1. Please Stop Burning Stray Animals

Many countries across the globe, the USA and the UK included*, have taken to killing stray animals to try and control the population, but Ukraine is BURNING these poor animals ALIVE. Yes, that's right, they are being taken from the streets, where they may well have dumped and abused and/or simply neglected by people, only to be burned alive.

Burning is an incredibly cruel way of killing an animal. The fire burns like acid against their bodies. They feel their skin get burned through and they may even see their own bones as well as other inside parts. They may even be forced to breath in smoke as they die slowly and in agony, polluting their lungs and making them choke and gasp for air.

This is totally unnecessary. Stray animals are not normally aggressive. In fact, you are more likely to get attacked by a dog that has a home and has been trained/or socialised incorrectly than by a healthy, sane stray dog or cat. If you still think that all strays are evil pests, I urge you to go and have a look around your local animal shelter. If you don't think you are brave enough, just remember that, even if there are aggressive/defensive animals there, they will be in pens so they will not be able to get out and attack you or anyone else.

After you have visited the shelter and seen how lovely some of the dogs and cats are, just think about the fact that at least 1/2 or even 3/4 of them may have been strays at one point. Also, try thinking about this fact; many stray animals have been adopted by loving families and have settled in and become very loyal, loving and affectionate companions, not to mention the fact that there have even been alleged cases of babies being cared for by stray dogs...

Stray animal populations can be controlled by adoption, by making them live happy, healthy and safe lives in rescues such as the Dogs Trust for the rest of their lives and by "capture-spay/neuter-and-release" programmes. They can also be deterred by guns being fired to scare them, guard dogs and they can be kept out of certain areas by the use of strong, high fencing that is put beneath the ground as well.

2. Save the Pigs

Signers, please be civil when you sign this petition. This school has already had quite a lot of abuse directed at it due to the pigs's plight and they do not need any more of this. Hate, abusiveness and rudeness will not get us anywhere with this campaign.

Peasenhall Primary School has bought three piglets as part of a project to teach children about how food is made and, presumably, about the food chain as well. The project has many other benefits, such as getting the children outside in the fresh air and having work together. However, there is one small downside. THE PIGS ARE GOING TO BE KILLED AND EATEN!

They were bought from a local farmer and have quite a nice pen but, unless the school halts its plans to send them to slaughter immediately, they will, probably, be packed up in a cramped, filthy truck. They may get a limb or more stuck in the door/s as they will, almost certainly, be packed with very little thought or care. They will then be taken on a journey that may mean that they will be given little or no food or water to a slaughterhouse, where they will, likely be paralysed using a mixture of Carbon Dioxide and air or some other inhumane method/s before having their throats cut. It may then take them minutes to die.

I would suggest that the school implants a project that will be about growing vegetable or even fruit produce instead. If the people who own the property are okay with this, they could even see about going down to a local farm or garden and help out there, for a learning project. At least that would mean that they weren't purposefully having innocent animals killed.

3. Stop Requiring Animal Testing

Animal testing is a cruel and barbaric practice that should be banned. Animals do not want to be tortured, locked up, neglected and abused any more than we do, so why should we do it to them?

Myth 1# "Animal testing is vital to save lives".

Animal testing actually kills more people than it saves because of the fact that animals have different bodies and genetic systems from us. Even animals that are very similar to us in terms of DNA, such as pigs and monkeys, are still too different for every result from tests on them to be entirely accurate.

For instance, chimpanzees are immune to HIV, Malaria and hepatitis. Aspirin causes birth defects in most lab animals, but it doesn't do this to people. Paracetamol is toxic to cats and grapes and raisins can cause kidney damage in dogs.

In fact, most so-called "medical" experiments that are done on animals are actually done with money in mind, not people. That is one of the main reasons why these misleading experiments are still performed.

If a drug is passed as safe due to animal tests, it is then often given to people. If a drug passes as dangerous and unsafe due to animal tests, it is often given to people anyway because even the drug companies often know that animals have different bodies and genetic systems from us. If a person takes it and then gets any really bad side effects, the company cannot be sued because they did do the safety tests.

Myth 2# "Lab animals are always treated kindly and looked after properly".

Although some may well be treated with kindness and cared for properly, many of them are not. In fact, during investigations, animal defenders have filmed horrifying scenes that should disgust us all.

Lab animals are often shot at, held against red hot metal plates, have boiling water poured over them, force-fed dangerous chemicals, cut open, gassed, have their brains damaged with severe blows to their heads, starved, locked up and have their skin irritated by various different substances.

Lab animals are also sometimes abused outside of the experiments. Laboratory workers have been filmed punching, slapping and shaking animals before.

Myth 3# "Animals do not feel pain, have emotions or help others".

This is probably one of the biggest lies, misunderstandings, of the century. Animals definitely DO feel pain, have emotions and help others. Anyone who believes that animals do not feel pain should go and kick a dog and then watch what happens. If animals could not feel pain or fear, how do you think they would survive out in the wild?

Animals definitely do have emotions. When you tell a dog off, they will often cower away because they know that you are angry with them. Anyone who has ever had or even stayed with a cat before will know that cats are definitely more likely to scratch and bite at certain points in time than others. How else can this be explained other than in the fact that they have moods like people do?

Also, time and time again have dogs been known to pine for their owners after they have died. Hachiko carried on going to wait at the train station for his master's return until about ten years after his master had died and Greyfriar's Bobby waited by his master's grave for at least ten years before he himself died, apparently of the same illness that had killed his master.

Dogs have even been known to pine for their people when they have only gone to work or gone out for a little while. Dog behaviourists and experts often call this, separation anxiety, but a lot of it is really just loneliness and boredom. How else do you explain the scenario of a person leaving for a while and returning to get complaints from his or her neighbours about his or her dog's barking and howling and then finding broken items and chewed up furniture all over their home?

Even wild animals have been known to help others of their own species, even if they are not directly related to them. Lionesses have been known to adopt baby antelopes, wild birds will often try to save their mates' lives and even vampire bats have been adopt other members of their own species. Chimpanzees have been known to save ducklings and at least one baby boy has been rescued by a gorilla before.

If these really did not care, why do you think they did these sorts of things? Why did they bother to help out here?

Myth 4# "There is no alternative to animal testing."

There are, nowadays, so many alternatives to animal testing that it need not be used any longer. Fake skin and organs, donated cells and body parts, studies of living people and computer models can all now be used, and these can produce results that are far more relevant and useful than those optioned through animal tests.

4. Landlords should allow pets

So many people are having to move out of their homes due to the bedroom tax in UK and they have to downsize and can't take their pets with them.

People have to move due to relationship break ups, lease ending and various other reasons and they have to move quick. Pets go into rescue every day because of landlords not allowing them. They should ask for more of a deposit and allow pets.

Some people can't have children and pets are their only substitute and in some cases that can't be helped; this is taken away from them.

5. Support BreedeValley SPCA

The BreedeValley SPCA is facing a major crisis. The National SPCA wants them to close their doors on the 10th of May 2013 already. Gerda Du Toit has launched a petition to stop this from happening.

The second request is to help the SPCA lower their debt. If you could find it in your heart to spare some money to help them, their bank details are:

Breedevallei DBV;. FNB, Takkode 200407; Rek 54330149913

If you know of a company (or own a company) who can perhaps sponsor a bit more, I'm sure the SPCA would be eternally greatful as will all the animals they help.

Once the Breedevallei SPCA closes its doors and there is no one to take care of all those animals and we finally realise what all they did, I don't want to be one of those people who says: "I wish someone had done something" when I can be one of those people now.

7. URGE EPA TO REMOVE D-LIMONENE FROM PET PRODUCTS!!

D-LIMONENE IS A DANGEROUS CHEMICAL TO OUR COMPANION PETS.

Dogs experiencing epidermal necrosis associated with d-limoene are usually in pain and systemically ill. Anemia and liver and kidney damage may also occur. Supportive care is usually essential until the condition resolves. Severe forms of this condition are similar in severity to what is seen in third degree burn victims, with extensive skin damage resulting in skin sloughing, depression, shock, coma and often death. See Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy XIII 1999. pp.556; Muller and Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology 1995; pp.590; In studies & cases from Journal of Venterinary Medicine, AVMA, EPA, NIH, CDC, WHO, NLM, TOXNET, PUBMED -- D-limonene's health effects on dogs and cats have documented to cause eye, skin and lung irritation in varying degrees, also exhibited hypothermia, tremors, paralysis, central nervous system effects, respiratory effects, behavioral changes, ataxia, agitation, seizures, liver & kidney failure, septicemia and other life threatening skin disorders. This chemical is being used to satisfy the "natural" marketing ploy for pet manufacturers. "Natural" does not mean harmless. Its benefits do not outweigh the harm it can do. People love their animals and they need to be made aware of this potentially life threatening chemical before another pet becomes so ill or dies.

Dog and cat owners deserve to know this type of knowledge. I experienced it first hand with my dog Ginger what illeffects d-limonene can cause. Even I as a doting pet owner never knew of this problematic chemical.

My dog Ginger cannot tell how much she suffered or her fear of almost dying, so I will.

8. Stop killing our poundies and give us answers - Blacktown Pound

What part of animal re-homing officer dont they get? How is it the first implemented program of the animal rehoming officer to kill 5 out of 7 dogs on the kill list?

The AWL uses that temperament test to help rehabilitate dogs now, 20 years ago they used these temperament tests just to kill dogs. Blacktown pound can NOT ignore rehabilitation and just kill. Nearly 2 years of no kill rate for dogs blown away by the one person who was meant to save them, do we want to stand by and watch while blacktown pound turns into another RSPCA type killing field? NO!

Protest will be held on Monday 18/03/2013 -9:00am

9. More pro-animal apps and less pro-hunting ones

If you have an iPhone, iPad or other Apple device, and search "hunting" under "apps", you will find loads of pro-hunting ones, and almost no anti-hunting apps.
Sport hunting is cruelty to animals. Period.

I can understand that some people, and some animals, need to hunt to survive, but hunting for fun or for profit is totally inexcusable and barbaric. We need more animal rights apps and less of those ones that promote cruelty, and at is why it is important for those of use who care about animals to buy pro-animal apps, sign this petition and send polite messages to Apple to spread compassion.

10. Universal Canine & Feline Welfare Protection

Current animal welfare acts in countries such as UK, USA and Australia have been reformed in the past 10 years and now go a long way towards protecting animals, however they do not go far enough and The Dog Express would like to see unity, standardization and a universal approach to animal welfare acts, especially where it concerns domesticated and working dogs.

We call for much tougher penalties and sentences when acts of cruelty, neglect and suffering are committed as 51 week jail sentences and £500 fines are not a deterrent to these kinds of people. We call for prison sentences with a minimum of 6 years where the death of a dog or cat is the result of neglect or cruelty and lifetime bans for any act causing unnecessary suffering.

We also call for sentences, fines and bans to be imposed on those who knowingly fail to report or stop any act of animal cruelty, as those who do nothing as just as accountable as those who commit the crimes.

11. Save the Mexican dogs

Several people have been attacked in Mexico, including a one-year-old child and a teenage girl, and stray dogs are being blamed for these attacks. However, there is not that much true evidence that the dogs actually are responsible.

They were tested for rabies, but the results were negative. They were also tested for traces of human DNA, but the results have not come back yet.
The dogs are all, apparently, very scared at the moment. Although it is likely that others of the same species may have been responsible for the attacks, it is unlikely that these dogs are the true killers.

However, some people still think that they were responsible and they are at risk of being put on death row. The killing of these animals is probably not necessary, so why should it be done, especially when there is so little evidence that they are responsible?

12. Bring the focus back on the animals, Animal Planet!

Recently, or perhaps a little longer than that by now, Animal Planet has been taking the focus off of the animals and onto people, using "surprisingly human" as their slogan. In many of these shows, animals have been displaced out of the spot light and become co-stars to humans, which doesn't sound like much of an 'animal planet' to me.

Literally every other channel in existence is about humans, animal planet is suppose to be the one place we can do to, to see something different.

I want the Animal Planet of my childhood back!

13. Help rural area animals

In rural areas people break the law and neglect their animals. The local animal shelter doesn't take in animals with fleas. People in rural areas don't feed, water, or give vet care to their animals. The animals get sick, roam around the neighbor hood, spread the disease, and then die.

People in rural areas believe they have a right to neglect their animals. The cats also overbreed and inbreed causing health problems in the kittens. Then the area gets over populated with cats.

14. No more cruelty to film animals

You may be shocked to discover that the American Humane Association's famous "No animals were harmed in the making of this movie" disclaimer does not protect film animals at all times; it only applies to actual making of the movie, not the training nor the animals' lives afterwards.

Animals have been beaten, had their skin and flesh torn, been neglected and confined to tiny tanks and cages, as well as hideous problems, due to this deadly loophole.

16. Stop the abuse of fireworks! legal and illegal!

In Trinidad and Tobago, the abuse of fireworks on special occasions such as Divali and New Years Day is becoming more and more of a menace.

Impromptu surveying of citizens both over the internet and face to face show that the ill effects of abuse of not just illegal fireworks such as "scratchbombs" but also legally available fireworks over an extended period of hours not just affects human beings negatively, but also causes significant ill effects to animals.

Listed among the complaints given by citizens are: increased anxiety attacks/ ill effects to those suffering from nervous disorders, increased number of accidental and on occasion, even intentional burns caused by the setting off of fireworks in close contact to human beings and animals. increased damage to homes and other places of abodes caused by setting off of fireworks in close proximity to such establishments, death of animals due to heart attacks caused by extensive fright due to the loud noise of activated fireworks.

These complaints were given on a widescale and were not limited to any one geographical area.

17. Petition Against Pet Shops Being able to Sell Live Animals

We are against animals being sold in pet stores, such as Pets at Homes or Pet Paradise, because:

- Most animals come from rodent farms, where they live in tiny, dirty accommodation and disease is spread quickly. This is in no way a moral way to breed. See: http://www.brecklagh.com/petshops.html

- Store staff are often untrained and give incorrect, appalling and dangerous advice. This leads to animals being treated badly, which goes against the Animal Welfare Act, the owner's duty: http://animalrights.about.com/od/animallaw/a/AnimalWelfareAct.htm

- People are able to buy animals on the spot without much thought, leaving animals to end up neglected, as the ownerr don't realise the effort they need to put in looking after them, or the animal is not how they expected to be like.

- No home checks are required. The animals can be sold to anyone. It wouldn't be right to let a child be adopted by a random stranger and animals are no different to humans.

- Animals are simply breed for money. There's no research behind genetic problems, which can be fatal for the animal or cause them to have a miserable life.

- Why not RECUSE these animals? Because you are just providing more funds for them to breed and collect more animals in these conditions. It stop it, we need to decrease the demand for them.

- Animals SHOULD come from responsible, trained breeders or rescue centres, who are willing to give home checks to make sure the new owners are fully prepared and loving for their new arrival(s).

- If we don't stop stores from being able to sell live animals, more and more animals will end up neglected, in bad accommodation (due to there being no home check), with genetic problems and not at all content! It's no fair for them to be treated this way as we all aim for equality and peace in this world. We believe this extends to animals, not just humans. We were all created for a purpose and we must love and respect each other, no matter who we are.

18. SPK UP! Bring Pets to Texas Woman's University

Recently, many colleges have been changing their rules to allow students to bring their pets into the dormitories, including many of our nation’s top colleges as well as many other women’s colleges.

Many studies support the idea that pets reduce stress and increase overall happiness, and different studies suggest that pets may aid students in doing better in school. With college being one of the most stressful times in our lives, we feel that the allowance of small pets in the dormitories should be established, as well as the designation of Pet Halls to allow for spayed/neutered, vaccinated cats and dogs in specific dorms.

The animals we want allowed in the dormitories are small mammals (hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs, etc.), certified non-venomous reptiles, and the increase of the aquarium limit to 20 gallons.

20. Make selling/giving away undesexed pets illegal

Across the country, there is wide disparity among shelters and their application of desexing. Problems stemming from inadequate training, insufficient funding, indifference to animal suffering, and failure to recognize the need to change and update procedures, are found everywhere, from small rural shelters to large city facilities.10,000 animals are euthanized everyday.

The local shelter is too often the last stop for a dog or cat. Shelters have been put into this unenviable position by the irresponsible breeding of far too many animals. Puppy mills, pet stores, backyard breeders, "responsible" hobby and show breeders, people who simply won't, don't bother, or "forget" to have their animals spayed or neutered, pet food companies who subsidize breeders with free samples and discount coupons, and the cat and dog breed "clubs" that encourage breeding -- all contribute to this massive problem.

It is a sad fact that, when a human being chooses to create a relationship with another living being, then fails to live up to the responsibilities that go with that relationship, we allow the human to walk away guilt-free -- it is always the animal who pays 100% of the price for the human's errors.

21. HELP CATTLE & CAMELS IN JAISALMER

We are writing with regard to the high incidence of Botulism in Jaisalmer, that is claiming the lives of cattle.

Locals from Jaisalmer contacted members of JFAPO asking for help, and an experienced team of vets and experts in livestock was immediately sent to investigate. A short report documenting their findings and photos is also available here http://www.fiapo.org/docs/mar12mjaisalmer.pdf

After seeing various cases, in the villages of Habur, Serawa and Sanu, the vets confirmed initial suspicions of what was killing these animals – Botulism. This disease has taken a toll of 10% of the livestock population in this zone, where each village boasted of a high cattle population. Numbers have declined over the last 2 years and people are now shifting to buffalo rearing, which has no benefit since buffalos, like cows, can also be infected by the same disease.

Jaisalmer & the surrounding villages are notorious for trace -element deficiencies, like Phosphorus, Calcium & Zinc. Botulism mainly affects milching cows, due to high demand of the animals’ post-partum phases. Animals, driven to seek these trace elements, often consume carcasses, which have spores of this deadly disease. Phosphorus deficiency, disorganised grazing, and improper disposal of carcasses is leading to an accelerating number of deaths.

To combat this growing problem, we have the following recommendations:

1. The area should be declared as a specific mineral deficit area and should be supplied with ad-libitum quantity.

2. Proper disposal of carcasses: A pit (7ft * 6ft) surrounded by a wall can be made in each village. This is a low cost, but effective solution.

3. Education and awareness through literature.

25. Scarecrow dogs - Expose Bulgaria's dirty little secret

It's been going on for centuries in the mountain range villages of Bulgaria. Clear evidence of the unsurpassed, undying evil genius of the Bulgarian Homo Rapiens.

Instead of placing scarecrows, poor, defenseless dogs are regularly tied up by the villagers with a short, rusty chain to a post in the wilderness, near someone's ranch, to scare away predators. The chain leaves for little or no movement on the muddy ground.

Soiled in their urine and feces, frustrated, left without food or water for days in the scorching 40 C heat, exposed to predators, unable to fight or run, uncared for, unwanted, untreated and forgotten, they die in agony and terror from thirst, starvation, disease, or their wounds if attacked and mutilated by the raving beasts.

This kind of abuse is common and widespread. Despite the numerous tragic reports of dogs who have suffered and died in such despicable conditions, nothing has been done by the regulatory authorities or the police to amend the situation or punish those responsible.

This kind of animal neglect should never happen. But when it does, it must be exposed and stopped.

28. Stop horse racing in Australia

Have you ever thought of what happens after the race?

In the horse racing industry it’s not about horses, it’s about people and money. Approximately 2,000 tonnes of horse meat is exported for human consumption each year and over 40,000 horses are slaughter in Australia alone.

Also this meat is not being exported to countries where there are starving people with few options. It is being sent to wealthy countries that consider horse meat to be a “delicacy”.

How do they kill them? An employee comes into what’s called the “kill room” and holds a pressurized gun called a "captive bolt pistol" up to the horse's forehead and shoots a 4-inch piece of metal about the size of a roll of quarters into its brain.

Why do they get sent to be slaughtered? Many race horses are sent to be slaughtered if there owners decide that they don’t want them anymore. Not only that but if they have some sort of a long term injury (aka Broken leg) that most of the time can be healed over a period of time.

Instead of this the owners could arrange for them to be put on some sort of a retirement paddock where they can be paddock horses for the rest of their lives.

29. Stop funding/conducting animal experiments

Argument 1#

"Animal testing is vital to medical advancement".
This is completely untrue. Vaccinations have been produced for one of the most well-known and tragic type of illness; cancer. A vaccination against one type of cancer was tested on a small group of volunteers. As far as I am aware, none of the volunteers were harmed in testing process.

There are now so many charities that do not fund or conduct animal experiments, such as The Age-Related Diseases and Health Trust, that do not test on animals so it would be possible for the Alzheimer's Society to stop funding/conducting animal experiments. These organizations carry out their research on alternatives such as fake organs and computer models. Not only do these methods save thousands of animals, but some scientists also say that they are more reliable. If all scientists used these methods, more people would be saved.

Argument 2#

"Animal testing has saved thousands of lives, including those of diabetics".
Although animal-tested medicines have saved people before, these were mostly invented in the days when there were not as many alternatives to the use of animals. Even these could have been tested on volunteers and donated body parts.
Research into treatments for Diabetes was in fact held up by animal testing. If animal testing had of been banned 200 years ago, Diabetics would have benefited enormously. A doctor found out that Diabetes was linked to high and low amounts of sugar in peoples' diets by looking at the urine of Diabetics, not by performing animal experiments.

Argument 3#

"Lab animals are well-cared for and the scientists try to minimise their suffering".
Although there are laws to protect animals used in experiments, these laws are so poorly-enforced that they might as well not exist. Many of them exist only to protect scientists from animal cruelty charges. Scientists that work in these labs can, in most cases, legally: cut animals open, gas them, shoot them, burn them, drop chemicals into their eyes, irritate their skins, give them electric shocks, deprieve them of food, water and/or sleep, take them away from their mothers when they are too young and force-feed them chemicals. Animals may be forced to live in barren cages until they are either killed or die due to the experiments in which they are tortured.
Believe it or not, some people illegally kidnap animals to sell them for vivisection.

So if you have ever lost an animal companion, there is a risk that he or she might have been captured and sold for vivisection. Although most of the animals tortured are bred specifically for use in experiments, some of them are illegally taken from the people who love and care for them.

30. Breeders kill Shelter Dogs’ Chances! Tell McClouds you wont shop at their store until they stop selling puppies!

Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs’ Chances! Of an estimated 8 million pets that end up in shelters every year in the U.S., approximately 4 million are put to death because a home could not be found for them. Meanwhile, only 24% of U.S. household pets are adopted from animal shelters or rescue agencies.

People supplying pet stores are 'Backyard Breeders' who do not care about the welfare of the animals they breed, they are only trying to make money. There is no such thing as a "responsible" breeder, because for every puppy or kitten who is produced by any breeder, an animal awaiting adoption at an animal shelter loses his or her chance at finding a home—and will be euthanized.

Selling animals denies homes to homeless and unwanted animals who await adoption in animal shelters.
