Petition Background (Preamble):
Petition the Government to cancel the Welfare to Work Initiative for Single Parents. In 2006 the Howard Government introduced the Welfare to work initiative.
This resulted in people losing their single parent payment when there youngest child turned eight if they went onto Welfare after July 2006.
The Labour Government at that time was against this initiative as it caused extreme hardship. Now the Labour Government under Julia Gillard is extending the initiative to include all recipients of the single parent payment.
All recipients of the single parent payment will now lose their payments and be transfered to Newstart when their youngest child turns eight
This is going to cause extreme hardship to people who are already at a disadvantage. In todays current economic climate it is going to be extremely difficult for many people to find employment and will result in nothing more than people being forced into further poverty.
We are urging the Federal Government not to pass this legislation and to repeal the previous Governments Legislation.
