Re-nationalise Thames Water

Petition published by Gary Kandinsky on Feb 11, 2012

Target: The Prime Minister, The Opposition Party Leaders, the TUC

Petition Background (Preamble):

Thames Water was privatised in 1989. It is currently owned by Kemble, a consortium led by an investment fund run by the Australian Macquarie Bank. Australian investment funds already have interests in South East Water and Mid Kent Water. The Chinese Investment Corporation also has a 9% stake in Kemble.

TW are proposing a £4.1bn Super Sewer Tunnel across London. Campaigns across London have sprung up to defend their communities.

TW want this tunnel so that they can get the regulator to lift the price cap and so TW can then hike bills by £80 per home p,a and perhaps much more.

Only by re-nationalising TW can the public be confident that major disruption and costs are minimised whilst addressing water issues.

Petition:

We demand that Thames Water be brought back into Public Ownership, so that big business interests cannot hold communities and customers to ransom, profiting from schemes such as the Thames Super Sewer, which have little public support.
