1. Bosnia & Herzegovina: we say NO to the euthanasia of 10 captive bears

For many years now a large number of wild animals have lived under illegal and completely inhumane and inadequate conditions where they are being kept as an attraction and marketing tool for restaurants and other catering establishments or in private zoos.

They all ended up in the hands of their current “owners” thanks to insensitive hunters who killed their mothers.

Two bears, who have spent their entire life in small cages, under terrible conditions, are going to be put down by decision of Bosnia & Herzegovina's Ministry of Agriculture, Water-Management and Forestry. Actually, the same fate expects all 10 captive bears, known in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

2. Tell NHMRC to stop funding animal Testing

Please tell the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) to stop funding millions of taxpayer's money into animal testing.

Over 10 million animals a year are used as models in medical research, most funded by taxpayer's money.
These animals are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act and are subjected to torturous experimentation which are often inconclusive and unscientific.

Putting aside the cruelty, animals and humans differ genetically, anatomically and metabolically therefore animals are inappropriate models for medical research. 9 out of 10 drugs that work successfully on animals failed on humans.

Please urge NHMRC to stop funding this cruel, expensive and inconclusive practice and invest in alternative methods such as computer modelling, Corrositex, improved statistical design, the Murine Local Lymph Node Assay (LLNA), etc.

Thank you.

3. Stop Thailand Elephant Abuse

I have witnessed cruelty towards elephants in Asia before. Now, I came across a photograph of a baby elephant being tied up to a tree and beaten by two men with sticks.

This is a method to break the animal's spirit and body and prepare it to be used for tourism purposes in Thailand.

4. Alley's Law

This petition has been made to further community awareness of Alley's story, so that future changes can be made before it is too late for other animals. What many people don't understand is that Alley would have survived, if someone had had the power to step in and take over temporary care of her.

It seems that the laws are unclear, and that it is not possible for anyone to intervene. There is too much red tape and passing the buck; Alley's health and wellbeing should have been a priority to the owner, but that wasn't the case, and, sadly, Alley was ultimately euthanased. Alley should have been seized, along with the owner's other 3 horses. We fighting to change the laws so that this would be possible.

We hope this petition can shape a new pathway for the RSPCA to improve its standards. (Former Premier) Rann changed laws that were dated by nearly 100 years, we are fighting to change the laws again.

5. Stop Rhino Poaching

Rhino poaching in South Africa is a very serious issue, as of the 3rd of November 2011 341 rhinos have been killed so far this year outstripping last year’s total of 333 and it’s not even the end of the year.

Rhino poachers in SA are even targeting dehorned rhinos for two reasons, firstly there is still a substantial piece of horn below the surface of the skin and secondly by killing the rhino it increases the price of rhino horn as it becomes a more valuable commodity. It is for this second reason that many poachers are also killing baby rhinos which have little or no horn at all. Fewer rhinos equals more money per kilogram of rhino horn.

Rhino horn is widely used in Chinese culture as it is believed it can cure a wide variety of ailments varying from boils to cancer and even devil possession. It has no medicinal value it is compressed hair or kerratin the same as you would find in your finger nails.

In middle east culture rhino horn is a status symbol if you have one as a sheath for your dagger. Needless to say many other materials could be used.

Your signature is massively appreciated.

HELP TO SAVE SOUTH AFRICA'S RHINOS!

6. Harsher laws for acts of animal cruelty

Acts of animal cruelty are becoming more and more frequent. Example on 14 November on the news there was a case of a puppy who was found by police bashed to death.

Other examples are upon entering a aquarium store in Sydney's western suburbs quite a few port jackson sharks and a couple of sting rays were kept in a small tank with hardly any room to move.

After speaking with RSPCA ad NSW fisheries Department as they are for sale there is no legal legislation to Aquarium shop owners to have these animals in a reasonable sized tank this is defiantly cruelty laws need to be harsher.

I do have photo evidence of the sharks and rays in the small tank.

7. Make Neutering and Micro-chipping of pets Compulsery

FIRSTLY i am just a 17 year old girl doing an animal management course at college i am NOT a member of PETA or any such organisation, simply a outspoken young lady trying to make a difference in the laws.

I find it disgusting that some people breed animals purely to make a profit of money and don't care about the animals welfare.

So I'm hoping doing this petition will bring forward a law making it COMPULSORY to neuter your pets whether it be Rabbits, dogs, cats, horses, pigs (excluding farms and registered breeders) and ONLY being able to breed if a Breeding licence is applied for from the government with appropriate reasons to breed; and also to make Micro-chipping compulsory to limit the amount of abandoned animals along with lost and stolen and to help owners when moving house etc.

Please sign, it will help save millions of animals lives and prevent selfishness from humans towards animals.

This link below is just a short and very simple presentation i put together to show you some hidden information about how people are treating animals and getting away with it, my petition is to help stop this kind of behaviour from happening.

8. Demand Dalton Mcguinty meet with Michael Schmidt & end his hunger strike!

"Michael Schmidt is now on the 24th day of his hunger strike for responsible food freedom. He is a farmer who has been relentlessly pursued by Health Canada for tending cows the old fashioned way. He refuses to put his animals on a conveyor belt and won’t allow them to be a cog in a wheel in some God forsaken factory. He won’t even cut their horns off, because it violates their nature to do so.

His farm is a heritage museum, a tribute to traditional, pre-modern foodways. It should be a national treasure. Instead, it is the scene of Canada’s national disgrace. Health bureaucrats, urged on by Canada’s conventional farmers are trying to destroy the farmer and take his farm away. They are bent on denying the people who depend on Michael’s farm. Their goal is to cut off their milk supply.

Michael’s food is produced privately, it does not go into the commercial food system. It is only available to his herd share investors, not the general public. His investors need this milk, often because they are struggling with serious health issues. They seek his milk as a remedy, and because of his meticulous animal husbandry and safety protocols, it is a good one.

Last year a judge vindicated Michael. This year an appeal by the state finds him to be a criminal.

One of the two documentaries made about this man is entitled, Michael Schmidt, Organic Hero or Bioterrorist. His government is treating him like the latter, but I can assure you he is the former. In fact, Michael Schmidt is considered a Hero of Sustainable Agriculture by Hartkeisonline.com.

Now, he is starving himself to wake society from its slumber. He is determined to die trying to get his government to be reasonable. He is asking for a meeting with the Ontario Premier, Dalton McGuinty.

In a blog post by Michael on the Bovine blog two days ago, there is a chilling sentence:

“I do not think that I can benefit of all this change coming towards us but I certainly can envision a better world for our children.” –Michael Schmidt

It sounds like Michael doesn’t expect to live through this episode!

Please, take a few minutes and make a call, send a fax, or email these Canadian officials. In the kindest way possible, ask for their help for this farmer, who, like Ghandi, is fighting for the rights of all people. We will get more with honey than with vinegar, so please make your request respectful of their office and with humility, for the love of Michael.

Michael’s willingness to sacrifice his life, speaks volumes for the love he carries in his heart for you and me, and our freedoms. Let’s not let him down in his darkest hour." - taken by an excerpt by Kimberly Hartke

9. Boycott American Airlines for Jack

Jack, a family cat was lost by American Airlines in August of 2011 and is still missing to this day...

The following is a short excerpt from the NY Daily News August 30, 2011. To read the entire article go to

http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-08-30/local/30111227_1_facebook-page-hurricane-irene-preparations-jack

*****

American Airlines launched an all-out hunt yesterday for a cat it lost at Kennedy Airport in the chaos of preparing for Hurricane Irene.

The airline issued a public apology to pet owner Karen Pascoe after animal lovers bombarded its Facebook page demanding it look for her cat.

"He's a member of my family," Pascoe told the Daily News. "I just want my cat. I want whatever it takes to get my cat."

*****

When American Airlines responded with very little enthusiasm, hiring a public relations expert to try to put a positive "spin" on the situation, a boycott was instituted. To this day, Jack Remains lost and his guardian remains heartbroken, as do all the thousands following Jack's story with great concern.

Recently there have been a small number of news articles to revisit Jack's loss at the hands of American Airlines. It is in this same spirit that we repost this and other pledges to boycott American Airlines, American Eagle, and all subsidiaries of AMR Corporation, American Airlines parent corporation located in Fort Worth Texas, USA.

We understand the problem of loss or death of companion animals at the hands of airlines is not limited to this one even and Jack. We understand that very few, if any airlines are innocent of harming animals in their care. But this is where we are making our stand! We stand for Jack against American Airlines.

Since American Airlines is a multinational corporation, doing business in countries all over the world, we ask everyone from ANY country in the world to please sign the petition pledge to boycott American Airlines. We thank you for your signature and Jack thanks you.

Volunteers in the New York city area are always welcome in the ground search for Jack.

10. Ban Rodeos in Victoria

No doubt many of you have seen the recent tv advertisements promoting the 7th Annual International Rodeo that will be held here in Melbourne. I was so shocked to see this abhorrent 'sport' still finds support within out community.

While I doubt we can prevent this particular event from going ahead, we can raise the profile of this issue and call for a ban on events like this in the future, as has been done in the ACT, Britain and parts of Europe and (surprise?) the USA.

Put simply, this 'sport' relies on the use of pain to satisfy it's audience. In this day and age, we know better. Were rodeos not to exist, hundreds of animals would live without being forced to go through this distressing, painful experience, while it's supporters would simply find some other hobby to consume their time.

To me, the argument is a simple one: the pleasure people may take in this 'sport' is not of greater value than the welfare of the animals that are subjected to its inherent cruelty.

I urge you to take action against these disgraceful events, and show that they are not welcome here in the future.

THE FACTS
Bull Riding:
- Straps are placed around the bulls' bodies and press on their genitals. This, as it would for any one of us, causes pain and makes the bulls buck.
- In addition, electric prods are used as a bull leaves the gate in order to make it buck more wildly.

Calf/Steer Roping (copied from animalsaustralia.org/issues/rodeos):

"Contestants on horseback must rope a calf (usually within 60 seconds), dismount and throw the calf, then any three of its hooves must be tied together and held for five seconds.

Injuries caused by the force of lassoing and jerking to a halt, then being thrown, include tearing or stretching of ligaments, disc rupture, internal haemorrhaging to the thymus gland and trachea and subcutaneous tissue damage.

Calves can suffer broken legs, even broken necks, and research has shown that even though they get to their feet and leave the arena apparently unharmed, calves can still be suffering from internal haemorrhaging which is not visible without an autopsy. These young animals with soft bones and still developing bodies, should never be subjected to such harsh treatment.

Steers are usually required to be roped within 90 seconds. Injuries include bruising, broken limbs and horns, as well as stress caused by brutal handling. Injuries in this event can cause an animal to be destroyed (out of sight of the crowd)."

11. Stop the cruel transport and treatment of cattle in India

A few of the practices employed by factory farms are:

The pre-emptive, constant feeding of antibiotics to prevent disease. Humans consuming dairy and meat products from factory farms may develop immunities to antibiotics and thus lose the ability to fight certain strains of bacteria.

Tightly controlled light cycles to simulate longer or shorter days. This confuses an animal's body and forces an unnatural growth response.

Altering animals' bodies to prevent them from acting out on the aggression and anxiety caused by living in such extreme confinement.
Forcing breeding animals to reproduce at unnaturally accelerated rates, causing them exhaustion, stress and early deaths.

Rough transportation of livestock to slaughterhouses, after which sick or injured animals who fell or died on the way (referred to as "downers") are forced onto slaughter trucks.

Confining so many animals in one place produces much more waste than the surrounding land can handle. As a result, factory farms are associated with various environmental hazards, such as water, land and air pollution • and people who live in close proximity to factory farms often complain of high incidents of illness.

12. BAN AUSTRALIAN SOW STALLS

We, the undersigned, would like to see all gestational / sow stalls banned by 2017 in Australia. Currently the industry has imposed a self regulated voluntary phase out of sow stalls by 2017, due to public pressure and animal welfare concerns. However this is not a legislative change therefore it will STILL BE LEGAL for their use to continue post 2017.

Tasmania is the only state in Australia that has committed to legally banning this barbaric practice after 2017.

Post 2017 in all other Australian states, pig farmers will still be able to legally use these stalls for the first 6 weeks of the sow’s pregnancy. Therefore we are asking all State MP's to ban the use of sow stalls and gestational crates for any time period after 2017.

The Female pigs selected for breeding purposes in factory farms spend their entire lives indoors, and the majority of this time severely confined. They have no room to move or turn around. The space is so small that they can only take one step back or forward. The gestational period for sows is 16 weeks and they are confined in these conditions for the entire time period. The sow stalls they are confined to measure 0.6 x 2.2 meters.

Two weeks before giving birth the sows are relocated to farrowing crates are even more restrictive. A sow is forced to give birth on a concrete floor; with no nesting materials. Once the piglets are born she cannot interact or nurture them, she is denied the maternal instincts that are rightfully hers. Even more horrifying is the fact that she has to watch her young be castrated, have their teeth extracted and watch their tails being docked. She hears them screaming in terror and pain and she cannot do anything about this because she is confined and trapped. When her piglets are 3-4 weeks old they are removed from her, she is impregnated again and the whole cruel cycle begins again.

The pork industry justifies these stalls by saying they do this for the animals own well being; they are protecting sows from other aggressive pigs. However credible research shows us that sows confined like this experience severe depression, boredom and frustration which can in turn lead to aggressive behaviour. If sows were provided more space and appropriate bedding the above housing systems would not be necessary. The real reason for the industry to allow these inhumane housing systems is to maximise space so more sows can be housed, therefore increasing profits.

Countries such as the UK, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands have banned the use of gestation / sow stalls. Several states in the USA have also outlawed them. The EU and New Zealand are in the process of banning them as well. Australia should follow their lead and do so as well.

13. Call for Harsher Animal Abuse Penalties in Newfoundland and Labrador

In cases of animal cruelty/neglect, the current provincial animal protection act in Newfoundland and Labrador imposes a fine no less than $50 and no more than $200 for first and second offences.

In third or subsequent offences, a fine can be issued to a maximum of $500. Compared to other provinces across the country this legislation is weak at best.

Stories of cases of animal abuse continue to circulate across the province attracting media attention and causing public outrage from animal lovers and rescue organizations witihin the province and across the maritimes.

It is time for government to take notice and revise the provinical animal protection act so it is at least on par with similar legislations across the country. For instance, in Alberta, fines can reach up to $20,000. In Ontario, up to $60,000 and in BC a fine can be issued for $5000 for a first offense and $10,000 for a second offence.

With the influx of cases of animal cruelty occurring within our province and specifically in Northern Labrador, attention must be paid! Harsher penalties for this type of offense will set an example to potential offenders and reduce the instances of repeat offenders. A $50 fine for torturing an animal is the same as no law at all!!

Please sign your name in support of this cause.

This is for Mia, a little pup from Northern Labrador who was forced to inhale gas and was inevitably damaged so badly she had to be euthanized.

It is for the puppies who were tossed out in a garbage bag and left for dead. Or the tiny pup found locked in a deep freeze barely alive.

It is for the animals of Dunville Placentia Bay who were abandoned in their home and left to starve to death and it is for every animal that has experienced, neglect, torture, cruelty, and distress at the hands of someone who should no better.

This petition will be submitted to government along with letters and documents supporting the need for change.

Please make sure your name is counted!

14. Abolish breed-specific legislation and prevent innocent dogs from being destroyed

PLEASE NOTE: THIS PETITION IS NOT CONDONING DOG ATTACKS, NOR IS IT REQUESTING THAT CERTAIN BREEDS BE REMOVED FROM THE "RESTRICTED" REGISTER. THIS PETITION IS CALLING FOR A MORE SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THE IDENTIFICATION OF PIT BULL TERRIERS AND ALSO FOR AN EDUCATION AND TRAINING BASED APPROACH TO PREVENTING DOG ATTACKS.

The Victorian Government has introduced new legislation regarding the status of American Pit Bull Terriers in our society. From 30th September 2011, council rangers have the power to seize and destroy any dog they deem to be an unregistered American Pit Bull Terrier.

Not only does this law continue the discrimination against the breed, but it will undoubtedly lead to cases of mistaken identity, with many breeds and crosses (such as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier) sharing a resemblance with the Pit Bull. Council rangers have been given a guide as to how to recognise characteristics of Pit Bull Terriers, and identification will be based on sight as opposed to the more scientifically correct method of DNA testing.

Only if you can produce a breeders or veterinary certificate confirming your dog is not a Pit Bull will you be saved from having your dog seized. This presents a massive problem for owners of cross breed dogs, and particularly Staffordshire Bull Terrier owners, and, as such, this law must be changed immediately before families risk losing their beloved pets all because of a knee-jerk reaction to a situation.

The government needs to adopt a "deed not the breed" approach to dog attacks and focus their efforts on training programs for both owners and dogs. Many dog breeds require firm handling and proper training, and, if this is done in an effective manner, the liklihood that such a dog would attack for no reason is extremely low. Rarely does a well trained, well adjusted and well socialised dog attack for no apparent reason and people, just as much as dogs, need to be trained to ensure situations that could lead to a dog attacking do not occur.

We call for temperament testing, rather than BSL, and ask that each dog be treated as an individual rather than being subjected to breed stereotypes. DNA testing as opposed to appearances is also necessary to ensure we do not commit innocent dogs to their deaths. Currently, DNA testing cannot override council ranger decisions; i.e. if a ranger believes it looks like a pitbull, DNA testing stating it is not a pit bull is irrelevant. Only if you appeal the decision and take the matter to VCAT can you produce DNA testing as evidence. This matter is getting out of hand and is completely irrational, and the law needs to be changed now.

Since the new legislation's inception, there has been a marked increase in people dumping or abandoning their dogs on the streets, particularly dogs of the pit bull breed. Surely this is yet more evidence that it is irresponsible ownership is the issue when it comes to dog attacks as opposed to breed temperaments! Don't blame an innocent animal for being born of a certain breed. Don't blame an innocent animal for having irresponsible owners who don't train it or train it to be aggressive. Don't blame an innocent animal for being a victim of circumstance.

So, sign the petition and ask the Victorian Government to reconsider it's legislation, prevent innocent people from having their innocent dogs seized and stop this outrageous breed discrimination. We call for a scientific and reasoned approach to the apparent issue of Pit Bulls in our society.

15. Stop Maun Council Shooting Healthy Dogs

Maun Council has announced plans to shoot around 100 feral dogs which live at Maun Dump because a small number of them have allegedly attacked some local goats:

http://www.mmegi.bw/index.php?sid=1&aid=95&dir=2011%2FAugust%2FMonday29&fb_comment_id=fbc_10150286911752758_19188659_10150287667602758#f284e561539ea7

Maun Animal Welfare Society (MAWS) has recently visited the dump to dart these feral dogs. The dogs are in a good condition and a number of them have now been sterilised and vaccinated. We also removed 7 puppies for rehoming.

We believe that the dogs should NOT be shot because:

A) not all of the dogs have been involved in the alleged goat attacks
B) we do not agree with killing healthy animals
C) killing these sterilised and vaccinated dogs simply opens up the dump for more feral dogs to move in - dogs that have NOT been sterilised or vaccinated
D) having spent a day darting dogs at the dump we do not believe the Council is capable of shooting and killing these dogs in a humane manner.

Whilst we agree that something needs to be done about Maun's stray dog population, we believe that the Council should focus their efforts on trying to find a humane solution in conjunction with MAWS.

A similar campaign was undertaken by the Council in Kasane recently. Local people in Kasane report that the council gunmen were incapable of humanely shooting the dogs and that during the campaign numerous dogs died an agonising death due to blood loss from limbs which had been shot off and other horrific injuries.

Is this what we want Maun's many international tourists to remember about Botswana? Mutilated dogs dying in agony because the Council did not seek a humane solution?

MAWS has been operating since 2003 and has treated more than 7,000 dogs... all we ask is for is the opportunity to discuss this decision with the Council before it is implemented.

19. Stop inhumane seagull deterants

Seagulls (Silver Gulls) are Australian native sea birds protected under Victorian State Wildlife legislation. Seagulls are an important part of our ecosystem and they act as cleaners, removing food scraps from their environment. Seagulls are not classified as pests or in plague proportions by the State Authority - DSE.

Seagulls have learnt that humans leave a lot of food waste around and have taken advantage of this. Seagulls are actually doing us a favour by helping to keep our streets and beaches cleaned of food waste.

Seagulls are also an important part of our coastal culture. Seagulls are part of the coastal environment, even being immortalised in bronze sculptures by David Murphy as part of Frankston City Councils Coastal Arts Discovery Trail found along Frankston foreshore.

Seagulls are seen as a problem because their droppings reportedly corrode steel roofs. These roofs are situated in coastal salty environments though. Their nests reportedly block down pipes and gutters causing flooding. Poorly maintained gutters also cause this and seagulls may be blamed for poor maintenance practices.

Trials of poisoning the birds were not received well by residents who noted dead seagulls dropping out of the sky. Poisoning has since been abandoned as a control method.

Plastic owls and snakes have been and are still being used to scare the birds away, but the birds learn quickly and nest around or even on such things.

Illegal and cruel culling and poisoning of birds (with rat bait) had also been witnessed. Maintenance workers “clean” the roofs and kill chicks and break eggs. A phone call to DSE found that permits had not been issued for a building that culling was witnessed on.

The current control method of netting or stringing heavy gauge fishing line and wire on a large percentage of CBD buildings does not appear to be working to keep seagulls off the roofs and is also causing terrible suffering to seagulls that get caught in the netting and line and can hang for days by broken wings or trapped legs. The lucky birds that are spotted by residents and workers and called into wildlife rescue organisations are rescued by volunteers and most end up euthanized at local vets. A large number of the buildings are two story with limited or difficult access and in many cases the Frankston CFA are called out to help get the suffering gulls down. Permission is required to access roofs but in many cases that is not possible or practical and volunteers find their own way up to rescue to birds.

The netting, wire and line is often poorly designed and maintained and there are no standards in place to ensure humane practices are adopted by building owners.

21. Review Animal Welfare outcomes for animals affected by any Live Export Suspension or Ban

We are concerned about the Animal Welfare outcomes for Australian animals affected by any Live Export Suspension or Ban.

Indonesia has been a valued collaborator in Foot and Mouth Disease Bio-security Measures, we feel their surveillance is essential to the ongoing Bio-security of the region. The supply of cattle from Australia for Indonesia’s Self-Sufficiency Program has assisted both countries to work towards their common goal of keeping the region FMD free.

The valuable buffer that is provided by Indonesia in protecting Australia’s own livestock cannot be underestimated and needs to be publicly acknowledged.

Emergency drills for such an event found there would be not enough skilled staff to humanely destroy livestock and dispose of carcasses.

In droughts in the last century 20 Million and 30 million sheep perished. Retaining over a million grazing animals which cannot be processed puts many at risk of starving in the next drought.

Long distance road transport is not a good option for Animals and Australia is a vast country. It is not acceptable that animals would have to stand up the whole way across Australia into unfamiliar climates.

22. Stop Unnecessary Quarantine For Pets Entering Australia

At present, there is compulsory quarantine for all pets entering Australia, from 1 month to 6 months depending on where the animal is coming from. There are also some countries from which animals must complete 6 months quarantine in another country before being allowed to do some quarantine in Australia.

Apart from the fact that quarantine is exorbitantly expensive it is also considered inhumane in many countries, particularly when pets are coming from countries that do not have rabies or vaccination rules that are equally stringent to Australia.

Europe introduced the PETS program which allows pets from most countries in Europe and a large number or non European countries (including Australia) to move freely around Continental Europe and the UK without any quarantine.

Animals face an extremely long and stressful flight from other countries to Australia and are then expected to stay in a concrete floored barred cell for at least one month rather than experiencing the comfort of being with their families. It is true that families are allowed to visit their pets, but quarantine places are usually in distant locations with their permitted visiting hours usually only during working hours, when presumably pet owners will be at work.

Over 250,000 healthy cats and dogs are being put down per year, due to the issue of over breeding resulting in them having no owners, no home and therefore.. no life.

24. Ban the Sale of Kittens from The Three Oaks Animal Kabin

The Three Oaks Animal Kabin (http://www.thecourtyardcraftcentre.co.uk/three-oaks.htm) is a pet shop based at The Courtyard Craft Centre, Lytchett Minster, Poole, Dorset.

Despite the cheerful appearance of the web site, the pet shop is a dreary portakabin located at this country craft centre.

I was dismayed to find when I walked in a medium sized 2-storey cage with a very young female cat (definitely under 12 months) and her litter of kittens - for sale in the pet shop.

The mum cat was crying at the door to the cage and was very stressed looking. The kittens were huddled together silently.

Further down there was another young cat 'for sale' in a very small cage. She seemed to have some sort of injured paw as she was holding it in the air. Again, she was crying at the door and was very unhappy.

I asked the shopkeeper (a young woman) whether it was some sort of rescue centre (I had no idea it was legal to sell cats and kittens in a pet shop as I've never seen one selling them in the UK) and she said no it was a pet shop, and that the mother female cat was their cat and goes out to get pregnant, while the other cat is for sale but "gets let out of the cage at 5pm".

Apart from the unsatisfactory coniditons of these cats, I feel it is completely irresponsible for a local council to grant a license for this sort of thing. The RSPCA, Cats Protection League, Wood Green Animal Shelter and many more animal charities are full to capacity with cats and kittens at the moment, and the rates of stray and abandoned pets is at an all time high. To grant a license that allows this pet shop to keep generating and selling kittens is irresponsible and it needs revoking immediately.

The pet shop has many, many more areas of trade and not being able to sell kittens and cats would only be a very tiny inconvenience to their overall business.

25. Improve conditions of racehorses in the horse racing industry

Behind the glamour, flashing lights, cheers, and money, the horses in the racing industry are being abused through harsh track conditions, performance-enchancing drugs, being raced to soon in their lives, and being sent to slaughter when their use is no longer needed.

When signing this, you will support and be a part of the letters I will send a letter including this petition to local horse racing officials in the midatlantic region to bring awareness and help improve the conditions these horses have to endure.

There is more power in larger numbers. Thank you!

26. Have a Justin Bieber benefit concert for PETA

Many organisations/ brands etc. are cruel to animals ex. some use the animals for cosmetic testing and some support that. PETA is an organization that is against cruel treatment of animals, as suggested by its name (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

PETA protests the rodeo, fur in fashion shows, etc. They also raid animal testing labs and go undercover in slaughterhouses. Their trademark catchphrase is "Animals are not ours to eat / wear / experiment on / be entertained by / abuse in any way."

30. Save Lives: Increase Los Angeles City Limits on Pet Ownership from 3 Dogs and 3 Cats to 5 Dogs and 5 Cats

We request that the Los Angeles City Council increase the current pet limits per household from 3 cats and 3 dogs to 5 cats and 5 dogs. We believe this will help decrease the number of animals that are euthanized in Los Angeles, which in 2009 included 19,547 cats and dogs.

Raising pet limits will help us save more lives by connecting homeless shelter animals to households who want them. Increasing pet limits will also generate badly needed revenue for Los Angeles Animal Services through registration fees.

Councilmember Bill Rosendahl introduced a motion to the City Council June 5 to increase pet limits, and Councilmember Paul Koretz seconded the motion. Los Angeles Animal Services General Manager Brenda Barnette also strongly supports increasing pet limits from 3 dogs and cats to 5 dogs and cats. As of early December 2010, the motion remains in committee.

Many areas around the country do not have such strict restrictions on household pet ownership. For example, our neighbors in the city of Santa Monica have no limits on either cats or dogs. Riverside County allows nine cats before a kennel permit is required. San Diego County and Santa Barbara County have no cat limits.

For the last 10 years, the City of San Diego has not had a cat limit. The limit on dogs is 6. The Live Save rate for San Diego County Animal Services that covers both the City and the County is 82% for dogs and 54% for cats (Fiscal Year 2008-09 with intake of 48,878). During this same Fiscal Year 2008-09, the Live Save rate for Los Angeles is 73% for dogs and just under 39% for cats.

Councilmen Rosendahl wrote that “The current downturn in the economy has resulted in a higher rate of animal abandonment and has contributed to a 20% increase in the rate of impounds. To exacerbate the problem, over the past several years budget reductions in the Department of Animal Services have reduced the level of service provided to animals in the City’s shelters.”

PLEASE help get the word out! Do it for the animals who are counting on us. We must show the Council members that saying “Yes” to the increased pet limits is the right thing to do and is what the community wants.
