1. Seek Justice and Equality for Actively Involved Parents
This petition is for the parents who play an active and vital role in their child or children’s lives. Unfortunately, for unmarried parents, the laws currently in place in Arkansas and states like it presumably assign one parent to be a “custodial parent” and the other as a “noncustodial parent”, without making a reasonable assessment to determining whether this is the best decision to make in regards to the child or children.
Therefore, this injustice causes an inequality for parents who are present in their child or children’s live by way of multiple levels of support. The laws possibly do this because traditionally one parent is the breadwinner while the other raises the child or children, but times change, and with the change of times comes a need for change of laws. Not all laws from yesteryear are applicable to today and the future, and that is why this petition urges lawmakers to revise statues such as “Arkansas Code of 1987 Title 9: Family Law (Subtitle 2: Domestic Relations).” to reflect the 21st century. If both parents play an equal role, then both parents should have equal parenting rights protected by the law, which leads this discussion to the concept of shared parenting.
Shared parenting refers to a collective agreement in child custody in which the care of the children is equal or substantially shared between the biological parents. More and more parents today are moving away from the traditional custody agreements that consist of a “custodial parent” and “noncustodial parent”. Instead, they are opting for shared parenting. In a shared (or joint) parenting agreement, both parents have almost equal physical custodial time with their children. Moreover, both parents are responsible for making the important decisions in their child's life. Shared parenting is a valiant attempt by both parents to be involved in their child's life for the benefit of the child. Shared parenting heavily involves both parents and does not mean that one parent has the kids almost all of the time with occasional visits to the other parent. This type of parenting is one of the best ways for unmarried parents to work together in the best interest of their child or children, especially when both parents are truly active in their child or children’s lives. Having both parents in a child’s life as true equals is in the best interest of the child. Out with the “Custodial/Noncustodial” and in with “Equal, Fair, and Balanced Parenting”. Shared parenting is more effective than ¾ parenting from one parent and ¼ parenting from the other and vice-versa. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule when one parent is inactive or significantly less active in a child’s life.
Shared parenting is great if both parents do it! Although, there has been a dark past of have the experience of one parent not being in their lives as much as they should or at times not being in their lives period. Those individuals most definitely do not need or deserve same rights as a true parent who is there day in and day out and actively present in their child’s life. Individuals who are not mature enough to be responsible parents make it difficult for those who are. This cause some of them fight back through use of the court system, but can end up being futile because the burden of proving that the other parent is “unfit” is left up to them to substantiate although the point of “fit” or “unfit” is not necessarily an issue. A hardworking parent who has a major part in their child’s life should not have to resort to such madness only to possibly secure their rights as a parent.
The law should be in the best interest of the child, and having both parents in a child’s life as true equals when both play pivotal roles in the child’s life is in the best interest of the child.

LELOUCH-LOVER
On a Wednesday morning on August 5th, 2009, numerous students of Henderson County High School were sent home or otherwise disciplined for violations of the dress code, including but not limited to: Piercings, tattoos, and torn clothing. The reasoning behind this code, as stated by the staff of said school, is because such things are a distraction to classmates. This is, quite simply, untrue. All of these things are commonplace in this day and age, therefore lacking any significant ability to distract peers.
What is incredibly distracting, however, are arms wrapped in duct tape to cover tattoos, pants with shiny silver duct tape patchjobs to cover the slightest of tears and adhesive bandages covering eyebrows, lips, and other piercings. Far more distracting, and in opposition to the educational purpose of the school, is having to sit in an office for hours on end - missing classtime in the process - over something so trivial as a torn pair of pants rendering one's kneecap visible.
For the past four years, such things as piercings and tattoos have been allowed. The same applies to torn clothing (granted, within limits) and colored hair. For four years, these things provided no significant distraction. It is a far more potent distraction to have the students all wrapped in tape and bandages - and it certainly doesn't help them focus on academic work if they're all riled up over the dress code rules.
Taking into consideration the counterproductive nature of the current dress code, as outlined in the preamble of this petition, I move that the school board review these rules of dress as quickly as possible and REMOVE them. The distractions of the school's so-called "disciplinary procedures" are far greater than the distraction of a couple of rings in one's lip - a sight which is all too common to students these days, thus bringing its alleged status as a "distraction" into serious question. Henderson County High School is a public school - not a private school - and therefore should not have such strict guidelines. The sole role, in practice if not in theory, of this code is angering students and parents alike, keeping students out of class to deal with petty "disciplinary" issues, and rendering the HCHS building void of any and all physical signs of individuality and free expression.
Such trivial obsession over the students' physical appearance distracts from their education. Pulling students out of important classes for hours at a time does nothing to prepare them for the real world nor does it allow them to complete any work. If you check the planners students are required to carry, there are two to five lines - possibly one full page, tops - discussing the school's standards and goals for education. The remaining ten or twenty pages related to school conduct are devoted mostly to discipline - at least three pages of which is in regard to the dress code. A school is supposed to be an educational establishment, not a conformity-obsessed discipline center.
The staff and school board - along with whoever else aided in the formation of these new rules - clearly have their priorities out of order. As many members of the HCHS staff have pointed out themselves, there will be plenty of time to take part in a uniformed work-collective during one's career, so why eliminate what individuality is available during school years?
4. Request for Freedom of Appearance
This petition is reserved to students, parents (or guardians) and teachers of Livingston Parish schools. All signers are subject to investigation of their actual registration to a Livingston Parish school.
Since the beginning establishment of Livingston Parish education of Louisiana, USA, a strict and demanding dress code has been in effect and taken it's toll on students, parents and instructors alike. This petition has the intention of giving the school bored the idea to at least consider removing or lowering the standards of the uniformed dress code of Livingston Parish. The suggested dress code is as fallows.
1. Shoes must be worn
2. No excessively large, torn, or worn-out clothing will be permitted.
3. No patches, emblems, or advertisements of a suggestive, indecent or obscene nature will be allowed.
4. Clothing designed for an undergarment shall not be worn as an outer-garment.
5. Clothing must cover the shoulder of students with a garment of at least three (3) inches in width. No muscle shirts, basketball jerseys, tank tops or spaghetti strap tops will be permitted unless worn as a vest-type garment over a shirt with sleeves.
6. Halter tops will not be permitted.
7. Shorts and skirts may be worn if the length extends to the tip of the longest finger with the arm fully extended downward.
8. Midriffs, cleavage, or backs will not be exposed.
9. Underclothing will be worn.
10. See-through clothing will not be permitted.
11. Headdress will not be worn in buildings.
12. Taps, cleats, or spikes on shoes will not be permitted.
13. Any style of clothing tending toward immodesty will be prohibited.
14. Facial hair must be neatly trimmed.
15. Gang related apparel or any apparel conveying racial overtones is prohibited.
16. Clothing, hats, caps or other personal property which advertises or promotes the use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs shall be prohibited.
17. Clothing, hats, caps or other personal property which conveys obscene, lewd, or vulgar comments, messages or portraits shall be prohibited.
18. Clothing, hats, caps or other personal property which portray sexual double entrendres shall be prohibited.
19. Clothing, hats, caps or other personal property which portray or include comments which are harassing, threatening or demeaning to a certain group of people shall be prohibited.
20. All pants, shorts, skirts, etc., shall be worn with the waistband or beltline around the waist and above the hips.
21. Clothing, hats, caps or other personal property which shall cause a disruption to the learning process or which serves as a hazard to the safety of students shall be prohibited.
22. Anything not covered in the code that is distracting to either a teacher or student should be brought to the attention of the administration.
23. For the safety and well being of all students and staff, coats, jackets, windbreakers, vests, and other similar outer garments which extend below the knee in length shall be prohibited.
24. Students shall not wear any attire which shall impinge upon the health, safety, and welfare of the students and employees within the district.
25. Extreme hair coloring and bizarre hairstyles (such as the Mohawk longer than 6" in length) can be considered detracting to the student body and will not be tolerated.
26. Students with more than ordinary amounts of pockets are subject to search by school officials.
27. Chains, spikes and other potential weapons are not permitted by the dress code and can be confiscated by school officials.
In other words, there will be no dictation of the color or type of the shirts, nor will shirts be required to be tucked in or belts be worn at all times. Hair can be worn in any fashion, however can not be covering the eyes during lecture or conversation between student and instructor as a sign of respect. Extreme hair coloring may distract the learning environment, and would not be tolerated by this dress code. The initial idea behind this new dress code written by the students for the students will create a whole new learning experience for it's pupils. The current dress code adds stress and actually makes it harder to find clothes rather than make everything simpler as intended.
Students, however, should be trained in a uniform fashion at a younger age. This will prepare them for whats waiting as an adult and get them used to the idea of being prepared for their futures. Older students who have already learned this lesson would have it in their best interest to express themselves in a positive way through clothing.
By denying the students' choice; rather than allowing their ability to choose, actually harnesses the students mind to a negative state, giving the children the feeling of being oppressed and controlled. The learning environment should be stimulating and an enjoyable place to arrive to every day. Many students have dropped out just for their ability to dress the way they choose. Allowing students more freedom by passing this new dress code may stop drop-outs tremendously.
Students who harass, segregate or make another feel inferior due to the clothes worn by another is subject to severe punishment under this new dress code. The freedom to dress as wished can be revoked from constantly troublesome students.
The message we, the student body, are sending is this,
"As a student of a registered Livingston Parish school, I am obligated to express my opinion and sign this petition in support of it, regardless of its approval or disapproval by the school board. My opinion is as fallows, we as children live in an age where choice becomes more limited everyday, the farther in life we go. When I graduate from high school, I will either go to college or start working and as a working citizen, I will be subject to dress as society wishes. My childhood should be about freedom, and let me be just what I want to be before the world of work and industry chooses for me. I swear, by signing this petition, that I want my voice to be heard. I want to make a difference and make my learning environment more pleasurable for me and my fellow students."
The message the concerned parents of Livingston Parish students is as fallows, "We, the parents of a presently attending student of Livingston Parish, agree that a child should have the right to choose how he or she is to be portrayed in the learning environment. I understand that my child could be harassed or secluded by the way he or she chooses to dress and my child accepts the consequences. No complaints will be made as I so solemnly swear by signing this petition to help make Livingston Parish more appealing to the student body and my child in particular."
The instructors that object to the current dress code agree to the fallowing statement, "I am a registered educator of a registered Livingston Parish school, and as such I see that there is little to no harm in students choosing the way he or she dresses. I feel that my instructing within and outside my classroom will not be negatively impacted by the new dress code."
As such, this petition will remain in effect until the limit of signatures is reached to convince the school board that this is a supported idea by students, parents and staff of Livingston Parish.
Please consider our feelings towards this matter and God bless.
In California, there are special laws protecting the free speech rights of students in public and private high school (California Education Code, Sections 48907 and 48950)
We have the right to freedom of expression.
We have the right to organize a peaceful rally or demonstration at our school.
A new dress code has not been proven to improve the learning environment and violates our freedom of expression.
If we all speak out as one voice, we can help change FUSD for the better.

6. My school wants us all to wear school uniforms...
My school wants to force its students to wear the same boring uniform. At the
moment the school is quite liberal about what we wear but as of September 2007
the dress code will change.
We will be forced to where dull uniforms consisting of a black suit, white shirt and black trousers. This will bring a stop to our self-expression. No one wants the new uniforms in our schools and none of the teachers will listen to us..... Please help!
