Group, Cleveland, Ohio; AVX, Myrtle Beach, SC; Eagle Wings Resources International, Ohio; Kemet Electronics Corporation, Greenville, SC; and Vishay Sprague, Malvern, PA. The coltan is then processed and sold to companies such as Nokia, Motorola, Compaq, Alcatel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Lucent, Ericsson and Sony for use in a wide assortment of everyday electronic products.
We the undersigned hereof state our demand that:
• The United States ceases the allocation of military aid in any form, including the distribution of armaments and military training to both countries of Rwanda and Uganda.
• Adopt policies toward Rwanda that promote security, freedom, and democracy in the Great Lakes Region particularly in both the Congo and Rwanda.
• Urge the Rwandan government to implement an inter-Rwandan dialogue and a democratic process that provides political space for opposition parties.
• Support the Extractive Industries Transparency Disclosure Act (H.R. 6066 and S. 3389) to promote policies and corporate responsibility in the fight against corruption and poverty.
• Support the International Violence against Women Act (IVAWA) (S.2279, HR.5927) which would consistently incorporate solutions for reducing violence against women into U.S. foreign assistance programs.
• Put pressure on the documented atrocities by the United Nations, United States based companies to stop buying conflict coltan and to make it a requirement to label there source of coltan.
• The United States of America became a member of the Kimberley Process, government industry and civil society initiative to stem the flow of conflict diamonds through the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).
We all cannot afford blood diamonds, but we all have access to coltan. Please let’s make a collective effort to stop these atrocities.
Thank you. www.MothersforAfrica.org
6. We strongly support Supervisor Chris Daly’s rent control amendments
Sign the Petition to Protect Tenants Rights During the Economic Crisis!
As the economic crisis worsens and unemployment is rising, tenants are finding it harder and harder to pay their rent. In San Francisco, we are organizing to help tenants afford their rents by supporting the following key amendments to the local rent control ordinance: 1) Suspend any rent increases which will cause a tenant’s rent to exceed 33% of their income; 2) Expand the rights of tenants to add roommates to help pay the rent; and 3) Limit the amount of “banked” rent increases which can be imposed in any one year. Landlords are building a strong opposition against these tenant rights proposals. We need your support. Please join our efforts and sign our on-line petition.

7. Economic Bail Out Package - Demand for Bank Reform
Banks are currently taking between 3 months to a year to answer offers for short sales. In that time buyers are withdrawing offers and in some cases the banks are actually auctioning off the properties for less than the offers they already have.
Example 1: An associate of mine submitted an offer for a short sale to Countrywide in May of 2008 for $380,000. Countrywide gave no response but the buyer waited. In February of 2009 Countrywide auctioned the house off for $300,000 even though they already had an offer for $80,000 more.
Example 2: A home owner has been trying to freeze her interest rate with Chase for the last 6 months. She has never been late and has a credit score of 780. Chase denied her rate freeze and increased the rate to 9%. The home owner is going to let her home go into foreclosure. Instead of just freezing the rate automatically, Chase is going to lose between $250,000-$350,000.
As a Realtor in Los Angeles I can only testify for what I've seen here. However, I know this is going on all over the country and the financial losses that result are paid by the tax payers and not by the banks that received the bailout. Why are the banks doing this? We gave them billions of dollars to throw away. It's not their money it's the American tax payers!
8. Economic Credit Management as a subject in all Schools
I would like to start a petition for our teenagers in High School. The petition will be about our Credit in the United States of America.
Through these hard economic times, I believe it is important for every one to know about how and why our credit effects who we are as people. I believe all students in school should be taught how to manage, not only there money, but their credit as well!
It is important for our youth to understand how credit will effect the rest our lives and the impact on our lives.
9. Bailing out People not only Banks
Government using taxpayer money to bail-out the banks is postponing an inevitable problem, and further increasing the burden of debt on the public. Giving the banks liquidity to lend more money to the public and industry is not the solution to the current financial crisis.
The alternative? Government should use these funds to pay off a measure of mortgage debt, taking an equity stake in each property. As well as giving liquidity to the banks, this provides genuine help to consumers, lowering arrears and repossessions. This solution simultaneously keeps inflation in check, lowers the burden on employers, and keeps unemployment and benefits in check.
For lenders, risk levels are reduced, and equilibrium can return to the market. Maximum lending criteria is fixed, and irresponsible lending becomes a thing of the past. Placing a salary cap on senior executives in addition would further rebalance the market in favour of the consumer.
10. DEMAND an end to any and all deficit spending
As President Ronald Reagan once said "You and I are told we must choose between a left, or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down."
We at "Let's Get this Right" agree with that statement and we recognize that the US economy is in enormous trouble. This includes Wall Street, the US Government, and every American living on main-street; no one is immune to the impact of the current economic situation.
When Wall Street needs help it turns to the government, when the government needs help it turns to the American people and when the American people need help, it is often too late for us to obtain help because the government has already over spent the tax dollars, fees and fines it collects as part of its daily function.
When it needs money for a spending bill, or a financial bailout, the government either cuts spending somewhere, shifts spending temporarily, raises taxes on the American people or simply prints more money.
You have the opportunity to preserve adult choice, defend small business owners and protect the jobs of hospitality employees by SUPPORTING AN EXEMPTION FOR LIQUOR LICENSED ESTABLISHMENTS FROM ANY STATEWIDE SMOKING BAN.
Businesses that serve beverage alcohol for consumption on- premise and their employees will suffer severe economic consequences from total statewide smoking ban. Consumer choice will be eliminated.
PLEASE don't disregard the interest and concerns of those who livelihoods and adult preferences will be most negatively impacted by legislature's action.
Please let the citizens and business owners of Michigan have a choice!
12. Don't Dam the Williams Valley
The NSW State Government announced in November 2006 the controversial proposal to build a massive 450GL dam (approx. the size of Sydney Harbour!) on the Williams River in the Dungog Shire about 1 1/2 hours north of Newcastle.
The announcement was made with absolutely no consultation with land holders in the proposed inundated area, water users down the length of the Williams River, Dungog Shire Council, the people of the Dungog and surrounding areas, recreational users of the river and the magnificent valley.
The dam, if constructed, would inundate over 2000 hectares of prime productive farmland, and displace 90 farming families. It would destroy the Williams River ecosystem which includes many platypus, mussels, freshwater crayfish, bass, long-necked turtles, water dragons, two hectares of magnificent river oaks and not to forget the ancient watergum (Tristaniopsis laurina) at Precipice Bend. The destruction of river ecosystems by dams is well documented by the thousands of publications available in the global literature that report the adverse effects of dams on river and riparian ecosystems.
The NSW State Government and its water instrumentality, Hunter Water Corporation, are railroading through this proposal. There is evidence to suggest the proposal came about for political reasons and was a knee jerk response to the extended drought recently affecting much of NSW. There is a glaring lack of interest, research or recognition of alternative methods of water harvesting which would be more economic, safer, sustainable, and less environmentally and socially damaging in the longer term. Not one of the water planning documents released by HWC prior to November 2006 state that the Tillegra Dam option is desirable.
This is a water grab by the State Government of massive proportions and it will be end-users (ordinary Hunter Region water rate payers) who will be paying huge dividends to State Government coffers.
13. Planet Earth and the U.N. belongs to God!
As an international consultant for entrepreneurial and social development, with more than 20 years of expertise; I had the opportunity to formulate for the European Commission (EC/UE), a innovative project to foster competitiveness of micro and small enterprises in El Salvador, which is now underway.
The UE spirit to finance that project is to support entrepreneurs to reach economic sustainability, prosperity, and a satisfactory life quality, in order to contribute for an integral development in our nation, that will lead us to a global market niche. And the ultimate goal of that visionary spirit is to build a world with equity and more opportunities to live.
A very important area of my expertise has been gained from international training and projects implementation; and one of the most important learnings I was in Taiwan, Republic of China; a nation with kind and laborious people, innovative mind, loyal heart, and with a sound spirit of entrepreneurship and firm beliefs.
Now, back to the spirit of that project I formulated for the EU; a guessing thought arise in my mind: Why we in the world pretend to develop our countries excluding other nations from the international politic, social, and economic scenario?. Something wrong is in the mind of leaders who decide to act in that way. And that misunderstanding, comes from their heart, because they forget God, the only one owner of this planet, the only governor above all nations.
God wants all the humankind to be his truly sons and daughters, and for that purpose He will remove any obstacles; including those ones who deny Taiwan, Republic of China as a member of the United Nations organization.
Progress can not be built excluding others. World sustainability can not be built on foundations of political ego and unreasonable decisions about the human rights of others.
14. phan doi CSVN dan ap cha Ly
Roman Catholic priest Thaddeus Nguyen Van Ly home detained again.
Atlantic Yards is one of the newest projects in Brooklyn. Looming over the MTA and LIRR's Vanderbuilt rail yards, it is one of the most constructive projects to be done this decade according to atlantic yard.com.
The project of Atlantic Yards' surrounding perimeter is Flatbush avenue, Pacific street, Dean Street, and Vanderbuilt avenue. Which is in the area of Downtown Brooklyn . Atlantic Yards is a 4.2 billion dollar project that includes a sports and entertainment arena that will be home to the basketball team the nets, new buildings for commercial and office space, open space, and a hotel.
Atlantic Yards will solve the problems of insufficient buildings and housing. There is just not enough residential space, such as apartments in downtown Brooklyn. The apartments that do exist have several setbacks such as bad plumbing and heating, broken ceilings cracked walls, and broken windows. New buildings are desperately needed. The unemployment rate is high due to a lack of bussiness in retail according to the "Brooklyn Market Review of Spring 2006", recent developments have been steadily improving Downtown Brooklyn's economy.
The Atlantic Yards project will bring a multitude of economic activity, that will provide many jobs for Downtown Brooklyn. One of the two main sources that will bring jobs into the area are the construction projects and the new NETSb arena.
The four Atlantic Yards communities are seperated by the railyards. The railyards prevents citizens from easily going from one community to the other. The Atlantic Yards project solves this problem by connecting the communities by turning most of the railyards into open- space. Atlantic yards is a project that will create more jobs, set up affordable housing and build new buildings.
The solution to downtown Brooklyn's problems is the Atlantic Yards project. The Atlantic Yards project will create 6,860 homes of mixed income. Of which 4,500 will be rental units. Half of these will be put aside for middle and low income families. This will solve the problem of high rent and lack of housing for people in the Atlantic Yards area. Due to the construction on the Atlantic Yards project new construction job oppurtunities will be available. Forest City Ratner ( an urban real estate company , the head of Atlantic Yards) has promised minority and women owned companies will be the prioritry for hire.
The Construction of Atlantic Yards will create enough jobs to last for ten years. In addition to creating new jobs, Atlantic Yards which will be built over the rail yards will connect the four existing Brooklyn Communities and provide new open space. The new development Atlantic Yards will be a great happenning. Downtown Brooklyn will look cleaner ( without any of the new Brooklyn Buildings that were cracked or broken) and more organized. Building the Nets arena will cause another subway opening , which leads directly to ten subway lines and the LIRR, which will reduce traffic. Also the Atlantic Yards project will fit in nicely with the skyline of existing communities. The economic benefits of the project are 6 billion dollars in tax revenue, new jobs, and greater oppurtunity for bussiness to thrive according to Atlantic Yards .com. Atlantic Yards, by creating millions of jobs, bringing in an arena, putting out plenty of affordable homes, and bringing in revenue will be, according to sports economist andrew Zimbalist Brooklyn's greatest " economic generator".
Should same-sex marriage be legalised in Australia?
One of the government’s roles is to ensure that all Australian citizens have access to fairness, justice and equality. The government is reinforcing prejudice by not allowing equality and the same rights to all citizens. Discrimination comes in many forms and singling out people because of their sexual orientation, and prohibiting them from being legally joined in marriage is just another type.
At the start of 2006, a week before Mardi Gras, Treasurer Peter Costello told the Sydney Institute gathering that marriage rightly applied only to man and woman.
He pointed to changes in 2004 to the Marriage Act allowing homosexuals access to their partner’s superannuation as an example of how the government had recognised gay rights.
However it was a comment about how the government does not outlaw gay sex that angered Ms Stricker and Professor Phelps, a former president of the Australian Medical Association, working GP and a media commentator.
Mr. Costello said: “I think we do recognise the rights of gay and lesbian people in Australia. We do not criminalise conduct or behaviour.”
Professor Phelps, offended by the comment, said it would be like saying to Mr. Costello at the Mardi Gras: “You are really lucky that we don’t lock you up because you are heterosexual.”
Sydney has one of the highest gay, lesbian and bisexual populations in the world, all of whom should have the same rights as the rest of society. Same-sex marriage will provide access to social benefits—from inheritance, to pensions, to longer hospital visitation rights. Why are Australians saying that it’s alright to be homosexual, promoting clubs and bars and even celebrating a mass parade (Mardi Gras) every year, however drawing a line at same-sex marriages?
Some people believe that same-sex marriage will be a threat to the institution of marriage. Homosexuality is recognised in our society and broadly accepted. It is nothing new, so why would allowing same-sex marriages affect Australian society and life?
Marriage simply allows people to be legally bonded in a social and economic contract.
Marriage is not solely about procreation. If that were the case, people who were unable to have children would be refused marriage licenses, as would the couples solely focused on a working life. People marry for many other reasons such as love, companionship and commitment. Legislating for gay marriage merely recognises the status quo. There are already a lot of same-sex couples in Australia involved in a committed relationship, and positively contributing to Australian society.
Those who argue against same-sex marriage and for marriage inequality are denying children the legal protection and economic safety that comes from marriage. All children should be able to enjoy the tangible and intangible benefits that marriage - hetero or homosexual - can bring. A lot of same-sex parents want what heterosexual parents want—the freedom to marry, so as to provide a stable and committed environment for themselves and their family.
Marriage is a legal, economic, social and family contract that has evolved over time. It has an ever-changing face. It can adapt. There is nothing in the ‘contract’ that prohibits same-sex couples from enjoying the same benefits. These were just prejudices in the past. Let’s evolve with the times.
17. Sullivan County Living Wage
A coalition of local groups, led by Sullivan Peace and Justice, is seeking the enactment of Living Wage legislation in Sullivan County, NY.
This petition is the first step of a campaign to accomplish this -- a petition that calls upon the county legislature to draft a resolution for subsequent enactment.
Say No to lynching poor women. I call every human on this earth to let the Nigerian government know that it has no right to allow that Amina be lynched on June as stated. The country has major problems such as illiteracy, HIV, poverty, criminality, unlawfull emigration, highjacked elections at any levels, and so on which need remedies. Killing her will not solve anything. That's why I appeal all the countries to boycott Nigeria's exports. I would also ask the UN to impose tight economic sanctions on the country. No one has the right to kill in the so-called name of God.
19. Freedom for Jorge Luis García Pérez (Antúnez)
Posted on Tue, Feb. 19, 2008
A Hobson's choice: Exile or prison
Jorge Luis García Pérez, known as Antúnez, served out his 17-year term, which ended last year (2007). A former sugar-cane cutter, he was sent to prison for standing in a public square and calling for democratic change. Beyond being harassed and beaten, he has been detained eight times since he was freed in April. Although he has arrangements to come to the United States for medical treatment, he insists he will not leave Cuba unless his return is guaranteed by the regime.
The number of political prisoners declines as Cuba tries to improve its image. Yet the repression, like the dictatorship, has not changed.
The international community must continue to press for democratic change in Cuba.

Prisoner of Conscience Profile:
Confined to punishment cells. Due to the frequent beatings that he has suffered he has bone fractures, and is suffering from kidney failure caused by hypoglycemia.
Biography: Jorge Luis García Pérez (Antúnez) was born on October 10, 1964. The economic situation of his home and the delicate health of his mother forced him to study at the ESBEC (Basic Secondary Schools in the Fields) and the IPUEC (Pre-university School in the Fields). This is where he first began to question the legitimacy of the dictatorship in Cuba. The process of auto-liberation began when he had the opportunity to read about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
From that moment on he began a process of rejecting all the indoctrination that was taught in the school, and for that reason he was criticized and sanctioned by the school. Because of this, and the desperate need to earn money to alleviate the economic misery his family lived in. Jorge Luis understood that his dream of becoming an attorney was just that a dream. To support his family he worked in jobs that involved heavy manual labor: as a sugar cane cutter, a construction worker and a farm laborer. He was fired from these jobs, simply because he was verbally critical of the dictatorship running his country.
At this point Jorge Luis began to be monitored closely by the Cuban government. After six months working at the Cuban Atomic Plant in Juraguá, Cienfuegos he was fired after being investigated by the Ministry of Labor, which classified him as "disaffected to the revolutionary process" in other words disaffected with the dictatorship.
During the last days of 1983, while chatting with friends at the XX Anniversary Square in the city of Placetas in Cuba Antúnez said that the sole individual responsible for the death of 23 Cubans in combat with the US Army in Grenada was Fidel Castro.
He was immediately beaten down by agents of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR). He was taken from there to the Department of Instruction of the State Security Police in Santa Clara, where he was released after being issued a "warning. " But the intimidation and repression didn't stop Jorge Luis' will to speak his mind as a free man. On March 15, 1990, nearly seven years later at the same XX Anniversary Square listening to an official radio transmission calling for the IV Congress of the Communist Party, he began to raise his voice and shout that "communism is a utopian error " and "we want and we need reforms like those taking place in Eastern Europe". He was immediately physically assaulted by agents of the PNR and State Security Police, who took him again to the headquarters in Santa Clara, where he was charged for "oral enemy propaganda". He was charged with the "crime" of speaking his mind openly and without fear.
That is how Jorge Luis García Pérez (Antúnez) began his long and courageous fight for freedom as a prisoner of conscience. In June of the same year, already imprisoned in the Provincial Prison of Santa Clara, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison. His response to this unjust sentence was to start a hunger strike that lasted 21 days.
This was the first of many occasions that Jorge Luis appealed to this method of protest against the innumerable brutal beatings, being locked away in punishment cells without access to water or sunlight, and the offenses directed against him for being of African descent. Despite all this the dictatorship has failed to break the spirit of this young prisoner of conscience. On February 19, 1991 Antúnez declared himself a "Preso Plantado", which is a political prisoner who refuses to wear the same uniform as non-political prisoners and rejected "Communist Re-education."
Among Antunez's numerous acts of rebellion and protest one stands out above the others. It was his daring escape from Las Grimas prison, in Placetas, on October 17, 1992. Captured later in the larger prison that is Cuba, and returned to prison. In 1995, held in Kilo 8 Maximum Security Prison, known by the nickname of "Se me perdió la llaves" (I have lost my keys), he founded along with other prisoners of conscience, an organization called Pedro Luis Boitel Political Prisoner's Movement, dedicated to denouncing the situation of political prisoners inside the dictatorship's prisons and to promote civil disobedience in response to the brutality of their jailers.
The life of Jorge Luis García Pérez (Antúnez), has been one of a commitment to freedom and the courage to exercise it and defend it. A young man (actually only 32 years old), of African descent and from modest economic origins has faced hatred both racially and politically motivated directed at him with the full force of a totalitarian dictatorship. His sole defenses have been his humanity, his courage, his commitment to defending his fundamental human rights and liberties. Ironically under the tyranny operating Cuba his defense and exercise of his personal freedom has under the perversion of the law there and the denial of justice been held against him by the dictatorship as his only crime.
At the time of this writing Antúnez's health has been steadily deteriorating due to beatings, hunger strikes, and lack of medical attention that he has suffered over the years of his imprisonment since 1991. In addition to the bone fractures he is having difficulty breathing and has a lung tumor which the prison authorities claim is not malignant, but refuse to allow him to see a cancer specialist as his health deteriorates. To protest this medical neglect Antúnez has been on a hunger strike since the beginning of April below is a translation of the story that appeared in the newspaper on April 25 about his deteriorating condition. Please speak up for him and demand his freedom and at the very least adequate medical care while held in the dictatorship's prison.

20. Say "no" to sanctions and War Against Iraq
In Iraq, infant and child mortality has doubled in the past 12 years - 1 in 5 children in south and central Iraq are chronically malnourished - Iraqi hospitals in areas heavily bombed by US and UK planes during the Gulf War are full of children dying from a cancer - epidemic and many babies are born with congenital malformations. The Iraqi national literacy rate has dropped 22% over the past 12 years There continues to be regular bombing of Iraq by the US and UK - wounding and killing Iraqi citizens.
When asked whether the death of 500,000 Iraqi children was worth the price of implementing sanctions, the US Ambassador to the UN, Madeleine Albright, said "it was worth the price". We campaign as a women-only group in order to create a space in which women, from all nationalities, feel comfortable expressing themselves and acting together. The economic sanctions which affect ordinary Iraqis must be separated from diplomatic and military sanctions against the regime War is not the way to fight terrorism on a global scale, nor is it the way to improve the plight of the Iraqi people. Opposing sanctions is not the same as supporting the Iraqi regime - Opposing sanctions is supporting the Iraqi people 'If people could hear and see what is being done in their names in Iraq, they would be outraged. But they don't, so it continues.' -- John Simpson, BBC World Affairs Editor 12 years ago Iraq was a rapidly modernising state. It had good health care and education, modern tele-communications, water treatment and electricity systems. But it also had a dictatorial, oppressive regime which the Iraqi people neither elected nor were able to remove from power. Economic, military and political sanctions were imposed when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990 - 'the most comprehensive in history' according to a US State Department official. 12 years later they are still in place. Sanctions, far from weakening the government, have helped it to keep control over an exhausted and desperate population. Saddam Hussein is still in power and is still carrying out massive human rights violations. Iraq is now one of the least developed, most damaged countries in the world. At least half a million children under 5 have died because of economic sanctions and countless others continue to suffer. Goods have been scarce, prices high and it is ordinary people who are suffering most. Disease, child mortality and malnutrition are rocketing because food, essential medicines and clean water are often unavailable or unaffordable. The UN has recently accepted a new so-called 'smart sanctions' proposal sponsored by the US and the UK. 'Smart sanctions' may allow more goods into the country, but will do nothing to increase the purchasing power of ordinary people or provide the means to reconstruct the country's shattered infrastructure. In emphasising the two most import causes of the humanitarian crisis - poverty and poor public infrastructure - Tun Myat, UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq has said: 'No matter how much you try and modify (the existing UN humanitarian programme) it is not designed for - and it will never be - a substitute for normal economic activity... I consider water and sanitation to be the biggest killer of children in this country." Without resources or spare parts, roads, power plants and sewage works, many of which were targeted in the Gulf War, remain unrepaired and have a devastating impact on the health and well-being of Iraqi people. With the decline in normal economic activity, there has been a huge increase in poverty, high unemployment and very low salaries. Many people are so poor that they have to sell part of the food ration - the only income they receive. Sanctions have also torn at the social fabric of Iraqi life, creating an increase in violent crime, divorce and prostitution. Women are risking backstreet abortions or abandoning their babies because they know they won't be able to feed them and there has been an increase in street children. Iraq has also suffered an intellectual embargo. For 12 years no educational or research materials have been allowed in and about four million Iraqis have fled, creating a terrifying brain drain. Participation in education at all levels has declined and the illiteracy rate has risen sharply. The 1991 Gulf War has left a fatal legacy of depleted uranium carried in the warheads of missiles released during the blanket bombing in the south of Iraq. It will cost a fortune to clear up and even then it will be too late for the many Iraqi children suffering from leukaemia and related cancers.
Many children are born with malformations so severe that they do not live. Several high-ranking UK officials working in the country have resigned in protest at this misguided policy. 'We are in the process of destroying an entire society. It is as simple and terrifying as that. It is illegal and immoral.' Dennis Halliday, former UN Humanitarian Co-ordinator in Iraq. And the bombing raids continue-- The US, supported by
Britain, is now threatening to extend the 'war on terrorism' to Iraq. Inevitably, any military action will result in large civilian casualties and further damage and disruption to the fragile infrastructure and food distribution systems is likely to result in a humanitarian catastrophe. It's time to stop punishing the ordinary Iraqi people. -- Act Together. Women Against Sanctions in Iraq
21. Boycott Vanity Fair Corporation Products
HELP WORKERS IN SUPPORTING THEMSELVES AND THEIR FAMILIES
Recently the VF Corporation that manufactures brands such as Lee, Wrangler, Bestform, Lily of France, JanSport, Eastpak, North Face, Jantzen, Red Kap and many others(http://www.vfc.com/pages/leading_brands.asp) decided to lay off approximately 1,800 workers from their factories in El Paso.
These factories are the last of the garment industry on the El Paso side of the border-- leaving a capable and experienced workforce jobless, with no benefits, no time for transition and little hope of finding other jobs. It is a workforce primarily composed of women, who due to discriminatory corporate and state practices do not fit the "retraining prototype".
There is reason to suspect Vanity Fair intends to close these factories completely (http://www.vfc.com/pr/pr73.asp). This means the VF Corporate plan will eventually leave five thousand families of Mexican origin without economic support, and at the same time take advantage low wages in Latin America. Faced with no other opportunities, the workforce on the U.S. side of the border will likely be forced into sweatshop conditions.
However, Vanity Fair workers in El Paso are not voiceless. They are fighting the "political system". They have also formed committees in the different Vanity Fair factories to negotiate with the Corporation. So far the corporation has ignored their requests. Because there must be corporate accountability, they urgently ask for your help.
Please sign their petition boycotting Vanity Fair Merchandise until a more just plan can be agreed on. The public must unite its economic and political strength to demand justice.
22. A just plan for VF Workers in El Paso.
The economic situation along the El Paso/Juarez, Mexico border continues to deteriorate with the implementation of free trade policies and now with the impact of September 11. Since NAFTA we have lost more than 26,000 jobs in manufacturing plants in clothing as well as electronics. Recently the VF Corporation that manufactures brands such as Lee, Wrangler, Gitano, Vanity Fair, etc. decided to lay off approximately 1,800 workers from their factories in El Paso.
These factories are the last of the garment industry, leaving a capable and experienced workforce jobless and with little hope of finding similar jobs.
The VF Corporation considers itself the largest apparel company in the world with sales of $5.7 billion last year. There is no reason why these workers should be left practically on the street, with little time for transition or training.
We must put an end to this. We must unite our economic and political strength to demand justice for the workers.
The workers have formed a committee in the different VF factories to demand that the corporation take into consideration a more just plan that includes the retention of 3,000 jobs that remain. We are launching a campaign to obtain justice from this corporation. We urgently ask for your help.

23. Keep the Pound !
The British government has said that it would decide to join the Euro if it is in Britain's economic interests to do so. If Britain did then she would lose her ability to set her own interest and exchange rates. Britain may also lose some control of public spending, taxation and her sovereignty in economic affairs.
Currently 73% of British businesses and 60% of the population want to keep the pound. Clearly the risks from joining the Euro greatly out weigh the benefits.
