1. Stop Requiring Animal Testing
Animal testing is a cruel and barbaric practice that should be banned. Animals do not want to be tortured, locked up, neglected and abused any more than we do, so why should we do it to them?
Myth 1# "Animal testing is vital to save lives".
Animal testing actually kills more people than it saves because of the fact that animals have different bodies and genetic systems from us. Even animals that are very similar to us in terms of DNA, such as pigs and monkeys, are still too different for every result from tests on them to be entirely accurate.
For instance, chimpanzees are immune to HIV, Malaria and hepatitis. Aspirin causes birth defects in most lab animals, but it doesn't do this to people. Paracetamol is toxic to cats and grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage in dogs.
In fact, most so-called "medical" experiments that are done on animals are actually done with money in mind, not people. That is one of the main reasons why these misleading experiments are still performed.
If a drug is passed as safe due to animal tests, it is then often given to people. If a drug passes as dangerous and unsafe due to animal tests, it is often given to people anyway because even the drug companies often know that animals have different bodies and genetic systems from us. If a person takes it and then gets any really bad side effects, the company cannot be sued because they did do the safety tests.
Myth 2# "Lab animals are always treated kindly and looked after properly".
Although some may well be treated with kindness and cared for properly, many of them are not. In fact, during investigations, animal defenders have filmed horrifying scenes that should disgust us all.
Lab animals are often shot at, held against red hot metal plates, have boiling water poured over them, force-fed dangerous chemicals, cut open, gassed, have their brains damaged with severe blows to their heads, starved, locked up and have their skin irritated by various different substances.
Lab animals are also sometimes abused outside of the experiments. Laboratory workers have been filmed punching, slapping and shaking animals before.
Myth 3# "Animals do not feel pain, have emotions or help others".
This is probably one of the biggest lies, misunderstandings, of the century. Animals definitely DO feel pain, have emotions and help others. Anyone who believes that animals do not feel pain should go and kick a dog and then watch what happens. If animals could not feel pain or fear, how do you think they would survive out in the wild?
Animals definitely do have emotions. When you tell a dog off, they will often cower away because they know that you are angry with them. Anyone who has ever had or even stayed with a cat before will know that cats are definitely more likely to scratch and bite at certain points in time than others. How else can this be explained other than in the fact that they have moods like people do?
Also, time and time again have dogs been known to pine for their owners after they have died. Hachiko carried on going to wait at the train station for his master's return until about ten years after his master had died and Greyfriar's Bobby waited by his master's grave for at least ten years before he himself died, apparently of the same illness that had killed his master.
Dogs have even been known to pine for their people when they have only gone to work or gone out for a little while. Dog behaviourists and experts often call this, separation anxiety, but a lot of it is really just loneliness and boredom. How else do you explain the scenario of a person leaving for a while and returning to get complaints from his or her neighbours about his or her dog's barking and howling and then finding broken items and chewed up furniture all over their home?
Even wild animals have been known to help others of their own species, even if they are not directly related to them. Lionesses have been known to adopt baby antelopes, wild birds will often try to save their mates' lives and even vampire bats have been adopt other members of their own species. Chimpanzees have been known to save ducklings and at least one baby boy has been rescued by a gorilla before.
If these really did not care, why do you think they did these sorts of things? Why did they bother to help out here?
Myth 4# "There is no alternative to animal testing."
There are, nowadays, so many alternatives to animal testing that it need not be used any longer. Fake skin and organs, donated cells and body parts, studies of living people and computer models can all now be used, and these can produce results that are far more relevant and useful than those optioned through animal tests.
2. Landlords should allow pets
So many people are having to move out of their homes due to the bedroom tax in UK and they have to downsize and can't take their pets with them.
People have to move due to relationship break ups, lease ending and various other reasons and they have to move quick. Pets go into rescue every day because of landlords not allowing them. They should ask for more of a deposit and allow pets.
Some people can't have children and pets are their only substitute and in some cases that can't be helped; this is taken away from them.
3. Bring Kai Home To His Family!
"Kai" was seized from his home on Tuesday 14th May 2013, after a neighbour reported to police that "Kai" was a "Pitbull" ! :(
The Police came to the family's property where they proceeded to measure "Kai", then after an assessment within the home (Where "Kai" showed to be a loving and well rounded dog), he was then taken by the Police to a Undisclosed Kennels in another county, where the family are told he will be held while being further assessed.
The family cannot visit or see "Kai" while this takes place and now the family awaits further news on "Kai" reference, court dates, ETC.
This family are now truly heartbroken because of their family member being taken from them, the family includes 4 children who are hurting and confused... wondering why their dog is gone. :(
DDA WATCH ARE involved in this case and are helping the family with legal advice etc.
But we need to make more people aware of how this BSL law needs to be changed, especially when it comes to innocent dogs who have a) done nothing wrong, and b) "Look" like they could be "Of Type".
Please visit www.worldwidecaninecrusade.com, and join for free to help us raise awareness and help change BSL WORLDWIDE.

4. End non rodent tests and animal experiments in Europe
The current legislation from the Euro Parliament - all products must be tested on rodents and non rodents - allows dogs, cats and major primates to be used as fodder for any experiments.
Dogs are fed poison into the lungs etc etc. Establishments who test products for profit can use dogs and cats in any way they choose(Huntingdon, Inveresk Research, Covance etc ) in any way they choose, hiding behind this inaccurate and archaic legislation. NON-ANIMAL RESEARCH IS PR0VEN TO BE MORE ACCURATE.
The BreedeValley SPCA is facing a major crisis. The National SPCA wants them to close their doors on the 10th of May 2013 already. Gerda Du Toit has launched a petition to stop this from happening.
The second request is to help the SPCA lower their debt. If you could find it in your heart to spare some money to help them, their bank details are:
Breedevallei DBV;. FNB, Takkode 200407; Rek 54330149913
If you know of a company (or own a company) who can perhaps sponsor a bit more, I'm sure the SPCA would be eternally greatful as will all the animals they help.
Once the Breedevallei SPCA closes its doors and there is no one to take care of all those animals and we finally realise what all they did, I don't want to be one of those people who says: "I wish someone had done something" when I can be one of those people now.
6. Long Branch Beach Access for Dogs
There is a warm weather ban for dogs on all beaches and the promenade within The City of Long Branch from May 1st THRU September 30th.
"ANIMAL CONTROL REGULATIONS REQUIRE ALL ANIMALS TO BE LEASHED AND OWNERS ARE REQUIRED TO REMOVE WASTE.
PLEASE HELP US KEEP OUR BEACHES, BOARDWALK AND PROMENADE SAFE AND SANITARY."
Pollution: Dogs do not pollute water by swimming in it and waste issues are easily overcome by providing bags and bins and by policing compliance.
Also in regard to pollution, I live here in Pier Village, and I am on the beach at least once a day, if not three times a day with my dog, 365 days a year. So, I can testify that it is not the animals and there owners that are causing the pollution of our public beaches. It is the people who leave all of their trash, water bottles, clothing, amongst many other things on the beach throughout the year that are causing our beaches pollution, especially in the warmer months. I for one, am a pet owner who cleans the beach of plastics and other trash that is left on the beach by responsible members of our community and/or visitors during my walks with my dog, and I know a lot of other dog owners that do the same.
Safety: Dogs love nothing more than a walk along the beach. Not only is it good for their health, but ours as well. It allows us to work off adrenaline, and enjoy mother nature at her best. The beaches are a place where dogs and dog-owners can come together to socialize. Dogs are a vital component in human well being, and should be allowed to accompany their owners on beach walks throughout the year.
Please sign this petition to show that you support fair usage of our public beaches, and that you consider recreation with dogs to be a mainstream form of recreation which needs to be acknowledged at the state level.
Who should sign to make our petition most effective? Monmouth County Residents (Full time or Part Time), Tourists and those who travel to the Long Branch Beaches regularly. If you are not in the county, please explain your connection to Monmouth County in order for the petition to be as effective as possible in the local government.
Your dog would always stand up for you...it's time for you to stand up for your dog, and a compromise on this issue should to be reached.

8. URGE EPA TO REMOVE D-LIMONENE FROM PET PRODUCTS!!
D-LIMONENE IS A DANGEROUS CHEMICAL TO OUR COMPANION PETS.
Dogs experiencing epidermal necrosis associated with d-limoene are usually in pain and systemically ill. Anemia and liver and kidney damage may also occur. Supportive care is usually essential until the condition resolves. Severe forms of this condition are similar in severity to what is seen in third degree burn victims, with extensive skin damage resulting in skin sloughing, depression, shock, coma and often death. See Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy XIII 1999. pp.556; Muller and Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology 1995; pp.590; In studies & cases from Journal of Venterinary Medicine, AVMA, EPA, NIH, CDC, WHO, NLM, TOXNET, PUBMED -- D-limonene's health effects on dogs and cats have documented to cause eye, skin and lung irritation in varying degrees, also exhibited hypothermia, tremors, paralysis, central nervous system effects, respiratory effects, behavioral changes, ataxia, agitation, seizures, liver & kidney failure, septicemia and other life threatening skin disorders. This chemical is being used to satisfy the "natural" marketing ploy for pet manufacturers. "Natural" does not mean harmless. Its benefits do not outweigh the harm it can do. People love their animals and they need to be made aware of this potentially life threatening chemical before another pet becomes so ill or dies.
Dog and cat owners deserve to know this type of knowledge. I experienced it first hand with my dog Ginger what illeffects d-limonene can cause. Even I as a doting pet owner never knew of this problematic chemical.
My dog Ginger cannot tell how much she suffered or her fear of almost dying, so I will.

9. Stop killing our poundies and give us answers - Blacktown Pound
What part of animal re-homing officer dont they get? How is it the first implemented program of the animal rehoming officer to kill 5 out of 7 dogs on the kill list?
The AWL uses that temperament test to help rehabilitate dogs now, 20 years ago they used these temperament tests just to kill dogs. Blacktown pound can NOT ignore rehabilitation and just kill. Nearly 2 years of no kill rate for dogs blown away by the one person who was meant to save them, do we want to stand by and watch while blacktown pound turns into another RSPCA type killing field? NO!
Protest will be held on Monday 18/03/2013 -9:00am
Blacktown Council Chambers, 1 Flushcombe Road Blacktown.

The RETRIEVER CLUB of LUXEMBOURG with about 50 active members is a non-profit organization and celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2013.
The Club organizes the club shows, retriever training (held every Sunday), workshops, family meetings and puppy placement.
The R.C.L. is a well-known organization, especially for its club shows, that attracts every year about 300 exhibitors from all around Europe.
Now, the Centrale du Chien de Chasse (Gun-dog Group) to which the R.C.L. is affiliated, intends to amend its articles (its statutes) in which an article says that only the C.C.C. is competent to organize working trials and beauty contests for gun-dog breeds:
"La C.C.C. est la seule compétente d'organiser des concours de travail et de beauté en relation avec les races de chiens de chasse"
This article refuses the R.C.L. to organize its annual Retriever club show as of 2014, in which it would be the 25th club show.
These new statutes will be voted on the 10th of March 2013 during the annual general meeting of the C.C.C.
Please help the RETRIEVER CLUB LUXEMBOURG by signing this petition, that the R.C.L. may maintain its organizational autonomy of as well as its own annual club show
Several people have been attacked in Mexico, including a one-year-old child and a teenage girl, and stray dogs are being blamed for these attacks. However, there is not that much true evidence that the dogs actually are responsible.
They were tested for rabies, but the results were negative. They were also tested for traces of human DNA, but the results have not come back yet.
The dogs are all, apparently, very scared at the moment. Although it is likely that others of the same species may have been responsible for the attacks, it is unlikely that these dogs are the true killers.
However, some people still think that they were responsible and they are at risk of being put on death row. The killing of these animals is probably not necessary, so why should it be done, especially when there is so little evidence that they are responsible?
12. Support the right to live for stray dogs in Cyprus
The Cypriot parliament passed legislation which allows euthanasia of stray animals.
This is against the right to live and we demand that the parliament terminate this law since it is AGAINST THE RIGHT TO LIFE.
Did you know that, in this country, that there are dog pounds that kill strays if they are not claimed after seven days? In fact, one dog is killed every hour by local authorities in this country.
Stray dogs are NOT always pure mean or vicious. Not all of them were abandoned or born as strays; some of them may have just been abused/neglected that no one else knew or cared about and they just ran away. Some of them may have even been bred as companions and they just got lost or stolen and hadn't had chance to bond with their people beforehand.
I used to walk dogs for a shelter. A lot of the ones that I walked there had been strays before coming in and at least some of them were absolutely lovely.
If a stray dog has had a home before, and been socialised and trained properly, there is about as much chance of someone being attacked by that one as there is of them being attacked by any other dog. Stray dogs are still part of the same "man's best friend" species; they just happen to be homeless, that's all.
There has even been at least one case of a stray dog protecting and caring for young kids. Do you really think that such a devoted hero is likely to attack anyone unless provoked?
A lot of people may tell you that, because they are not purebreds, they do not have equal rights. What a total load of nonsense. ANY dog of ANY breed or type can become a stray if, say, the owner dies and no one else who would want them knows about them.
Also, why don't mixed breeds matter as much as purebreds? Surely if you love dogs, that should include them as well? The quality of believing that pedigree dogs are superior to so-called "faulty mongrels" that can actually be just as good-tempered and obedient as any purebred reminds me of the qualities exhibited by the Nazis, i.e their belief that the pure German and Aryan races are superior to all others. Did you also know that the Nazis used to often be hateful to the people who not considered to be "pure" as well?
Stray dogs DO NOT need to be killed. All it would take would be for the UK Government to require everyone except licensed and fully-checked and approved breeders to spay/neuter their dogs and require all authority dog pounds to always at least try to put the dogs in rescue spaces instead of killing them once their seven days in there are up.
Spaying and neutering actually does more good than harm. It can help to prevent the animals in question from getting certain cancers such as that of the uterus and testis, and it can make them live longer.
14. STOP the trafficking of LIVE ANIMALS on Kijiji (except for valid Rescues)
Thousands of live animals are trafficked daily on Kijiji classifieds worldwide; even by CONVICTED animal abusers! Kijiji has NO POSSIBLE way to pre-screen sellers, nor ensure that buyers are not supporting ill practices.
Ask Kijiji to HALT the sale of live animals on their website, with the exception of valid / confirmed animal rescue organizations.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife trust (HWT) in conjunction with Hampshire Council and Foot Print Ecology are planning to graze livestock (the current plan is to graze cattle and ponies) on Yateley common (both sides of the A30) Blackbushe and Hartford Bridge flats. In order to do this they will need to erect boundary fencing, cattle grids and gates.
The HWT gave the public a chance to air their views last Saturday 15th September at the Tythings, however many concerned people were not aware this “consultation” was taking place. Therefore we feel it necessary to start a petition ensuring all those opposed to the grazing of livestock on the common have a voice.
Research on the internet shows that these conservation grazing projects are causing problems to common land users all over the country, with gates and cattle grids being installed often without authorisation from the Highway Authority. Self closing gate mechanisms like rat traps are causing horrific accidents to horses attempting to pass through the gates, and cattle grids that often obstruct the right of way are causing accidents to people on foot, ridden horses as well as the grazing stock.
Ayten Hope is a beautiful and gentle Chocolate Dobermann. We know at some point she has had puppies. She is only 2 years old and has the most horrible story to tell. She watched her two brothers being shot to death in a forest. She was also shot- twice in her leg and left to die by a river. Angels must have watched her and she was taken to a local vet.
The vet operated on her in the most incompetent, butcherous and barbaric way, being described by other veterinarians as 'experimented on'. This resulted in her becoming paralysed and in pain. They did not even remove the bullet fragments from her frail and dying body. The vet then tried to rehome Ayten Hope. The neglect and mistreatment she received while she was ‘’in the care of’’ this evil vet cannot be understood. She lost more and more weight. When she wasn't adopted by anyone. She was then dumped at the local dog shelter. When she arrived it was obvious she had been starved. She had a tiny little body of skin and bones, wracked with pain. She couldn’t even lie down without suffering. She had been mistreated for months by a person- a veterinarian- who has given an oath to protect and care for animals but Ayten Hope was defiled and abused in a way that no animal should ever know.
The evil vet WILL NOT be allowed to get away with this. With all the good people in this world joining hands across the globe, we can change her misfortune and prevent another tragedy like this ever occuring at the hands of this cruel and sick woman again. Ayten Hope will give hope to all the others who perish at the hands of vile and negligent humans. Please help her today by signing and sharing. If you can please visit 'Let's Adopt Global' to see her rescue and give towards her treatment and rehabilitation or simply pledge your support. Ayten Hope thanks you all!

17. Stop dog poisoning in Turkey
Street dogs are still being poisoned in Turkey. The dogs suffer a horrible dead. This kind of poison is even harmful for small children. This is injected in meat or even bones, it is odorless or taste less.
Every year before the season starts the government "cleans" the streets. That means that the animals are being killed before the tourist arrive. Every year hundred of animals are being killed. This has to stop!
18. Postpone Proposed Kennel license By-Law extension
This petition has been created as a result of citizen initiated concern about the proposed By-law No. 2002-189 with respect to kennels, and to make our Ottawa City Councillors & the Mayor aware of this.
The proposed by-law, as written, will create much hardship for many dog/cat oriented operations in the Ottawa region.
The City has been working on this By-law since 2002 and has now only given your citizens 8 working days from publication to finish.
There is insufficient time for citizens to get our comments to you and also for your staff to assess those comments.
19. Save Our Welsh Cats & Dogs from Death on the Roads
FOR WELSH RESIDENTS ONLY
We wish to petition the Welsh Government to make it legal, once again, for electronic collars linked to radio containment fencing -(sometimes known as invisible boundary fencing or hidden fencing) to be used by Welsh pet owners to protect their companion pets from death on the roads or from other dangers such as chasing sheep.
In June 2011, more than a year after the ban to outlaw these fences became law in Wales, a former RSPCA Chief Vetinerary Officer & former Vetinerary Director of the Dogs Trust was found to be using these protective fences privately at his home in England to protect his own cat and dog.
Can there be a finer endorsement of the hidden fences' safety and efficiency ?
We are supported by Professor Tim Gruffydd-Jones of the Department of Clinical Vetinerary Science at the University of Bristol.
After several years of being legal in Wales, this practice of using boundary fencing linked to electronic collars was made a criminal offence in 2010 with up to 51 weeks in prison or a £20,000 fine for anyone found to be using this domestic containment system to keep their pets safe.
In the Draft legislation of 2009, the Government recognised then, that these hidden radio fences were entirely different from dog training collars and excluded the hidden fencing via a clause to allow continued use under certain criteria.
However, a blanket ban was implemented at the last minute on BOTH as "there could be considerable difficulty in policing the exceptions" i.e. it would be easier for the officials to adminster the law.
So our cats and dogs have to die on the roads to make the officials' work easier !
There were only 51 respondents in the 2nd public consultation, 29 for a blanket ban and 14 against. A small majority of 15 people.
In the 3rd and final public consultation, there were only 18 respondents, 9 for a blanket ban and 5 against.
A tiny majority of 4 people and from these results, a blanket ban was implemented across the whole of Wales.
Hardly a democratic choice by the people of Wales !
These invisible boundary fences or hidden fences are freely available and widely used in England, Scotland, and Irelands North and South...it is only in Wales that they are banned.
This campaign and petition is only for the reinstatement of electronic collars linked to hidden fences/containment fencing.
For comprehensive information about this, please see our Facebook page "Save Our Welsh Cats and Dogs from Death on the Roads" or www.facebook.com/saveourwelshpets and follow our occasional updates on Twitter @saveourwelshpet
20. Unsuitable Owners not Dangerous Dogs
The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 was introduced in response to various incidents involving particular breeds.
These incidents received huge tabloid attention and public concern over the keeping and breeding of all dogs which were classed as the same type.
The following breeds which are of pedigree or crossed with are now classed as Dangerous Dogs
Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro.
21. Boycott Northern Ireland for Lennox
*added a link* *added a extract from the owners*
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/332181
Dangerous dog is put to sleep following final court decision.
11 July 2012
Belfast City Council confirmed today that the dog Lennox, an illegal pit-bull terrier type, has been humanely put to sleep. This was in accordance with the Order of the County Court which was affirmed by the Northern Ireland Court of Appeal.
Whilst there is an exemption scheme to which dogs of this type (pit-bull terrier type) may be admitted as an alternative to destruction, there were no such measures that could be applied in this case that would address the concerns relating to public safety. The Council`s expert described the dog as one of the most unpredictable and dangerous dogs he had come across.
Over the past two years, Council officials have been subjected to a sustained campaign of abuse including threats of violence and death threats. The Council has been in ongoing contact with the PSNI in relation to that.
The Council regrets that the court action was necessary but would emphasise that the safety of the public remains its key priority.
*Below follows an extract from Lennox's owners:
"Lennox is a loveable 5 year old family member. He's an American Bull dog cross that we have owned since he was a little pup. On Wednesday the 19th May 2010 he was taken from our family home by Belfast City Council as they believe he falls under the dangerous dogs act for Northern Ireland. The Council, without seeking any proper professional guidance declared Lennox to be a breed of "Pitbull Type" and so they wish to kill him simply because he has the appearance of said breed. Lennox has never attacked anyone or anything yet the council have removed him from his home where he lives with my wife, myself, our 12 year old Daughter and his soul mate Juicy, a 2 year old female boxer. Belfast City Council are pressuring our family to sign him over to them to be destroyed however we feel the need to fight his case, he cannot speak but we will be his voice! If this was a human we would declare this racism. We ask every kind hearted person for your support, don't let them murder him."
22. Ban vicious dogs
Currently if you or your dog are attacked by a breed of dog NOT on the dangerous dogs list, you had better make sure you have insurance for yourself and your dog!
My daughter and I were bitten in an attack by two staffs who also savaged one of our dogs and injured our other dog while the owner stood by and made NO attempt to call her dog back or get it back on its lead.
We have been informed that this is not an offence as they are Not on the dangerous dogs list!
23. Stomp Out the 70% Euthanasia Rate at the Hendricks County Animal Control Shelter (Danville, Indiana)
Stomp Out the 70% Euthanasia Rate at the Hendricks County Animal Control Shelter!! (Danville, IN)
Hello,
I grew up in Hendricks County, Indiana and attended Plainfield High School. A few of my classmates, along with other animal lovers, want to thank you in advance for reading what our Petition is all about! If you are reading this, you are more than likely an animal lover.
We've all heard that one person can make a difference. Well, imagine if all of us could work together, by signing this petition, to make a huge difference at this shelter to save thousands of animal’s lives!
You may have seen some recent controversy in the news about the Hendricks County Animal Control Shelter. I’ve been working with a couple organizations (Allies for All Animals & The Hendricks County Humane Society) for the last 6 months trying to make a real difference for the animals in Hendricks County.
The 2011 Shelter Report received from the Hendricks County Commissioners show an unusually high euthanasia rate of 70%!! That is completely unacceptable!
Chief Animal Control Officer Mary Ann Lewis has run the county shelter for the past 21 years. She admitted on Channel 6 News to an 82% euthanasia rate (which includes owner requested euthanasia, as well)! In my opinion that is 21 years too long for the same Animal Control Chief to euthanize thousands of animals in Hendricks County!! It is time for this to stop! It is time for a change!
This shelter has one of the highest euthanasia rates in the state of Indiana! This is embarrassing for the taxpaying citizens of Hendricks County!
The shelter is currently only open 10-4pm M-F, and they are only open on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays for very short hours. These hours are not convenient to the working citizens of Hendricks County! It does not give the adoptable animals a chance to find their forever home!
At the present time, the dogs are not allowed to be walked or even go outside! They are not allowed to be taken out of the shelter to adoption events. The cats are not allowed to touch the floor in the facility. The facility currently does not have a quarantine area for the cats. The intake room is being used for the dogs. And worst of all, the kennels are hosed down and cleaned WITH the animals in them! Those are all completely unacceptable practices in this new age of animal welfare!
The Shelter recently started a Volunteer Program, but the volunteer handbook that states you must do volunteer activities such as yard maintenance or sitting at tables with pictures of the adoptable animals for a massive150 hours before you could ever touch a animal at the shelter!! Most shelters allow volunteers to work with the animals almost immediately after a few hours of training. Certainly not 150 hours! Clearly this shelter does not want outsiders in their building.
Our tax dollars pay for the employee’s salaries, the building, and the utilities in this county-run facility. So what we want our county shelter to be should matter to the County Commissioners who are responsible for running the shelter.
We have presented a proposal for a Shelter Director to take over the daily duties of the shelter. This would include finding homes for the adoptable animals, calling rescue groups, setting up foster homes, and forming a much-needed, more reasonable volunteer program.
The shelter currently has an “Animal Control Chief" that runs the facility. And she runs the shelter with an “animal control” mentality only. That is to protect the citizens from “vicious, attack” animals. When in fact, very few of these animals are vicious. They have only been displaced from their homes through no fault of their own. Yet they are treated like inmates!
We believe the Chief Animal Control Officer can work out of the Sheriffs office, or out of a van. This is the way Hamilton County handles it. Their Animal Control Officers do not have anything to do with the running of the shelter, nor are they housed at the facility. They simply pick up strays and drop them at the shelter.
A new Shelter Director would check for microchips on strays, look for owners of lost pets, contact rescue groups, organize foster families, use the Canine Express (a train which takes animals to shelters who presently don't have a lot of adoptable animals), advertise the adoptable animals to increase awareness (Hendricks County Flyer, PetFinder.com and all available online adoption sites), be in charge of a volunteer program, hold fundraising events to raise money for vaccinations and medical supplies, and take animals out to adoption events. The Shelter Director would be responsible for making sure the animals are socialized, evaluated, groomed, vetted, with the help from volunteers.
Problems with the Shelter have been a news item on rtv6, Indiana News. See:
I will try to post my letter here from the director Mary Ann Lewis, and the assistant to commissioners, Mike Graham "firing" me from my 10 plus hours a week, volunteer position posting all the animals on line, and caring too much about the animals welfare I received recently. I asked too many questions for them... hmm Jenny
Dear Schnauzer breeders,
I’m writing to you today as a concerned Schnauzer breeder. Please let me know what you think about the following issue:
Some members of the German PSK want to change the standard of our breeds regarding the tail. As all of them aren’t breeders, I’d like to know what you think about it.
The new standard will say that tails that are too long, carried above the back or at the side will be a mistake, a curled tail will be a great mistake; which means that dogs with those tails will have bad show results, as they can’t be judged as “excellent” any more. And dogs with curled tails will be taken out of breed automatically, as heavy mistakes must lead to disqualification of these dogs on dog shows. Some of our best dogs will be taken out and judged as “bad dogs”!
In my opinion it is absolutely not necessary to change the standard. As those persons tell that foreign breeders want these changes, please let me know your opinion. Write us short statement that says that you don’t want any changes to the standard. Thank you very much!
Viele Grüße / Yours
Edith Schön
25. Join With the AKC to Protect Responsible Small Breeders
Join with the American Kennel Club to express your concerns about the harsh and unintended consequences that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s proposed regulations (RIN 0579-AD57) to redefine “retail pet store” would have on responsible small and hobby breeders.
Under the proposed regulations, breeders - who maintain more than four “breeding females” and who sell even one puppy sight unseen, by any means (including online, by mail or by telephone), would now be regulated as commercial breeders by the USDA. The effect of these proposed regulations would be to take away the public’s opportunity to obtain puppies from some of our nation’s top breeders who in many cases, have dedicated their lives to breeding for health, breed type and temperament.
Under current law, the federal Animal Welfare Act exempts from federal oversight “retail pet stores,” which sell puppies directly to a final customer for use as pets. This exemption means that most non-commercial small or hobby breeders do not have to be licensed and regulated by the USDA. The proposed rule rescinds the exempt “retail pet store” status of anyone selling pets at retail to buyers who do not physically enter the breeder’s facilities in order to personally observe the animals available for sale.
The rule also requires anyone who owns more than four “breeding females” and sells puppies, cats or other small/exotic pets “sight unseen,” by any means, to be licensed, regulated and inspected as a USDA commercial breeder.
The AKC shares the USDA’s concern about substandard Internet puppy sellers that operate outside the current regulations. However, the unintended consequences of this proposed rule create unreasonable hardships on small hobby breeders. This rule could threaten the future of a vast number of small responsible dog breeders and the very existence of some rare breeds in the United States.
The rule creates an unfair burden on small breeders who may depend on the ability to place dogs very selectively in known situations without physically meeting with the purchaser at the specific time of sale. Likewise, many hobbyists are comfortable purchasing an animal sight-unseen based on known pedigrees, bloodlines, previous relationships or personal knowledge of each other’s facilities and programs. Such scenarios are particularly common and necessary for breeders and fanciers of rare breeds. The proposed rule does not make allowances if the purchaser is willing to sign a waiver of an in-person sale requirement.
It is unreasonable to expect small breeders, who may keep a handful of intact females in their homes, to be able to meet exacting USDA commercial kennel engineering standards that were never intended for home environments. Other pre-existing restrictions such as local ordinances, insurance or licensing may also prevent hobbyists from adapting their facilities.
26. Give Human Education a priority over Dog Legislation
Legislation for the control of dogs and the safety of the public has been in force in the U.K. for a number of years.
The legislation is rarely enforced and few steps are taken to protect the general public. Owning a family dog has many health and social advantages for a large number of families, but a rapidly increasing number of irresponsible owners have resulted in the number of attacks by dogs on people increasing at an alarming rate. The majority of irresponsible owners fall into the youth category who purchase large, status type dogs with little or no thought for the safety of others including immediate family members. They are not aware of how to train their dogs or why this is necessary.
The result is that the dogs can cause serious injuries and even death. Tragically, the majority of those injured or killed are children and the numbers increase each year with nothing being done to prevent it. We believe that current legislation will not be enforced to the level required to ensure its’ success and the solution to this dangerous problem is through education. All children should be educated in schools to comprehend responsible dog ownership.
It is especially important that all children are aware of the dangers and how to act in an appropriate manner in order to keep themselves safe around dogs.
27. Stop funding/conducting animal experiments
Argument 1#
"Animal testing is vital to medical advancement".
This is completely untrue. Vaccinations have been produced for one of the most well-known and tragic type of illness; cancer. A vaccination against one type of cancer was tested on a small group of volunteers. As far as I am aware, none of the volunteers were harmed in testing process.
There are now so many charities that do not fund or conduct animal experiments, such as The Age-Related Diseases and Health Trust, that do not test on animals so it would be possible for the Alzheimer's Society to stop funding/conducting animal experiments. These organizations carry out their research on alternatives such as fake organs and computer models. Not only do these methods save thousands of animals, but some scientists also say that they are more reliable. If all scientists used these methods, more people would be saved.
Argument 2#
"Animal testing has saved thousands of lives, including those of diabetics".
Although animal-tested medicines have saved people before, these were mostly invented in the days when there were not as many alternatives to the use of animals. Even these could have been tested on volunteers and donated body parts.
Research into treatments for Diabetes was in fact held up by animal testing. If animal testing had of been banned 200 years ago, Diabetics would have benefited enormously. A doctor found out that Diabetes was linked to high and low amounts of sugar in peoples' diets by looking at the urine of Diabetics, not by performing animal experiments.
Argument 3#
"Lab animals are well-cared for and the scientists try to minimise their suffering".
Although there are laws to protect animals used in experiments, these laws are so poorly-enforced that they might as well not exist. Many of them exist only to protect scientists from animal cruelty charges. Scientists that work in these labs can, in most cases, legally: cut animals open, gas them, shoot them, burn them, drop chemicals into their eyes, irritate their skins, give them electric shocks, deprieve them of food, water and/or sleep, take them away from their mothers when they are too young and force-feed them chemicals. Animals may be forced to live in barren cages until they are either killed or die due to the experiments in which they are tortured.
Believe it or not, some people illegally kidnap animals to sell them for vivisection.
So if you have ever lost an animal companion, there is a risk that he or she might have been captured and sold for vivisection. Although most of the animals tortured are bred specifically for use in experiments, some of them are illegally taken from the people who love and care for them.
28. Petition to BC Transit to allow leashed dogs on their buses
This petition is to try and get BC Transit to change their pet policy to enable medium and bigger dogs to travel on leash with their owners on buses, so that among other things they can be taken to the vet, as allowed in many other cities including Toronto, Ontario and London, England.
Esquimalt resident Robert Ganton is collecting names on a petition asking B.C. Transit to allow leashed dogs, other than service dogs, on its buses.
29. Stand up for the American Pit Bull Terrier
It started out in the 1980's blaming the Rottweiler, then it went to the Doberman, then the German Shepherd, and now discrimination is aimed at the American Pit Bull Terrier. It has gone further than we could have imagined.
More people and States are now trying to ban the Pit Bull Terrier from being allowed as a pet. The Pit Bull started out as "The Nanny dog", then went to the "Military Dog". The Pit Bull was the caretaker and Pet of Helen Keller. There is a Pit Bull named Stumpy that saved a whole platoon in WWII.
Yes there have been attacks cause by Pit Bulls, but there have also been attacks by many other breeds every year. The Pit Bull is a wonderful, loving, loyal, and caring breed. The Pit Bull has NEVER been bred to be vicious against human beings.
Take a moment and look at how wonderful the American Pit Bull terrier is. They have been loyal and loving to us, now it is our turn to be there for this Beautiful Breed of Dog.
Please help me Spread the word to help these defenseless precious angels. Yes I am only 19, but I do know that I will stand up and fight for what I believe in.
30. Gibraltar Dog Lovers Against Breed Specific Legislation
In 1997, an amendment was made to the Dangerous Dogs Act, after years of pressure from campaigners and welfare groups, to stop the killing of certain 'illegal' breeds, known as the 'Breed Specific Legislation'. Even this does not stop the killings of these dogs, as it is very difficult to prove whether a dog has in fact 'committed an offence' in a court of law.
Years have passed, and still this legislation remains, in Gibraltar, when few, if any, of these 'certain types of pit bulls', have acted angrily or committed an offence under this act. It is time for this legislation to be looked into and amended, to allow the importation of these types of breeds.
We believe that dogs, irrelevant of breed, are not to blame, only owners who do not understand or care are responsible for their actions.
