The petition was one of the main elements of our campaign to halt the sale of art works from Southampton Art Gallery by the council. Thanks to all those who signed the petition a great collection is still available for public consumption.
Save our Collection Petition (for submission to Southampton City Council, 16 September 2009)
We, the undersigned, deplore the proposal to sell works from the City Art Gallery collection which has been recognised as having “pre-eminent national significance”.
These works do not belong to City Councillors; they belong to the people of Southampton and are part of our city’s heritage.
Any sale of art-works will put the gallery’s national recognition at risk, and will deter benefactors and art foundations from donating work in future.
We call upon City Councillors to review their decision to sell art-works, to recognise their duty of care for these works and to hold them in trust for the people of Southampton so that they can be passed on and appreciated by future citizens and visitors to our city.
