Background (Preamble):
Leeds City Council is proposing the derelict waste transfer station between Evanston Avenue and Redcote Lane is a suitable site for a new waste transfer site to receive and dispatch 100,000 tonnes of residual waste per annum.
The landscape of the area has changed since the original environmental permits were issued, from one of Industrial /Manufacturing (including a coal powered power station) to one of leisure and retail, with nature reserve, Kirkstall Valley Park, life (fish, otters etc.) returning to the river just metres from the site. The canal has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Residents may remember that previous waste transfer site that afflicted the surrounding area with foul smells, plagues of flies and additional heavy traffic on Kirkstall Road. The Site is still operating as a primitive Household Waste Sort Site (HWSS). The council's own surveys have already concluded that the road does not have the capacity to take on this planned development.
The site is in a built-up residential area, next to a leisure complex with many restaurants and opposite Kirkstall Valley Primary School. Many local residents have already voiced their objections and signed a paper petition against the building of the station but the council is still planning to go ahead, ignoring their concerns and wishes and ignoring all the above reasons why this area is not a suitable place for the Waste Transfer Site.
The school have already taken a stand against the building of the station just opposite their playground, which was covered in the local press:
Yorkshire Evening Post, Letters to the Editor
Yorkshire Evening Post - Leeds Kids Waste Plant Fears
A campaign site has also been created which covers many of the facts about the issue:
Waste Not Wanted
