We, the undersigned, have signed this petition, as we disagree with the fact that NON disabled people are able to purchase RADAR Keys from RADAR and local council’s, that allow access to disabled facilities, such as disabled toilets. These keys are also being sold on eBay.
As it stands, RADAR and most local council's, will sell these keys to anyone willing to pay for them. The only time you need to prove disability, is if you are entitled to, and wish to be VAT exempt.
Some local council’s require proof of disability, before issuing a RADAR key, but most councils do not request this proof. We feel, this is an infringement on our Human Rights, as Disabled people do not have the same choice as the NON disabled do, when using a public toilet.
RADAR and many council's state in their literature, that these keys are provided, to prevent vandalism and MISUSE. Allowing NON disabled people to purchase/posses these keys, is a form of misuse.
NON disabled people have a choice as to which toilet to use, standard public toilets, or disabled toilets. Disabled people only have ONE choice, DISABLED toilets.
Imagine if you will. You are a disabled person and your waiting to use the toilet, suffering from bladder weakness, or maybe you have a colostomy bag. To see a NON disabled person come out of the disabled toilet, is very frustrating and can cause incidents of self wetting, and unnecessary distress. Especially when knowing, that that person could have used an alternative toilet, normally only a few feet further away. Disabled people’s lives are difficult enough without having the added stress mentioned above.
To conclude, we the undersigned want the following changed:
1) We want RADAR Keys to only be available to disabled people. as is the case for Disabled Freedom Bus Passes and Blue Badges. The procedure to gain either of the afore-mentioned, is both in depth and thorough. Why can we not have a similar procedure for RADAR keys.
2) We want RADAR and ALL councils to request proof of disability, when a RADAR key is being purchased.
3) We also want it made clear to ALL auction sites, including eBay, that it is not permitted to sell RADAR Keys on their sites.
