Provide more Primary School Places in St Albans City Centre

Target: Hertforshire County Council
Background (Preamble):
Primary schools in St Albans are notoriously oversubscribed. This year, out of 90 available places in Maple, St. Peters and Aboyne Lodge, only 21 places were allocated to children without a sibling already at the school. Out of these, 4 children were allocated based on special needs or circumstances, making just 17 places for children applying under rule 5 (their nearest school).

After rules 1-4 (which include special circumstances and the sibling rule) only children living within 575m of Maple were offered a place there. For St Peters this distance was 306m. At Aboyne Lodge there were no places available after the sibling rule.

This has left many families living in the centre of St Albans with school places over a mile away, beyond several nearer schools. We believe that our children should be able to go to school within a mile of their homes and that the council must acknowledge the need for school places in the city centre rather than the outskirts.
Petition:
We, the undersigned, believe there are insufficient primary school places for children living in central St Albans, and as such Hertfordshire County Council should urgently make available extra school classes for 2009/10 at Maple, St Peters and Aboyne Lodge which are the schools located in the areas most affected.

In addition, in order to provide a long-term solution to this problem, we believe that priority must be given to building a new primary school, in a suitable position in relation to the areas affected, to ensure that such a shortfall never happens again.
