61. Online Protest Against The Suspension Of Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand

On 29th October, the BBC suspended radio and TV celebrities Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand from broadcasting their shows pending investigation to prank calls aired on Brand's Radio 2 program.

The calls, which was intended as a jokes, were left on the answer phone of actor Andrew Sachs, who had agreed to do an interview on the show.

There were several complaints from the public due to Ross's swearing, rather than the content of the calls, until a Sunday newspaper stepped in and blew the situation out of proportion. Complaints to Ofcom then went through the roof from people who more than likely only heard about this through the media, rather than listeners of the program itself. Fuddy duddies who are missing their funny bones.

Now it's not just the media setting on Brand and Ross's show, but MPs who obviously have nothing better to do than trying to censor a couple of celebrity jokers, while the economy goes down the pan, people are being made redundant, we have the highest unemployment in years, banks are going bust etc etc.

Ross and Brand have both apologised for their actions, this should have been an end to it, but instead they have both been pulled from the air.

Has everyone lost their sense of humour?

62. Bring Back The Russell Brand Show

Russell Brand has resigned from his BBC radio show "The Russell Brand Show" His reason for leaving is that he feels that the show is not making people "happy" anymore.

Or though there is one mistake on his and Johnathan Ross's part he still makes us laugh and makes us happy.

The whole thing has been blown greatly out of proportion by the media, as despite the figure being quoted in its thousands, only two complaints were received about the show, both for Ross's use of an expletive.

Since then, the media have stirred up uncalled for and unnecessary amounts of controversy, considering the dialogue used would be water off a ducks back to viewers of many comedy shows e.g. Little Britain.
What's more, listeners were warned about possibly offensive language and content.

The Sony Award winning Russell Brand show originated on BBC 6 Music before moving to take the 21:00-23:00 Saturday slot as Radio 2's showpiece.

It has been one of the most successful of recent times and is certainly one of the funniest and really does brighten up the days of many people, with regular Co-host Matt Morgan, poet laureate Mr Gee and regular guest, Oasis star, Noel Gallagher.

The show has attracted over 400,000 listeners live or even 2 million (depending on which source you believe) and many more via podcast, for which it has dominated the charts on iTunes.

For the show's regular items, Nanacdotes, Pin pin, 'Gay', the jingle race war, Mr Gee's poems and the two hosts, Russell Brand and Matt Morgan, as well as former hosts and friends, Mr Nibbs, Trevor Lock and Christophe the Fish !

64. Replace Jonathan Ross with Fawlty Towers

On the 18th October 2008 television and radio presenters Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand made several prank telephone calls to 78 year old actor and broadcaster Andrew Sachs.

In a subsequent "I'm sorry.. but it was funny.." apology the puerile pair couldn't even show some sincerity for the "I slept with your granddaughter" jokes left on Mr Sachs answer phone.

65. Dignity and Respect for the Filipino Worker

There is now a significant Filipino population in the United Kingdom. Over the past twenty years, the number of Filipinos living and working in the UK has increased by more than 833% from roughly 18,000 in 1986 to more than 150,000 by 2006. Of this number, about 70% live in Greater London area.

The Filipino community works in a variety of sectors, ranging from IT, aviation, education, hospitality sector (hotels, restaurants and casinos) and healthcare, chefs, and house managers. Increasingly, Filipinos have been recruited to the UK in significant numbers. Over the past five years, thousands have been recruited for the hospitality and healthcare sectors.

Perhaps the Filipino community is best known for the contribution it makes to the healthcare sector. Filipino nurses are consistently recognized for their high standards of professionalism. In the past eight years, more than 45,000 Filipinos were recruited into the health service, most of whom are nurses serving in the National Health Service while the remainder are working in the independent healthcare sector – mostly in private nursing homes.

Equally well received are the thousands of domestic workers who are housekeepers, cleaners and nannies. They are often employed by the members of the British establishment. Young professional women entrust their children to be looked after by Filipina nannies. Filipino domestic workers are well known to be hard-working, trustworthy and responsible.

Almost all of these domestic helpers are well educated with most of them having a degree-qualification as their background. Hence their high-demand as preferred employees by various sectors of the international society living in London.

A survey conducted amongst a limited sample of Filipinos living in the UK at present yielded some interesting findings:

65% of Filipinos are nurses and/or in the allied medical fields.
More than 10% are in domestic service.
A growing number of entrepreneurs of about 5%.
10-20% of the second-generation youths has gone to university or are still finishing university courses. Some of them have also become known as 'celebrities' due to their high profiles as models, actresses or musicians.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS MESSAGE TO ALL?

"On 26 September 2008 at 9 p.m., BBC 1 aired the comedy series Harry and Paul starring Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse. The opening scene showed Paul seated on a chair on his front lawn, while still in his pyjamas. A young Asian-looking female was shown gyrating in front of him in a lascivious manner. The postman arrived to ask Harry, Paul's friend, what was going on. Harry told him that he is trying to see if his ‘Filipina maid' can seduce Paul who obviously looks depressed.

Harry then continued to shout instructions to the young girl and to Paul to 'hump' the Filipino maid. He remained unmoved while the girl even played with his hair. On further instructions from Harry, she continued to gyrate sexually in front of Paul. Harry then instructed the maid to 'present her rear' which she did while wiggling her bottom in a seductive manner. The maid did not succeed in seducing Paul as he got up from his chair to go to his house. Harry shouted at the girl in an angry voice to leave as she was useless in doing her job. The girl walked towards the pavement looking upset. While walking on the pavement, the postman looked at her in a leering way and followed her. After catching up with her, he was shown to be whispering in her right ear and the girl then walked off with the postman."

While the BBC series did have a warning that the contents of the show may be of an offensive nature and has been rated 16, this particular sketch is completely disgraceful, distasteful and a great example of gutter humour. The sketch reflected insensitivity on the part of the producers and the British Broadcasting Corporation who did not seem to worry that by particularly naming the girl as a 'Filipina maid' and with her employer ordering her to openly behave in a lascivious manner toward the neighbour on the front lawn of a house where the public can watch what she was doing, was tantamount to racism and worst sexual abuse and exploitation of the hapless young Filipina domestic worker employee.

67. Posthumus OBE for Mr Bob Crampsey

Bob Crampsey served Scottish football for many years, starting with STV in the 1950's through to his retirement from BBC Sportsound in 2001.

He was an institution of our sport and an oracle of knowledge.

Throughout that time Mr Crampsey shared his enthusiasm for the game with many colleagues, viewers and listeners across the country, providing eloquent reporting and an infectious passion that is likely to have lived long in the memory of those to have experienced his wisdom.

While the attractiveness of Scottish football may have fluctuated over the years the calibre of Mr Crampsey's broadcasting remained sparkling, as attributed by the quote below

"this is as if this game was being played in a gigantic barn in total darkness. Occassionally, feeble gleams of cleverness from Kenny Miller, Paul Hartley and Craig Dargo illuminate the stigin(?) scene and then it lapses back into impenetrable murk. Both sides left the field at half-time to a chorus of well-deserved booing."

Having passed away on Monday 28th July 2008, football fans from around the country have expressed their respect and indeed gratitude for Mr Bob Crampsey's contribution.

Many have questioned why he was not awarded some formal recognition of service during his lifetime and the purpose of this petition is to, in some small way, rectify that error with a thoroughly deserved posthumous OBE.

74. BBC TV Formula 1 2009 Theme tune

We would like to appeal to Mr Mark Thompson, Director General of the BBC to make sure that the theme music to the 2009 and onward screening of Formula 1, is the much loved and historically acclaimed opening break from Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain'.

This would restore a much loved and faithful feel to the program and take us back to the BBC F1 glory days of the 70's and 80's. We appreciate we can't have Murray Walker or Ayrton Senna, but this would go a long way to both injecting a little nostalgia into the show for the vintage crowd as well as giving new F1 fans a taste of how life was 'back in the good old days'.

75. BBC Whitewashes Tibet

In 2008 the BBC shamefully broadcast, 'A Year in Tibet', as Tibetans, who took to the streets and demanded independence for their nation, were being gunned down by Chinese security forces.

Covert Photograph of Tibetans Shot at Ngaba-16th March 2008

"Eight dead bodies brought into Ngaba Kirti Monastery according to confirmed information received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. The bodies were brought in from the protest scene in Ngaba, Kham (so-called Sichuan Province). Sources say at least "30 Tibetans felled" after armed troops shot indiscriminately into the peacefully protesting Tibetans." (Released By TCHRD-Sunday, March 16, 2008 19:35]

Mr Richard Klein, BBC commissioned Mosaic Films and Sevenstones Media to produce 'A Year in Tibet', which BBC Four first screened at 21.00 on 6th March 2008, the final episode shown on 3rd April.

The series was produced and written by Mr. Peter Firstbrook. The locational Director was Ms. Sun Shuyun, a Chinese writer and film-maker. The film claims to be an 'observational documentary', following a year in the life of Gyantse, Tibet's third largest town.

The contents and style of this programme portray a seemingly contented and thriving culture, untouched it would appear by the odious excesses of Communist Chinese occupation. It is a troubling achievement for a film crew to document daily living in such circumstances, yet fail to include any reference to the cultural and political oppression, which has operated inside Tibet since China's invasion in 1950.

The timing of this series too was curious, coming just several months before Beijing launched the 2008 Olympic Games, an event which attracted international concern and oppostion relating to China's appalling human rights record, and its brutal suppression of the Tibetan and Uyghur people.

Such political realities do not feature in 'A Year in Tibet', which carefully avoids any issues of sensitivity by assembling a stereotypical and idyllic image of life inside Tibet. Internationally there is genuine and widespread concern at the plight of Tibet. Such opinion will be surprised and disappointed to note a film which lacks fundamental journalistic standards, such as balance, independence, accuracy and critique.

In 2009 the communist Chinese regime allowed it to be screened across China, thus confirming the film's propagana credentials. More here: http://tibettruth.wordpress.com/2009/07/19/communist-china-to-screen-bbc-whitewash-of-tibet/

76. Against Sanctions and banning Kenya from Commonwealth

Some Human rights groups, Some international organisations, the opposition and sections of Kenyans abroad are calling for the imposition of sanctions against Kenya, banning Kenya from the commonwealth and discouraging Tourists from visiting Kenya. The reason given is to put an illegitimate government under pressure for allegedly rigging the elections.

The question to be asked as the British foreign secretary David Miliband in a BBC interview put it is, ….who does the sanctions help, who does the sanctions hurt and does it have the desired effect?

The effect of sanctions on Kenya is negative because putting the livelihoods of over 30 million Kenyans on the line to put the pressure on people who can endure even 50 years of sanctions does not solve our problems.

Kenya is made up of a government, the opposition and the citizens, imposing sanctions affects more of the citizens than it does a few individuals and hence poor Kenyans living on less than a dollar per day are robbed of the only dollar they have!

Poor Kenyans who have had enough of tribal violence, internal displacements and living in their own country in fear are condemned to “economic displacement”. By doing this, those imposing sanctions and displacing Kenyans economically will be partaking in the same vice they are preaching against.

Kenyans did their part, they voted peacefully. Going back to punish them instead of commending them is a grave breach of human rights. Sticking with us when things are fine and abandoning us when our house is on fire will be a clear indication of an insincere partnership. Due process and dialog should prevail!

We are not hearing calls for investigation and prosecution on crimes of those against who perpetrated ethnic killings and displacements on innocent Kenyans.

The effect of sanctions will be poverty, joblessness, and consequent crime, poor health, political and moral vulnerability aggregating the spread of HIV among other effects.

77. I Want a Match of the Day for Rugby

First established as a group on Facebook on October 29th 2007, it became clear after only one week and over 1,500 members that this was a subject the UK’s rugby lovers felt very strongly about. After 6 weeks, there were over 14,500 members.

What we all want to see is a ‘regular’ terrestrial TV slot dedicated to show highlights from the weekend’s rugby union action across the UK. All too often Rugby Special concentrated on the Guinness Premiership and I like many others, would like to see Magners League coverage as well as other aspects of the game itself.

Football has more than it’s fair share of coverage on Match of the Day, the repeat and Match of the Day 2, not to mention Football Focus and other round up programmes.

Ok, so football has a greater following and it’s all about viewing figures at the end of the day, but how many people are you realistically going to get tuning in to watch Rugby Special at midnight on a Sunday night or some of the other crazy times it was on?

Considering all of our 4 home nations are in the top 10 IRB World Rankings, no real effort is made to try and capture this audience and we need to prove to the BBC via our campaign petition and through your support spreading the word, that the UK rugby lovers have a voice.

The BBC:

  • holds rights to show highlights of the Guinness Premiership.

  • holds exclusive rights to show the Anglo-Welsh EDF Energy Cup.

  • holds joint rights to show the Celtic League, Wales, Ireland and Scotland's top league along with Setanta Sports.

  • BBC Sport produces the Welsh-language S4C's coverage of the Celtic League and EDF Energy Cup under the Y Clwb Rygbi brand.

Seeing as they have the rights to the highlights, the demand is there and we pay our TV licences, I feel we have a public right to make our voice heard.

87. Say YES to BBC America showing The Eurovision Song Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television programs in the world and last year celebrated its 50th anniversary. Nations from across Europe take part in the competition to find the best song each year and 2004 saw the introduction of a semi-final in order to cope with the increased number of entries.

In addition to being one of the longest running shows on television it is also one of the most watched and the introduction of an internet broadcast in 2006 boosted the already high viewing figures. However, although the show is available online this broadcast does not include the very British perspective of Terry Wogan’s commentary on the competition.

It is our belief that BBC America should show Eurovision in the format aired on the BBC in the UK to give insight into the competition to American Anglophiles and music fans, as well as providing the opportunity for British Ex-Pats to enjoy a well-loved spectacle.

90. Stop bad language in music on the radio

May 25, 2005

Hello, now i have been told by my 13yr old daughter that "everybody swears" ok that maybe, but why do we have to put up with it in music, especially RAP music? Yes i know i am going to get a "Mary Whitehouse" tag here, but what the heck. I also know that when music is played on the radio and it contains bad langusge, they play "radio edits" but half the time you can still figure out what they are saying!

My main gripwe is with BBC Radio1, i used to listen to it all the time, and i maybe getting old (34) but due to the ammount of "dodgy" tunes on the station, i rarely listen to it, mind you local commercial radio is nearly as bad.

I know that singers try to get their various messages over to the masses and bad language is a way of "shocking" people to listen to them, which is fine, but when they "radio edit" these tunes cant they do it any better?. There is one tune at the mo' by Gwen Stafani, which has got a lot of (shh) in it, (shh) in place of where in the normal song there is swearing, yet the other day, my 8yr girl wasd quite happily singing the chorus, and saying the shh, when she turns round to me and asks "Dad, what does she mean by its my SHH", obviously i had to make things up.
