Preserve and Restore the Wards Department Store Building at Seven Sisters

Published by Joseph Nicholas on Oct 03, 2007

The Wards Department Store building on the corner of Seven Sisters Road and the High Road in the London Borough of Haringey is an architecturally interesting example of an early twentieth century steel-framed structure with large internal spaces. It is the only example of a steel-framed building in Tottenham and thus a significant part of Tottenham's architectural heritage. However, the current proposals for the redevelopment of the "Wards Corner" site above Seven Sisters Underground station envisage its demolition and replacement by a bland eight-storey block of flats.

We accordingly petition the Council of the London Borough of Haringey to require of the developers that:

(a) their proposals be altered to ensure the preservation of the Wards Department Store building, and

(b) the developers be required to restore the building and ensure its return to public use, for the benefit of current and future generations of Tottenham residents.
