Target: Australian Government
Region: GLOBAL
Background (Preamble):
October 4, 2000
The mine is against the wishes of the traditional owners, the Mirrar Gundjehmi.
Jabiluka mine makes Kakadu a dumping ground for 20 million tonnes of radioactive waste. Uranium from Jabiluka feeds the nuclear fuel cycle worldwide: an industry increasingly recognised as unsafe and uneconomical.
The European Parliament and the Australian Senate have formally condemned the proposal. Kakadu IS a World Heritage Area.
